Are Nintendo's Amiibo's Too Expensive?

Would you pay $12.99 for each figurine? IGN's Jose and Daemon discuss. (amiibo, Wii U)

Yeah.. not interested at 13 bucks a pop.. that's asking too much, even though the die-hard nerds are going to chew these things up... I consider mysel a hard core Nintendo guy, but there's no way I'm spending that much on some toys..... Nintendo is marketing them as "bring them over to your buddys house and battle", but Wii Us install base is so small, that personally, not alot o my riends own a wii U...
Geekman  +   114d ago
People with no Wii U or 3DS are buying these things for decoration. They're not restricted to platform owners only.

As far as price goes, For 13 bucks I'll buy a couple. Yes, kinda high, but 13 bucks really isn't a surprising price range nor too high for casuals or collectors. What did you expect it to cost with the tech inside it?
our_games_are_art  +   114d ago
I remember reading reports/speculation early on that they may have been as high as 19.99 $
Now 12.99$ is too much!?
Truthandreason  +   114d ago
the "tech" inside these are just NFC tags which can be bought for about $1.10 a piece on Amazon, I would imagine Nintendo gets them for pennies since they buy in bulk, straight from the source.
bullymangLer  +   114d ago
$13 dollars is too much, for nicely detailed figurines that comes to life??

It's okay, McDonalds is always hiring.

$13 for a figurine that is tied to ONE game each? Is in no doubt expensive! You can spin it however you want ;)
OtakuDJK1NG  +   114d ago
@LOL_WUT

As always you are misinform

The Amiibos will work across multiple titles not just one
ChickeyCantor  +   114d ago
Otaku,

Ssshhh he is probably also sleeping with Zoe Quinn. Run dude.

Worst part is people don't think they'll get sucked into anything but next year Nintendo will most likely come out with more alongside characters they've released first but in different poses and they'll eat it up. I bet there is people here who has called Disney Infinity toys and Skylanders but this is totally fine.

You know where these things will actually be in a few years....in a box, collecting dust not being displayed

This is something you can buy and display proudly

"they will eat it up".

Yeah because Nintendo is holding a gun to their head.
On what planet do the likes of you live where everything is forced and not from own initiative?

So what if they end up in a box collecting dust, what is it to you? How the hell is it affecting you?

Seriously cut it with this crap dude. Not interested? Then simply don't buy them. It's non of your business if someone wants to pay 13 bucks for these figurines.

Oh dear someone is getting really upset over someone elses opinion

"How the hell is it affecting you?"

Take your own advice man instead of getting so touchy with everyone and acting like a 10 year old throwing a tantrum, not just to me but almost everyone

Don't you get bored from commenting on only Nintendo articles. Not like it makes you bias or anything /s

"acting like a 10 year old throwing a tantrum."
BS mate and you know it.

You are deliberately preaching this tired idea of Nintendo fans being incapable of making a good decision. You're the one being juvenile. It's not just an opinion. You're insinuating people buying these figurines are idiots and hypocrites ( skylander comparison ). You are constantly insulting people under the umbrella "it's my opinion lol" as if you're immune to criticism.

You have no right to tell others they are acting like 10 year olds when you're the one showing sheer ignorance.

You're pure toxic. Why are you even here?

"Don't you get bored from commenting on only Nintendo articles. Not like it makes you bias or anything /s"

I've criticized Nintendo plenty, but I don't hide behind juvenile crap to indirectly insult people, only then to pretend no one has the rights to criticize me.

Keep the insults coming buddy, I'll be here all night :)

"I've criticized Nintendo plenty"

If you say so...
ChickeyCantor  +   114d ago
There we go ladies and gents. Foxtrot as usual pointing the blame elsewhere. Because obviously he can't ever be wrong on anything. He is always right. /s

You intelectually dishonest man child. Im glad you atleast admit you're just here to provoke.

I was barely insulting you. I'm simply critizing you for your toxic behaviour. And your retort? "Hur durr you are like a 10 year old, keep insulting me". Pathetic.

