1080p will come to Xbox One games, but at a cost

It's a magical bullet point on a list of features that proves that your game is next-generation, and there are groups of players online who sneer at anything that can't quite hit that goal.

Diablo 3 on the Xbox One, for instance, couldn't quite get there. The original response was to drop the resolution down to 900p and keep the frame rate. A smooth game, many would argue, is worth sacrificing a few lines of resolution. The problem is that this solution created a PR problem for Microsoft, a company that is scared of consumers seeing the Xbox One as a less-powerful console compared to the PlayStation 4.

The story is too old to be commented.
SaveFerris1188d ago

MS should leave it up to the developers to decide what is best.

FordGTGuy1188d ago

Microsoft does leave it up to devs... they've said this countless times.

BiggerBoss1188d ago (Edited 1188d ago )

They didn't leave it up to the devs of Diablo, which is what this article is a response to

HeWhoWalks1187d ago

Did you read the article? The author stresses the problem with Diablo for X1 is the fact that no such option was provided, here.

TFJWM1187d ago

Blizzard disagrees with you, unless you think they are lying about it...

"And Microsoft was just like, 'This is unacceptable. You need to figure out a way to get a better resolution.' So we worked with them directly, they gave us a code update to let us get to full 1080p," Blizzard's John Hight told Eurogamer.

gangsta_red1187d ago

@Neocores
I'm also guessing you didn't read that the FPS would hardly be even noticed by players.

Dlacy13g1187d ago

Yes MS came to them and said no it needs to be 1080p. But to be fair MS rolled up their sleeves and helped Diablo get to 1080p 60fps on Xbox One. its not like they said no you need to do and we wont help.

Also the frame dips are slight occasional dips into the 50's not some game halting frame drop.

mikeslemonade1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

Microsoft is listening to PlayStation fans lol

Stop listening to your opponent.

The main reason why they are doing this is because they are recieving huge negative press. But the problem is they will recieve more negative press when the games perform even worst.

Just stick to a slightly blurrier version for the sake of having the game try to run in parity. What they need to do is lower price than the PS4.

uptownsoul1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

@Gangsta_Red
Well I'm guessing you didn't read that "the differences in graphical fidelity between future games may not be as subtle as what we see in the latest version of Diablo."

donthate1187d ago

MS should have done what Sony did, and just made Diablo 3 with 1080p, locked 60fps with temporal projection. That is to render even lines and odd lines separately alternating.

If KZ: Shadowfall got away with calling that 1080p, surely MS can do it!

Would solve MS frame rate issue and achieve 1080p!

The double standard is amazing!!! :D

BlackWolf121187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

They didn't leave it up to Blizzard.

How the eff can you say that when this article directly talks about how they just DIDN'T do that?

@YouAreSalty
The game IS 1080p, just the multiplayer isn't.

BX811187d ago

@biggerboss
Agreed but this time ms wasn't wrong. The game clearly is 1080p, the draw back is what? A seldom 6-10 frame rate drop? Ms made the right call here. Clearly games like the witcher run beautifully on the xb1, so we know the machine is capable of great things. In this case the devs didn't know how to fully optimize the game for xb1 and ms stepped in showed them how to improve it.

cell9891187d ago

MS is known for bullying devs, so when I read MS helped a dev get 1080p on xbone. It really means MS pressured the dev to get 1080p on xbone. MS has always been about parity at all costs, not just in games but everything MS does. They have this complexity of feeling like theyre loosing, and rightfully so with a weaker console.

If Sony spent billions developing the PS4, getting all those higher specs, its only fair their gamble pays off now. MS didnt want to invest much in actual hardware and now they want things to magically be equal for both? no. This will teach them to invest greatly in the next gen console, Im actually eagerer to see what MS will come up with next, be sure they wont make the same mistakes. The lessons they learned with the awful xbone will only make their next console way better. See PS4>PS3 for reference

Prime1571187d ago

@YouAreSalty, "If KZ: Shadowfall got away with calling that 1080p, surely MS can do it! "

I wasn't aware that KZ "got away with it." Even this current polygon article mentioned it by saying, "You can lock the frame rate of Killzone: Shadow Fall at 30 fps if you'd like, although the controversy over whether or not that game runs at 60 fps while displaying a 1080p resolution has led to a lawsuit." and linking to this article: http://www.polygon.com/2014...

Even though single player was 1080p... Now boxes are going to have to say SP/MP when different.

Feldman90001187d ago

Well I'm guessing you didn't read Sony is better than Microsoft. It's been said countless times.

UltimateMaster1186d ago

Xbox One: 12 Compute Units
PS4: 18 Compute Units.

