Here’s Why Michael Pachter is Wrong About a Console-Free Next Gen

Gamnesia Writes: "The ever-controversial Michael Pachter has once again stepped forward with some very bold predictions. For those who aren't aware, Pachter serves as an analyst for Wedbush Securities, which basically means he's paid to keep close tabs on the video game industry and make predictions about which companies, products, and services will succeed so investors know where to spend their money.

In Pach's most recent presentation, he stated that he believes that there won't be another generation of physical video game consoles, as Microsoft and Sony will each convert their brand over to cloud-based game streaming services going forward, and Nintendo simply won't be able to keep making hardware. Here's my take on the situation."

I've thought about this for a while. He may actually be right. The way tablets' power are increasing, you may as well spend $400 and get a console with all the added functionality of a tablet.

It just needs to be able to connect via HDMI and have multiple controller support . As long a all the major devs support it, why would anyone care whether they played their favourite games on a Playstation, Xbox, or Nintendo system. It is only about the games right??? It is to me at least... I have no loyalty to any corporation, they're all literally soulless and greedy, I just give my money to the one that gives me what I want for the best price. Fanboyism is ridiculous.

All the companies could sell their exclusives still anyway..and their own tablets. I for one would love if my PS4 was an Xperia tablet. I could take it anywhere. I would be amazing, and it would have android. Just connect it to the TV and it would be exactly the same but have its own screen for on the go. Graphics have hit the point of massively diminishing returns and game budgets are at a breaking point.

It's all up to the tablet specs and the publishers and developers to release their AAAs on them. If Destiny, Dragon Age, Witcher 3, NHL, FIFA, Halo,, Project Cars, ect. released on tablets and looked as good as consoles with all the same functionality I'd be a tablet gamer.

It would be the perfect balance between PC and console. All the ease, put in an play (or dl as it would be), and better tablets would have better graphics with upgrades at any time depending on your budget but older models still running the games just fine.

I like exclusives, I like xbox lives dedicated servers, I like achievements, I like the controller... If a tablet can get on par with all those things then I'd be on board myself

@DeathOfTheFanBoy

There are plenty of controllers for mobile, I really don't understand this misconception that controllers are a console exclusive. There are controllers for cell phones, tablets, PCs, etc...

(Warning the following is not an attack on anyone, just cramming it through your heads)

Now getting back on topic. Tablet gaming isn't ready to take over. The technology is evolving and fast, but it's just now to the point where it surpassed the 7th generation (PS360), and later next year it should have caught the Wii U.

The biggest drawback to a gaming tablet are heat and battery life. A tablet is even smaller than a console which means packing it with equivalent hardware to the XBO and PS4 is going to cause an inferno in your hands. But that's if the battery can even hold 1 hour of charge gaming at those levels. Then with games being 30GB / 40GB / and 50GB most tablets would only be able to store 1 or 2 games on the hardware, and 5 - 8 games on a 256GB microSD. Nor will it be ready in the next 5 - 6 years, and by then there should be a PS5 / XB? / Nintendo ?.

Tablet gaming is definitely the future of mobile gaming, and it would benefit Nintendo and Sony to move into this direction.

mikeslemonade1260d ago (Edited 1260d ago )

Screw tablet gaming. I will tell you that if everything is pushed to the cloud and everyone just becomes a software company there will be more Wii and DS type games. You want MS and Sony to be like Nintendo??

Keep consoles alive. And I hope smartphone and tablet gaming tank!

I would like to see how they can charge their usual $60 for tablet games. Yea.. That's not going to happen.

Also you may say controllers aren't exclusive but the developers will develop for the lowest common denominator and that is a weak tablet with no controller. So screw this movement to mobile touch gaming. The tablet shouldn't have ever been a transcending electronic item anyway. The functionality and practicality is still up for debate for me.

I have a I5 4gb ram Windows 8 tablet and all use it for is watching videos while laying down. It's useless pretty much.

A PS4 Xperia is in a way a console just a completely new direction. The idea of a consoless next generation is remove the hardware end of gaming. So really it is about streaming content. So any device (from TV to the PCs and tablets will play the content).

This causes major problems which is why I don't see this taking off except serving a market of people who don't buy consoles often. Aside for a technical inferiority the problem with these services is there is no need to stick to an ecosystem. Any developer, publisher can make their own ecosystem for their games. Which means multiple subscriptions from multiple providers. The only way the amount of ecosystems will be kept down is by having the consoles in the first place. So games are provided for the platform first then appear on these services later (which is what PS Now is really). The only thing keeping the idea of a consoless future viable is, strangely, the idea of keeping consoles relevant (because it forces publishers to an ecosystem)

LordMaim1260d ago

When they make a 62" tablet with surround sound, maybe.

Big_Game_Hunters1260d ago (Edited 1260d ago )

Did you miss the part where he said a tablet with an HDMI port? or do you just keep goodiebags full of sensationalist replies at the ready to respond after only reading the first sentence?

oof461260d ago

@Lord Maim: don't worry. I got the joke.

Blaze9291260d ago

not gonna lie, this gen right now honestly has me rethinking about buying another console in the future. Especially when I have this powerful PC i don't even use for gaming.

BX811260d ago

No way. I love my xb1/ps4 you can tell they were rushed by the lack of features some that were available last gen. What they just need to stop rushing and release a finished product.

* Pachter says this because HE & the people he helps will profit more from that kind of future.

He is trying to push that idea, him and other people, to influence people with money to invest that way.

He knows money, but knows almost nothing about actual video games.

He equates his money knowledge to mean that he somehow knows about everything, & it's just not true.

Games aren't the Business world in the same way that the stuff he deals with is.

There is a bit of creativity & art to it kind of like the music industry.

He's just wrong though.

no we need consoles period i guess go to cloud based gaming on them make itl ike steam box have sales on digital titles then sony and msoft will be competing with valve and so eva called pc master race bs can stop

CerealKiller1260d ago

Although with streaming services there may be no need for new consoles, as long as there is a market of people willing to buy a new console, companies will keep releasing them. We see every time companies release new products people are lining up and pre-ordering them even before they know how the new version differs from the previous product.

incendy351260d ago (Edited 1260d ago )

He is probably right. Although I am not so sure his idea of cloud gaming is quite ready. But I could easily see Microsoft especially making a console UI for Windows similar to the touch UI they brought to Windows 8. This would allow you to buy a game once and play it anywhere. Similar to what they are doing with games and apps in the Windows Store that you buy once and can play on Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

One of the main goals of DX12 is to make code sharing between mobile, pc and console mostly automatic. Portable code is the future. And they are also opening up the Xbox Live API's so they can be used across all platforms.

In the end it is what is best for consumers and for developers, which are the two customers they need to please.

DougLord1260d ago

I know a lot of people on here are VERY against this because they fear loosing ownership of IP and other stuff BUT, this is not 5 years off, it is almost here. Look at Nvidia Shield or PS+. Sony's newest cell phone plays PS4 games. I've got GIGA bit Internet from a shirt 3rd tier company (Hotwire). You will start seeing this towards the end of next year with Azure.
