In defence of Final Fantasy's Squall

Mark Ankucic -- "Despite the fact I’m about fifteen years late to this party, I feel as though it’s about time someone defended the idea of ‘emo’ in the Final Fantasy series. For better or worse, the entire series has been fairly dark and hopeless, but that was because in every game the situation was dire -- one way or another, your protagonist was going to suffer, and the world’s end was looming."

This is the game that got me hooked in the FF series! Squall and Tidus are cool characters.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory1189d ago

Indeed! People who played FFVII first would never accept any of FF games after.

mrpsychoticstalker1189d ago

Best of the best games ever . That omega oh man. I spent hours trying to defeat her. SQUALL and I would understand each other very well

TheOneWhoIsTornApart1189d ago

@OtakuDJK1NG. Not true. FF VII was my very first Final Fantasy game and I loved every other one that came out afterwards. I loved VIII very much.

goldwyncq1189d ago

FFVII was my second FF game yet my favorite one is IX.

jazzlover5111189d ago

I totally agree! It's been a while since I played FF VIII last time, I'm going to play it when I have time. I'm stuck with FF X HD, and gosh how I missed that game. I love both VIII and X!

People just hated on him because he was another thing people could criticize about the game since it wasnt a direct FF VII sequel...something the new fans brought in by FFVII were ticked off about despite the fact each game is a new story.

Squall has some of the best character development in all the FF games. From discs 1 to 4 you see his character slowly transistion from a lonley, selfish jerk to a brave heroic leader. Each disc you see a differnt side of him and through conversations you see this change reflect on him as a person.

I mean the guy even had a backstory to why he was selfish and a jerk, the little boy you see in the rain waiting for his "sis" was when he finally broke and shut himself out from the world. The last person after his parents "leaving" was ripped away from him just like them. From an emotional perspective it's obvious why he's so closed and doesn't want to ger involved with peopke, hell it even explains his "I don't care attitude" for the world.

I really think peopke who say this emo crap just hear it off other people along with the other over exaggerated, nit picky points over this entry. Then you have people who just judge him based on what he's like at the beginning, not where his character development takes him.

FFVIII is one of the better FF games out there and Squalls development is the best in the series.

".something the new fans brought in by FFVII were ticked off about despite the fact each game is a new story. "

No. No one cared that the previous installments were not prequels. So that doesn't make sense.

"I mean the guy even had a backstory to why he was selfish and a jerk, .... hell it even explains his "I don't care attitude" for the world. "

He was a whiny and bitchy trough out the WHOLE game. There simply wasn't much of development with this guy. Even with all the people around him who cared about him he still decided to go full on emo. Just because he had a sad backstory doesn't mean he should be an emo git trough out the whole game. It doesn't make him interesting it just makes him annoying and petty. FF8 was simply bad.

Zidane Tribal from FFIX also had a tough life but he grew up. He stopped giving a sh/t. And the setting of FF9 was more whimsical. How the hell do they manage that?

"I really think people who say this emo crap just hear it off other people along with the other over exaggerated, nit picky points over this entry. "

No it was just THAT bad.

"not where his character development takes him. "
There is non. That's why people hate it. This guy is 2D as hell.

" is the best in the series."

the problem with squall was that he was scared of loss, of getting left behind. which is why he chose to not get along with others. the GF's caused him to forget the details but he still felt afraid to get along.

however, there were many times that his personality just jumped. but i guess that was due to the introduction of rinoa.

lots of things i can say about this, but i am biased since this is one of my favourite ff's.

anyways, each has their own opinions. i understand more of the people hate squall then any others.

-Foxtrot1189d ago

Your pretty much one of the people I'm talking about above.

You call Squall yet there's so much evidence to support how greta his character development is.

Even if you don't like him you can't ignore that and say there isn't any development because there is.

"He was a whiny and b***** through out the WHOLE game"

No...just no ¬¬

It baffles me that so many Final Fantasy fans claim that Squall had no character development after playing through a 40+ hour story that primarily REVOLVES AROUND Squall's character development.

I suppose they are also the same so-called fans who claim Rinoa and Squall's relationship "came out of nowhere" (even though she spent 1 and a half discs flirting with him) and call Cloud a "jerk" because he was mildly abrasive for about 2 hours at the start of FFVII (even though he spends the rest of the game being fairly friendly and talkative).

DiscoKid1189d ago

To put it simply, Squall wasn't "emo". I don't think most criticizers know what the term means.

He was pensive. He wasn't an introvert for no reason. One thing I really liked about Squall was his thoughts. Even if he didn't talk much, you learn more about who he is through his thoughts. Hell, they even incorporated that into Dissidia and I loved it.

The importance of a character is development. Squall would be just a bad character if he had not changed, but he clearly did.

hkgamer1189d ago

his thoughts were what showed him as a character more. kinda makes you understand him abit more, though he was one pessimistic guy.

i dont understand why people think he didnt change at all. he joined into the group in his own little way, he expressed his feelings to rinoa. cant think of anything else, but they seem like big steps. especially since he never really understood himself why he avoided people until they found out about their childhood.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory1189d ago (Edited 1189d ago )

Squall is the BEST!!!
Squall was just the way he is. To prevent himself getting so emotional from becoming friends which others.

He is what I would describe not your typical JRPG main character.

The lonewolf type. But because of Rinoa he started becoming sympathetic to others.

FFVIII is the best FF to me and second Favorite JRPG.

DEATHxTHExKIDx1189d ago

Squall is probably my favorite FF hero. I felt like his character did a damn back flip and fell in love with Rinoa. Then again it could be I just don't like Rinoa lol.
