Games Journalism Is Broken And Needs To Die

One Angry Gamer "Use Donotlink.com if you need to discuss an article from a site you feel contributes nothing to the growth of gaming culture. Use cached and archived links. No longer retweet from sites that are purposefully baiting to push a selfish and anti-gaming agenda. These are the first steps to killing this festering mound we call “games journalism”. It’s broken; here’s how we kill it.

The next step is to organize. Find a group where you can share, discuss and keep in contact about who you contact and what you’re contacting them about. Contact owners and editors at smaller websites to get them to join in on movement. Sites like Gamerheadlines.com, Gamesnosh, Brightsideofthenews.com or any other website that had the courtesy of exposing the GamerGate scandal."

The very first line of the description:

"One Angry Gamer "Stop feeding the click-bait. Don’t click into anymore articles that you know are designed to rile up an audience"

OK, I will take your advice, good sir!

Halo2ODST21144d ago

Why don't you actually read it, it's quite informative.

mhunterjr1144d ago

Isn't this sensationalized headline also click-bait....

Hypocrites....

Well, if you're completely okay with articles like this from the mainstream sites:

‘Gamers’ don’t have to be your audience. ‘Gamers’ are over. Exclusive – Leigh Alexander
https://archive.today/l1kTW

We Might Be Witnessing The ‘Death of An Identity’ – Luke Plunkett
https://archive.today/YlBhH

The End of Gamers – Dan Golding
https://archive.today/L4vJG

A Guide to Ending “Gamers” – Devin Wilson
https://archive.today/2t93l

The death of the “gamers” and the women who “killed” them – Casey Johnson
https://archive.today/i928J

Then feel free to continue to support the old regime.

*shrugs*

*EDIT: That's a fair point Mike. Old habits sometimes die hard. I'll truncate the last part. Hopefully it's direct enough to drive the point home.

i don't think mhunterjr has a problem with your message but with title you have chosen to express your opinion.

your title basically says don't give this kind of journalism the time of day but your article also uses the same method you are trying to educate gamers to stop clicking on

mhunterjr1144d ago

William, you are THE LAST person that needs to be lecturing folks on click-bait haha. The mainstream sites can get bad, but some of the crap you've posted easily takes the cake.

WilliamUsher1144d ago (Edited 1144d ago )

Flamebait? Totally guilty of it, for sure.

Going head-first into console war trolling? Yep. Not going to deny it.

However, have I ever gone out of my way to demonize any sect, group, community or movement in game culture? Have I ever said that you core gamers need to give up the games you love in order to fit in with a specific agenda by a specific group?

These people are actively trying to CHANGE the industry and mold it into what they want.

Put aside any grievances you've had with my console-war stuff and think about what they're doing.

Now if you're okay with it, then that's your choice. However, consider what they're saying and who they're getting to back them. They have Joss Whedon, Tim Schafer, and all the major gaming media outlets supporting them.

What do you think will happen as they begin to pressure more and more devs/studios/media to do what they want? You have to ask yourself if you're okay with the culture of video games being shaped by social justice warriors.

Just think about it.

EDIT: I'd also like to make it clear that inclusion is still important in the industry and that part needs to continue to be fostered for growth. This isn't a rebuttal against inclusion, it's a rebuttal against fascists who simply want to dictate and control the media we consume.

William,

It's hard to believe that you have legitamate concerns about gaming journalism when you are, knowingly, a part of the problem.

If you practiced what you preached, people might actually listen to what you have to say. Trying to position yourself as 'bad, but not as bad as some other folks because- reasons' doesn't help your argument all all, especially when the relativity of their actions versus yours is going to change depending on who you ask.

If you want to effect positive change, first, stop doing the crap you do. That would be a step in the right direction.

WilliamUsher1144d ago (Edited 1144d ago )

Well it's up to you decide. I simply presented you the option.

It's not as if the other side would.

As mentioned in the article, DON'T spread the article, spread the word. If you want to block or DoNotClick every article you see my name attached to, then DO SO. The point of the article is to say you can actually enact change from the top down. I can say this because I'm adaptable. I love games regardless.

But if you really don't like the direction the industry is heading in (i.e., censorships over dissenting opinions, pressuring devs to change/alter games to the way the media sees fit, pressuring gamers to agree or "get out"), at least take the opportunity to exercise these options, even if it's only against whatever comes from what I've written.

Heck, I've always voiced this concern about this issue almost more than I've done console-war stuff (a lot of it at CB) but it rarely ever appeared here so you wouldn't see it (or if it did it just wasn't well-received since it wasn't click-bait, the irony.)

But again, it's up to you to decide. If you want to lump all sites into the same category, fine. If you don't think it's an issue at all. Fine.

The whole point was to make you aware (since the SJWs already decided to enact a blackout and choose for you), what you do beyond that is up to you.

DefenderOfDoom21144d ago

I'm too lazy to be an activist. Can I just use adblock instead?

Mikelarry1144d ago (Edited 1144d ago )

Actually a very good read.

lol at all those articles "gamers are over". if gamers are over would that not mean the end of gaming as a whole because i mean the people who enjoy gaming are WAIT FOR IT !!!GAMERS!!!!. OH THE HORROR I mean what "gaming journalist" writes this stuff

all in all the only thing that is over is gaming journalism, gamers are questioning what they read and who writes these articles which to me is a good thing.

wheresmymonkey1144d ago
