The Last of Us Remastered Sells 632K Worldwide Opening Week, PS4 Sales Up 50%

"The Last of Us Remastered hit store shelves on around the world on July 29. The game in its opening week managed to sell 632,030 units. The game helped increase PlayStation 4 sales by 51 percent to 178,164 units that week.

With opening week sales of 632,030 units it makes it the third biggest opening for the PlayStation 4. Only Watch Dogs and inFAMOUS: Second had bigger openings with sales of 1,596,933 and 698,489, respectively." (inFamous: Second Son, PS3, PS4, The Last Of Us, The Last Of Us Remastered, Watch Dogs)

Hard to tell

For a remastered version of a one year old game those sales are really impressive.
Those are very solid numbers for most AAA games, but for a PS3 port, that's just criminal. Naughty Dog should be in jail.

But I mean that in a good way.

Not really, just kidding on that last comment. I think is was a great and noble thing to bring TLOU to PS4, it's a great game that PS4 adopters who didn't have a PS3 should be able to play.

It's good for both gamers and to get the game even more exposure, because as many people as possible should experience TLOU. It's a great game.

And I know it's more than just a port.
So this ioi guy who is a known Xbox fanboy that runs Vgchartz, says he doesn't believe Sony's official numbers of 10 million sold because he can't find where he guessed wrong? So PS4 will remained under tracked by more than 600k units. Lmao

This website must be making stuff because they always under track PS4 figures and overstate the Xbone figures.

Blood Tears on the VG Chartz comments section said it best:
"The original games has gone on to sell more than 4.5 million units." What a joke! It passed 7 million copies already on the original, Sony already confirmed it. Much like 10 million PS4's and once again, no adjustments. Pathetic!"

I don't think this number is accurate, but I'm also wary of believing the 1.5 mil number, because if they had sold 1 million, they would have sent out a press release or something.
BarneyS  +   93d ago
The fact that they always adjust Xbox numbers after MS releases sales (shipped) numbers without asking questions is even more pathetic. But when Sony does it they don't beleive it..
aCasualGamer  +   92d ago
Don't trust VGChartz and their sources.

They have PS4 at 9,4 million units sold. Sony announced that they had sold more than 10 million units.

That's an error of about 600 000 units. I don't care what kind of sources they have but that's alot of units they missed out on in their calculations.

You know, I'm actually going to say the number is closer to what insiderp claimed (1.5 mil) They were spot on with the 10 million claim afterall. and vgcharts hasnt really ever overtracked playstation; they alweays undertrack.

and all these numbers are still only accounting for the last 3 days of july .

Wow I can't people actually believed The Last of Us sold 1.5 mil. Are you guys being serious? The original didn't even sell that mean in that time frame yet you expect it to sell 1.5 million? wow. Also if it did sell over 1 million they would have told us just like they did for inFamous. Watch in a month, Sony will say it sold 1 mil.
G20WLY  +   93d ago
^The original release carried only the draw of ND being the developers, since it was a new IP and many were sulking because it wasn't Uncharted.

Okay, the install base of PS3 was much larger than PS4 is now, but given:

-the incredible reviews (from both critics and users)
-the almost 250 GOTY awards
-some consider TLOU their "Game of the Generation"
-this is an improved version
-many PS4 owners never had a PS3
-PS4 haz noe gaemz/S

I don't see why it's so hard to believe TLOU:R could have sold over 1m copies, especially when you factor in digital downloads, since this game is considered a keeper by many. Just my opinion :^)

Congrats to Naughty Dog.

So glad people are still seeking for unique and different games such as this.

I thought COD and BF brainwashed people to the point they wouldn't even glance at a game such as this.

We need more TLOU type of quality in our industry.
AngelicIceDiamond  +   93d ago
Whoa didn't know there were sensitive COD and BF fans in here reading this.

You don't come across many games like TLOU everyday in the game industry.

Its a welcome whenever they are they made.

Yes we do. A game where story is critical and the actors deliver on their part where the characters become semi-real (almost real to me at least).

This is the type of game I want to play.

First of all, these are vgchartz bullshit numbers...not to be believed at all. I'm sure TLOU for ps4 sold much higher, if this pathetic sites history is to be accounted for.

just ask naughty dog. i dont here them thanking their customers for helping them sell one million in a night. soooooo..... i doubt it. sony never has a problem posting positive numbers.

hey six hundred thousand isnt bad. it is the same game they just sold to the public about a year ago. how many of that six hundred thousand, do you believe are new to tlou? im willing to bet no where near as many the number of returning ps loyalist.

so kudos to nd and sony, they sold the samething twice. that has to account for something. and i think it says great game, but also, a lack of greatness. no pun intended. though it is kind of funny and ironic.

The site admin ioi has responded about why they wont update their figures to 10 Million. They said that the reason they are missing 600k PS4 in their numbers is because they can't figure out what regions they are down in.

Vgchartz tracks shipped to retailers. At least that's what they said when defending MS over tracked numbers.