@chickeycantor let fox speak his mind, just dont write anything to his comments, him and Lol both look for attention, to piss people off.....if its not complaining about little things they complain about things they have no information on for example lol wut think the amiibo work on one game, if he was intelligent and read more he would know it would work on many games, then you have fox trot complaining about a little thing that every company do, even if they switch the design and sell it over it will just be like any other product, ps3 fat, ps3 slim, game boy, game boy color, psp 1000, psp 2000, psp 3000, psp go......its all common sense.....so dont worry about their post, when they see nintendo they just like to act like a little girl......when you pay a little girl no attention, they will eventually stop
Shnazzyone  +   114d ago
I expected them for 19.99 a pop so these are pretty inexpensive in my eyes. Preordering Link and samus tomorrow. I don't really mind if they aren't terribly utilized. They are nintendo made figures. Nice size and detail. I want it for decoration. Plus, I expect these things are gonna be very collectable.

No they are priced perfectly.
wonderfulmonkeyman  +   114d ago
Considering the high level of detail and quality, I'd say they're worth it.
eworthington0  +   114d ago
12.99 is really not that steep.
I dont think I will buy one only because I feel like a nerd as it is.
I have a daughter haha.
But I wouldnt mind buying a couple for my sister.

I think the price is just fine.
ZeekQuattro  +   114d ago
I happen to like that price. I intend to get Link, Fox & Samus in the least.

they look awesome and are not much higher priced than most action figures, and they have tech in them to interact with games

quit digging for something to bitch about
zalanis  +   114d ago
i dont get how this is too much. some of the SKYLANDERS figures go for 14.99 and disney infinity frozen figures are same so how is this too much. nintendo haters are just too many.
DryBoneKoopa85  +   114d ago
Price is good for me! I have all of them paid off. Can't wait to see what Nintendo has instore for them. Thinking about getting a light up glass case to put in my house to display them all.
LordMe  +   114d ago
They are not priced any different then Skylanders and Disney.

However all of them are a ripoff.
SliceOfTruth888  +   114d ago
They are insanely overpriced id say 8.99 max each.....and yes I have them all preordered
Xb1ps4  +   114d ago
Really... 4 dollars more puts it in the insane category?!
Gravity_DoGG  +   114d ago
When wii u get a redesign they can be used on the "NEW" gamepad, or whatever it's called...
paulcek  +   114d ago
but you can already use the amiibos with the gamepad...
nato25  +   114d ago
I think the most important thing we need to know is what the *** do these things do. Yes the figures themselves look pretty awesome and I wouldnt mind just having it on my desk as a collectors item. But so far we know in Smash we can use it as some sort of CPU that represents us in fights ? Why would anyone really want that, dont you want to fight yourself ?

And I still dont know how other games are going to use it. What possible purpose could these toys serve in a game like Mario Kart 8 ? If they want these to be successful they need to show more details and be transparent with the consumer. At the moment Im not sold at all.
ChickeyCantor  +   114d ago
They simply store data...They are practically figurines with an ID tag. So games can identify which figurine it is. Hypothetically a game that detects you have put Samus near the gamepad could give you a plasma gun in game ( it really comes down to what the gamedeveloper does with it ). Or even unlock a character.

Everything else is a memory card... lol That's it. I'm sure it can only hold data for one game though.

These are very well made. They are certainly worth $13. However, I will not be purchasing any of them.
stragomccloud  +   114d ago
I'm buying these just to collect. Well.... not all of them. Anything Zelda or Metroid related is a must have for me, though.

Nintendo have done a TERRIBLE job explaining how these will be used. If the die hard fans are scratching their heads, consumers will be lost. Which figures work with which games, how does the Starfox figure work in Captain Toads game? Or with Mario Kart? Why do they have SSMB logos on them? Will they release figures with Mario Kart logos? How do they 'work' with the games? Can they only store data for one game? Nobody seems to know, and the scant details provided are slim at best.

Also it is a HORRID name. Someone needs to speak up in these product meetings. Wii U, Amiibo, New 3DS. Come on Nintendo you can do better.
Darkfist  +   114d ago
even if its $20 fanboys gona eat it up anyway, they make the smash figures work on some games here and there then make another one that need new figures
Pinkdolphinyfg  +   114d ago
I would gladly get the Link or Samus figure to have as a desk decoration. If amiibos take of which they will, Nintendo is definitely going to make alot more and these first additions are going to be worth alot down the road.
shaw98  +   114d ago
The price is right. Highly detailed, works across multiple games. I would pay this price just for the figure it's self to be honest.