Yeah, there's a huge difference and you'll need to make sacrifices somewhere. Either way, the PS4 version will play better.

DeathOfTheFanBoy1187d ago

Not even all PS4 games are 1080p, people act like it's the holy grail, it's a load of rubbish!

SilentNegotiator1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

But Ps4 does 1080p ~90% of the time, Xbone ~50% of the time. http://www.ign.com/wikis/xb...
It's an even uglier picture for Xbone when you exclude cross gen games, which are typically less demanding. Xbone ~36%, Ps4 ~88%.

mcstorm1187d ago

Its just something people can bicker about if the Xbox one and ps4 had the same specs people would still find a fault with both of them.

At the end of the day if you want the best version of a 3rd part game then buy it on a pc its that simple console games have always lacked behind them and always will.

I buy a console for pickup and play and knowing it will last 5 or so years where a pc dose not.

ArmrdChaos1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

(1.2.1) LOL....and what is the point. Are you telling me you are not going to enjoy The Order because it is sub-1080p?

Numbers and links...proof for the proxy master race. You people do know that these are JUST video games and only a means of entertainment...correct?

SilentNegotiator1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

He said not all Ps4 games are 1080p, I pointed out that an overwhelming majority ARE. sub-1080p is an exception on Ps4; it's quite commonplace on Xbox one. That's the difference.

You're free to note; HE brought up the Ps4, not me.

thehobbyist1187d ago

Here's the thing though. PS4 has MORE 1080p games than Xbone. And when PS4 games aren't 1080p. They're usually 60fps. So either way PS4 is showing it's hardware superiority over Xbone.

tgunzz1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

D3 is not a good example for this article... This is extreme nitpicking. There are games on both consoles that don't completely lock at 60fps(1080p) or otherwise, so why go there??? It's good to see MS is aiding in learning the landscape of xb1. I have D3 on both my xb1, and ps4, and I must say there is no visible/gameplay difference.

SaveFerris1187d ago

You purchased two copies of the game?

tgunzz1187d ago

@saveferris, I purchased one, and the other was given to me.

mike_honcho1187d ago

why not sell one if there isn't a noticeable difference?

tgunzz1187d ago

@mikehoncho, I will keep them both. When my son here, he will play it on one system, and I can play it another. Also, I never played a diablo game. It's a great game!

"1080p will come to Xbox One games, but at a cost"

Does the author of this opinion piece know that 1080p comes to the PS4 at a cost? A lot of games that run at 1080p at the PS4/X1/WiiU come at a cost. Developers cut corners to make games run at 1080p, even PS4 games.

irepbtown1187d ago

You are right, however some consoles will need more corner cutting than others.

What I have a problem with is this line: ''subtle change that takes effect on the updated PlayStation 4 build too'' - This clearly shows the PS4 version is being downgraded to get that 'same across all platform' nonsense that all developers are going for. Diablo 3 may not be the best example, however we saw it with Destiny, PS4/X1 versions being held back because of last gen.

Blaze9291187d ago

I'd like to know why we as gamers are being distracted by some resolution nonsense instead of asking where the hell are our games at on PS4 and Xbox One.

xDHAV0K24x1187d ago

it's the thing to do this gen

cee7731187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

@havoc

I take it your A new gamer

Its been like this since forever
Ps1 vs N64
Ps2 vs Xbox OG
Ps3 vs Xbox 360

History just finds A way of repeating itself

Its just the ball is in A different court this gen.

If the ps4 was weaker than the xbone it would have been the same scenario just reversed with media counting pixels and frames last gen the difference was way smaller and look how fanboys raged my multiplat is better than yours etc.

Red dead redemption resolution gate
Mafia 2 missing grass
GTAIV resolution gate
Call of Duty resolution gate
Etc etc etc.

Mystogan1187d ago

Diablo 3 running at 900p is plain bullshit. Blizzard was just being lazy. If a game like Forza 5 can run 1080p 60fps. Then a game like Diablo 3 should be able to reach 4K - 60fps. Diablo 3 is not a graphically intense game.

GW2121186d ago

Ha, talk about a game that had to cut a ton of corners to hit 1080p/60fps.

The_KELRaTH1187d ago

MS AND the devs should leave it upto the gamer by allowing a few graphical setting options.

Azzanation1187d ago

Yeah they do. Remember Ryse and Dead Rising 3 and every other game that didnt hit 1080p. They did this to shut fanboys up. I dont blame them either because if D3 was 900p this article would be called Xbone fails again at 1080p and the comments would be full of hate. Glad there being competitive.

