21 hours later; MGS 4 review - PS3 Attitude

From PS3 Attitude: "Amazing to think that the Metal Gear saga has been 21 years in the making. Even more amazing that it took us almost exactly 21 hours to complete the first playthrough of Metal Gear Solid 4 - Solid Snake's swansong.

One hour per year - I wonder if that was in the game design like so many other clever and nostalgic references to MG and MGS titles gone by that appear in the game...

There will be no spoilers here - all I will tell you is how it felt to play, and complete, the most important PS3 exclusive of the year.

I'll be up front about it - I've had a problem with the Metal Gear Solid series over the years..." (Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, PS3) -

I think that no matter the time it takes...
Regardless of who plays it, the game is ultimately an epic experience for all. It is the best in the series for me and for anybody to miss this game, they are missing out on a great time.

Yeah I was at like 16:44 or something on my first play through normal for previous MGS players. Great game but I still feel like there should have been more gameplay. From Act 3 on I felt like all I was doing was watching not playing. A gaming classic for sure but some additional gameplay and proper editing away from being a masterpiece.

Agree
The first half is sublime... The second half is full of over indulgent cut scenes. Any serious MGS fan will lap it up, but from the end of Act 2 more casual players are likely to be lost and saying "WTF is going on? When do I play?".

I loved it but it would have been an even better game (and less an interactive film) if they maintained the balance of the first two acts all the way through.

The problem is when you say anything about this the fan boys just jump on you like sharks. It's as if this game has to be know as perfect. While it is far from perfect its still a quality game, even if you watch half of it.

What would have been cool is instead of just telling all the backstory in cutscenes they let you play through it in MGS4 level graphics. I'd love to see a remake of MG and MG 2 for the MSX2 using this engine.

I agree mate. And the funny thing is, is that if such constructive criticism were given a warmer welcome we may well end up with future MGS titles (a prequel perhaps?) that far exceed MGS4.

To me the gameplay was the weakest part of the experience. Simply because beyond Act 2 it becomes an ever increasing afterthought to the cut scenes. As enjoyable as it is, it feels like lazy storytelling when you have the opportunity to make such experiences interactive given the form. I have no doubt that if Kojima could make such cut scenes have real player interaction the game would not just have got more tens, but may well have knocked Ocarina of Time (and GTAIV) well off its Metacritic throne!

Nice to have some sensible discussion. Bubbles! :)

It's nice to have a open discussion on this site. The more I think about it as much as I hated playing Raiden in MGS2 it would have been fun to use him in MGS4 to add to the gameplay. Instead of watching him fight in a ton of cutscenes they could have done a shorter (but still awesome) cutscene and then put the player in control.

I know a lot of people hated playing anyone but Snake in MGS2 but in this case you'd play as Snake most of the time but also take control of the supporting cast from time to time. Which helps make things fresh and make it more of a game then an interactive movie. I think this would have really put the game over the top. It works well for games like Resident Evil so I don't understand why they didn't even try.

Man, I love this game.

Currently playing on Big Boss Hard and trying not to kill a soul after finishing Solid Normal a few days ago. I got 28 hours: 04 mins probably because I sneaked everywhere like a ninja and practically nobody saw me lol
