Portal is the Definitive Franchise of the Last Generation

Examining what made Valve’s science fiction puzzle-platformers absolute must-plays for any and all gamers. (PC, Portal, PS3, Xbox 360)

I would put either one in my top 10. Not bad games but I didn't love them.

What game(s) do you love?
FriedGoat  +   28d ago
Portal 1 and 2 were fun, that is all.
Portal over mass effect trilogy? Uncharted? Gears of war? Lol nope.

My original post should have read "wouldn't put either one..."

My fav of the gen were probably Red Dead Redemption, Halo Reach, MGS 4, Gears 1, Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, God of War 3 and The Last of Us in no particular order, maybe Skyrim...off the top of my head. I loved COD 4 and Killzone 2 for a time too. I put a lot of online hours into the Street Fighter and the NHL series as well. All the games aforementioned I probably enjoyed more than either Portal.

But I recognize that personal favs are personal for a reason...

Portal is unique and funny.

Mass Effect, Uncharted and Gears are rip-offs of previous games.

Mass Effect is a 3rd person Halo, Uncharted is Tomb Raider, and Gears is just 3rd person Doom. Kinda.

Portal 1 is a masterpiece, if far too short, but it was a test for god sake.

Portal 2 just made it longer and funnier.

I really didn't like Portal 2 for some reason, I mean yeah it was fun the first time, but it never made me YEARN for a second play through.

Portal 1 however, is a Masterpiece.

I wouldn't put them in my top ten, but they are excellent nonetheless.

Definitive franchise of the generation?

Gears of War?
Uncharted?
Assassin's Creed?

Seems like any of those would be more deserving of that title.

Hell, what about Call of Duty, for that matter?

Portal and Portal 2 are both great, but c'mon...

Yea, played Portal 1 and 2 once and never picked it up again, I still play gears 3 online, as do a few other of my friends.

Bad games don't count.

From an aggregated review standpoint only one franchise has earned the most number of awards out of the three listed there and that's uncharted.

Game with most number of goty of course goes to The Last of Us with 200+.

The Souls series

Definitive? Not at all. What other games besides other souls games did it define?
Summons75  +   28d ago
It brought back skill and challenges in game and threw out the handholding last gen was obsessed with because "broader audience" So yes it was defining because someone mentions Demon's Souls or Dark Souls you automatically know what they are talking about.

I wouldn't consider Portal defining, they were fun but way to easy and short. Mass Effect 1, Uncharted 2, The Last of Us, Xenoblade Chronicles...those are defining games.

Mass Effect probably because people from all platforms adore the series

The portal games were great fun though
LogicalReason  +   28d ago
Why do people find the Portal games so amazing? I mean, they're damn good games and a lot of fun with plenty of lulz but they are far from "definitive" of an entire generation.

Even a game series like Uncharted I think is much better...better stories, characters, game play, etc.

Meh, whatever, this is an "opinion" piece after all...just wish people would quit spouting their unfounded opinions as "fact".