Key words: "Opening Week". If sales are consistently high like this, a month, or approximately 4 weeks, would probably yield 2.4 million units.

Then again if you believe VGChartz, PS4 has only sold 9.4 million PS4s.

Why would this number be any more accurate, especially since it doesn't count digital sales?
PS4isKing_82  +   93d ago
My god the sales Sony is having this gen is insane. Ps4 should be at 12 mil ww next month with the Destiny ps4 bundle. By Dec 31st they should be close to 16, 17 mil ww. Even Xbox is doing amazing with 5 mil shipped so far this year. And wiiu close to 7mil sold. I bet all those ppl saying console gaming is dead these last couple of years are feeling pretty stupid by now.

VGCHARTZ is so full of bologna. They still refuse to acknowledge that the PS4 is over 10,000,000 units sold through to consumers even after it was officially announced. Their site is an embarrassment and these numbers are totally bogus.

FireProChamp  +   93d ago
I agree. The leaked sales ledger that was released right before Gamescon had PS4 at 10 million+ sold showed Last of Us already over 1 million units sold.

Why is VGChartz even allowed on this site?
Eonjay  +   93d ago
I read the conversation. It was pretty shocking. He calls into question the legitimacy of official numbers, claims that his are accurate (while simultaneously admitting to really not know). He then ignores comments asking why VGC has undertracked according to other official reports as well. This is the most bogus thing I have ever heard.

He is refusing to update his numbers because he has them so messed up going back months that he doesn't know how to fix it.
AllAboutGaming  +   93d ago
I wish they would just ban VGChartz from the site. I enjoyed it when one of the forum members sent him this handy link.

http://www.scei.co.jp/corpo...

It is pretty audacious of him to claim that he knows more than Sony about the number of consoles they have sold. He was probably just hoping that they'd be ambiguous about their sales numbers like certain other companies.
Jdoki  +   93d ago
It seems like Sony are on top of their logistics this gen, as tracking sold to customer is harder to do than reporting shipped.

I suspect that Sony's figures are including a lot of independent and smaller retailers that NPD don't normally track - and VGChartz would have no idea how to track.
rainslacker  +   92d ago
To me it's pretty obvious where he "messed up". He under-tracked each month, and over time that added up. There was no single mistake, just biased calculations to derive a desired result.

@Jdoki
Apparently 98% of PS4 owners have connected their system. It actually isn't hard for these companies to know how many are sold to customers. It's not like they're left in the dark. I imagine there is some margin of error, but not the 8% that VGChartz seems to get away with.

You're an idiot... "That's all".... This is a remaster of a one year old game that according vgcharts, sold over 600,000 copies in its first week. The number sold world wide should be about one million by now. For a re-release this is very impressive. How many did tomb raiders definite edition sale it's first week?
rebeljoe14  +   93d ago
READ THE FREAKING ARTICLE, the 600,000 is only the first week. This game came out like three or four weeks ago so its probably in the 1 million or 2 million
Jdoki  +   93d ago
Might want to check the source of this news.

So far we've seen reports of 600k. 1million and 1.5million...

Until Sony report numbers everything is speculation.
whybag  +   93d ago
1) Don't exaggerate.
2) VGChartz is straight garbage.
3) TLoU was on sale for three days in North America and was the top seller on NPD, it set the 4th highest debut of the year in the UK. It might not have sold 1.5mil like insiderp claimed, but it sold big numbers.
DevilishSix  +   93d ago

I would believe Vgchartz is off by a lot considering their denial of Sony's official numbers for PS4 and have PS4 undertracked by a ridiculous amount. Insiderp numbers for PS4 are more accurate. A better guess or estimate than the highly unreliable Vgchartz.

Really?Where?I'd think that there shouldn't be any problems by now o_o here in germany it was impossible to purchase ps4 till late spring. Or at least extremly difficult. But now it's everywhere,Saturn, Media Markt, Real, Otto, Amazon...
hkgamer  +   93d ago
shortages still means it would sell a little more than that a week. i mean sony is probably producing atleast a million a month or atleast 500k a month right?

anyway, there are no shortages of ps4 at this moment.
MaxKingoftheWild  +   93d ago
Before Sony announced 10m sold I was telling another forum that sony still has shortages in the US. No, not the type that will stop you from being able to find one from walking into the store and picking one up. But the type that they are selling and retailers will have one on shelf before resupply. That is shortage and stock issues. And think about it, Sony sold 10m ps4s to customers at the beginning of August while only projecting 5m shipped at the end of march. That supports sell through being very high and stock being short. Even if sales slowed to the ps4 this quarter Sony would still show a good shipment number do to getting ps4 stock to an appropriate level on shelves (basically enough supply to always be in stock).
rebeljoe14  +   93d ago

This article's claim that TLOU Remastered only sold 698k in the first week is ludicrous. The game is still in the top 20 on Amazon's best sellers list after three weeks on sale. I'd say the actual numbers after 3 weeks is probably closer to 2.5 million games sold worldwide. This site isn't even good at being a joke.