CYCLEGAMER1187d ago

Well I just tweeted Phil Spencer and voiced my concerns and this was his response "@CYCLEGAMER1 Studios decide, even our first party studios, I won't dictate a framerate and/or resolution on a game."

TAURUS-5551187d ago

MS and its xbox1 is going down...really down

turdburgler10801187d ago

The game never dropped below 53fps. Oh my how terrible. A framerate difference no one would notice if there wasn't a little graph from digital floundry showing it. The SDF is just trying to turn this into something it's not.

Eddie201011187d ago

Diablo 3 is a great game but it's a last gen game that should have hit 1080p 60 FPS very easily.

beerzombie1187d ago

When you start making games for a living your statement will be more regarded as a fact.

headshotfrosty1187d ago

Leave it to MOST developers. Not ALL. I think MS realizes that they need as much PR fixing as possible. It seems like developers are used to going about things a certain way and MS has made things a bit more challenging this go round. The developers that REALLY want to optimize, will. The rest will do what they always have done and struggle with X1 until the platform is widely understood and new development practices allow for better X1 optimization, out of the door.

Iamnemesis48801187d ago

All games console company's should leave it to the devs

Matt6661186d ago

considering some of there games do run at 1080p

AuToFiRE1186d ago

Both MS and Sony should start giving the devs something to actually work with..

After looking at diablo framerate test on xbox one....

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

there really wasn't much lost in the framerate. Seems pretty consistent to be honest.

Here`s the ps4 1080p vs xbox one 900p framerate test

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

poor_cus_of_games1187d ago

That ps4 vs xbox1 video is pointless since both versions don't have a day one patch yet. I would rather see a comparison now.

FordGTGuy1188d ago (Edited 1188d ago )

Eurogamer tested the Xbox One version in the toughest to run part of the game and found a drop to 53+ fps but all other times the game stayed at 60 fps.

They however seemed to not find it needing to also test this PS4 version in this condition too saying themselves that they did not even try to replicate it with the PS4 and only tried it out after the update in normal areas where both the PS4 and XOne version stayed at 60.

Eurogamer if you're going to do a proper comparison at least test the versions properly. It should be noted that 53+ fps is the lowest I've seen this title reportedly run at on Xbox On but before the update the PS4 version was hitting the mid 40's in just random places where both the Xbox One and PS4 version now stay steady in the 60s.

Without a doubt the PS4 version also has frame drops under the same conditions that cause the XOne version to hit 53+ fps.

imt5581187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

PS4 version had framerate drops before, but

Xbox On but before the update the PS4 version was hitting the mid 40's

Well, Xbone version had steady 60fps @900p. After patching to 1080p, nope.

mrpsychoticstalker1188d ago

It doesn't matter, I prefer gameplay over graphics. Plus those triple AAA games coming look stunning anyway.

Master-H1187d ago (Edited 1187d ago )

Right because you can't have both, it's one or the other...

colonel1791187d ago

It seems to be that way at the moment, unless you have a PC. The PS4 has been more consistent in 1080p/60fps but it's not yet perfect. In reality, by the time consoles can do 1080p/60fps easily, we will be debating in countless articles about 4k resolutions.

I, too, prefer gameplay over resolution and fps, after all, I barely notice a difference in resolution and I have never actually noticed the difference between 30fps and 60 fps.

Lennoxb631187d ago

I prefer gameplay AND graphics. Nether having anything to do with resolution.

kopko1188d ago

I hate those graphic and resolution whores. People really need to look back how old games have looked, and i can tell you, the gameplay was way better than games nowadays. In my opinion its gameplay > 60FPS > graphic/resolution.

Agent20091187d ago

Gameplay is strongly tied with graphics, believe me.

kopko1187d ago

I have to strongly disagree with you, graphics does not matter at all to me. Maybe it does to you, but not to me. fyi, today i am still playing mmorpg from year 2003, coz its damn better than mmo's nowadays. Graphics sucks, but i dont care coz its fun as hell and the gameplay mechanics rocks.

Imalwaysright1187d ago

"Gameplay is strongly tied with graphics"

Tell that to DMC fans. I bet that they'll disagree with you. BTW if you haven't noticed I'm talking about PS2 DMC games and the reboot.

WeAreLegion1187d ago

Because the gameplay from Contra can be compared to the gameplay from Just Cause 2.

Come on, man.

S2Killinit1187d ago

you are missing the point. the question is whether you can have both. and the answer is yes. Higher resolution has nothing to do with gameplay. Its just better to have a higher resolution and frame rate, there is just no doubt about that.
