The fighting games that time forgot

Fighting games have been something of a niche since the turn of the millennium, but in recent years, the genre has experienced a strong resurgence, thanks in part to games like the Street Fighter IV series, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and the Killer Instinct reboot; fighting games are becoming relevant again. Streaming services like Twitch have seen a huge rise in the popularity of fighting game tournaments, bringing with it more awareness of the fighting game community than ever before. Soon to be released titles like Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat X and Super Smash Bros 4 (as well as the constant milking of Street Fighter IV) are all proof that fighting games are a force to be reckoned with once again, but the genre is often dominated by just a few big name franchises. To that end, let’s take a trip through gaming history and take a look at some of the best and most obscure fighting games that time forgot, and for laughs, throw in a few that probably should stay forgotten. (Arcade, Mortal Kombat 10, PS2, Retro, Street Fighter IV, Super Smash Bros., Tekken 7, Xbox)

I miss Clayfighter... I'd love to see a new one, but I doubt it'll ever happen.

Remember xmen arcade machine , 2d beat em up , iceman could drop big ice balls on fighters heads, juggle in the air, etc , like to see it on ps4, pretty please Sony.

Forgive me if that was one of the games mentioned ,I admittedly never read article, for I know every game ever released due to my age.

You are thinking Xmen: children of the atom. It was made for saturn and PS1.

Primal Rage was good. The Jaguar version was a fairly well made port. Better than the 3DO but the Saturn and PS1 versions are the best. The arcade version is on the PS2 midway arcade classics 2.

Samurai spirits also , OK it was more of a sword em up but I remember the zooming in when the fighters for close combat and camera view retreating when they parted , added so much dynamics to the game , another I'd like to see if snk sell it Sony ..please!!

Should do side scrolling beat em ups in next article , shadow warriors , double dragon , ninja warriors....

Does anybody remember Time Killers? That game was fun as hell. You could chop off limbs and people would have to try to fight you with one arm!
mcstorm  +   336d ago
I don't remember that game but I remember Toshio blade which was kind of the same thing loved one and two on the psx. There was also another game I can't remember tone name of which has aliens in and one had what looked like giant yoyo's that was a good game too.

I do think last gen was a bit lacklustre on the fighting front.

I LOVED Time Killers!

All the fighters were people from different periods of time. King Arthur, some punk dude with a leather jacket, mohawk, and a chainsaw...

But yeah, you could get all of your limbs chopped off, and if you still won after that you got a "Limbless Victory". It was so funny watching people hop around with no arms or legs and headbutting the enemy.

Good call man! I forgot about that game.

My friends and I used to love playing Time Killers in the arcade. I liked how your arms and legs had there own button. It came out in the arcade about the same time as Mortal Kombat 1. These games are what made me like fighting games. Street Fighter never captured my attention until after these games.
I want to get Time Killers for Sega Genesis to add to my collection but is kind of rare and expensive. I hope I find a copy in the wild for cheap one day.

Reading this reminded me of the Def Jam games. Only played the first 2 but they were pretty fun from what I remember.

I have lots of difficulty with fighters, I'm just not good. But I really like fight girls, the mechanics allow an idiot like me to have fun. Although it was criticized as a bad game, its a good example of there is an audience for every game.

I liked TMNT: Tournament Fighters.

I'd like to see a new Bloody Roar, I found it quite fun on the GameCube.

Lmao, I think I was the only one who played the hell out of Shaq fu! Oh man good times.

- Toshinden
- Power Stone
- Tobal
- Ehrgeiz
- TMNT: Tournament Fighters
- Star Gladiator
- Samurai Spirits
- Fatal Fury
- Art of Fighting
- Bloody Roar
- Fighting Vipers
- Darkstalkers
and the list goes on...

Hopefully, fighting genre will be back like the old days again. Don't get me wrong, right now i'm satisfied with Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, Persona 4 Ultimate, USF IV, Tekken, Jojo Bizzare, DBZ, etc. But too many iconic fighting games got MIA...
