Phil Spencer opens up about the Rise of the Tomb Raider exclusivity deal, explaining that it fills an Uncharted-size hole in the Xbox line-up.
@christocolus Quote : OT: I believe over time MS will have this genre covered its inevitable as Phil keeps making references to UC and Tlou . Phil will assemble a team to start work on their own adventure ip. Problem is, first Uncharted came out a 7 YEARS AGO. MS had plenty of time to buy some small studio and invest in that studio to make some new action-adventure IP. I'm pretty sure that in 7 years that studio and new IP would be pretty established. Naughty Dog bring 3 Uncharted games on PS3 and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the new IP - The Last Of Us. WHO WOULD KNOW THAT The Last Of Us BECAME SO SUCCESSFUL! Microsoft doesn't have guts to make new in-house IP. Yes, that takes some time. But instead, they will spend money on some 3rd party game exclusivity and cut-off other platforms. NICE! @christocolus Quote : There are numerous devs out there all looking to show case their talent. MS needs to get the right team together under the right conditions and give them the right budget to suceed and you'll see results. The main reason why most games fail aint because the devs were all lazy, part of it is the way they are managed, the budgets they are given to create these games and the unrealistic dead lines. An example of this is the batman games and the spiderman games.one is painstakingly created while the other is a horrid mess with a much smaller budget and that's due to the way activision has poorly managed the spiderman franchise all these years. After this Tombraider deal,i bet we will see a new ip from MS challenging the next uncharted. Phil has stated their need for an exclusive adventure game on xbox and im most certain they've started working on it already. I RECOMMEND YOU TO READ THIS POST ( not just you, all of you here ) : http://www.neogaf.com/forum...
And Xbox can never buy an action adventure game as good as Uncharted…Because 2 words: "NAUGHTY…DOG"…ND is currently the best development studio in the Action/Adventure genre.
Well they have copied every other Sony franchise that is successful so eventually they will have something like Uncharted.
MS had their chance with Rare but they blew it.
@imt558&uptownsoul There is nothing wrong in owning studios and working out deals with third party,MS direction in the last seven years aint same now. Nadella wasn't running things then and Phil wasn't the head of xbox and most importantly MS actually does'nt need naughtydog to create a good adventure game similar to how Crystal dynamics didn't need ND to create the amazing tombraider reboot also Ms didn't need polyphony to create a good racing game( forza) and in the absence of bungie MS got 343 to continue Halo and BT to continue Gears both series will keep going on without Bungie or Epic. All phil needs to do is get the right talent together& create a team like they've done in the past. Truth is im actually Glad Phil is in charge now.its good to have a game dev/gamer in charge of the games division,he has stated his belief in owning ips and funding them,in his interview with cvg after gamescom he said they would start funding less 3rd party exclusives to better focus on 1st and 2nd party.this aint even the first time he has said this.some months ago he talked about building games similar to tlou and uc and pushing story content,so for all we know Platform Next or LXP could be working on an adventure ip. anything is possible.there are numerous ips still unannounced. Uncharted is great but saying ND are the only devs who can create good adventure games aint right.Tomb raider is an example and i know lots of gamers who prefer Tombraider reboot to uncharted. There are numerous devs out there all looking to show case their talent.
So I guess you'd consider Quantum Break more of a third person shooter then? Not trolling, just checking for consensus. And while MS doesn't own the studio, I believe they do own the ip.
Thing is Uncharted is a Brand that anything adventure will be compared to. No one took uncharted seriously until it released and became a cult hit. They called it Dude raider, then it sold 5 million and Then Uncharted 2 came out and changed the adventure landscape and genre all together. Suddenly it became an industry standard that everyone tried to mimic with big action set pieces and narrative heavy focus. Tomb Raider as an IP became stale, generic and lost its relevancy, Crystal Dynamics had to reinvent it just so they could compete, and they managed to do a pretty remarkable job. Tomb Raider has taken heavily from What Uncharted has established. Since there isn't anything in MS's line up that will go tooe to toe with Uncharted 4, this move was done to fill a void on Xb... Uncharted is a massive elephant of an IP, and its bound to sell bucket loads more now, given its PS4 exclusive and the Uncharted Fan base has migrated to said platform as well as having Xbox and Wii owners who never played Uncharted before.
sevir please stop. uncharted 1 didnt sell 5 million and people took notice. it hardly sold 1.5 million the year it came out. I remember it selling just a little bit more than heavenly sword and saying sony would choose it because shooters have a higher chance for sales. After uncharted 2 came out people went back to uncharted 1. tomb raider was going through to many changes and gaming changed. Main problem with TR was shooting was still lock on. TRlegends released in 06 sold 4.5 million TRA 07 sold 1.3 million and TRU 09 sold 2.6 million. After that they went back to the drawing board "Uncharted is a massive elephant of an IP" lol "Since there isn't anything in MS's line up that will go tooe to toe with Uncharted 4, this move was done to fill a void on Xb..." lol halo 5 will be bigger than uncharted i'll bet money on it
@jetlian Halo will be bigger because it has it's die hard fanbase who would buy it no matter what, plus by then it will be one of very few exclusives releasing for the Xbox One so you virtually funnel your customer into buying it (Cough, Halo 3) Sales do not indicate the quality of a game, just how main stream it is, how appeals to the masses because it sits in the comfort zone and is a FPS, a bit like COD. Would Microsoft have the balls to allow a dev to make something like "The Last OF Us"? I'm not sure they would.
please, so righteous, spare us this bitter rant
@uptownsoul to me the last tomb raider was better than any uc i played. sorry sony fans its my opinion. tr was dark and gritty, there is no way a pg13 game can even be compared to it. ms did a hell of a job on that deal. ms didnt make a adventure game better than uncharted, but someone else did. so they got that game kudos. so i guess its all how you look at it.
@jetlian You do realize that Halo and Uncharted are not even in the same genre right?... And I actually think that Uncharted would be bigger than Halo 5 anyways. Plus due to the shear number of PS4's out there compared to Xbox Ones....you can bet Uncharted will beat it in sales, especially after how well the Last of Us sold on the PS3 and the PS4...and how well ND is being recognized everywhere.
@Sevir "Uncharted is a massive elephant of an IP, and its bound to sell bucket loads more now, given its PS4 exclusive and the Uncharted Fan base has migrated to said platform as well as having Xbox and Wii owners who never played Uncharted before. " True that. And don't be surprised if Sony actually does release a remasters bundle of the PS3 Uncharted games close to the fourth one's release, which would mean the players who jumped ship from Microsoft or Nintendo to Sony would get to enjoy all four games.
""I wish we had an action-adventure game like that, but we don’t. So we must take.""
Beautiful post my friend. I believe they already have that game. Alan Wake is a wonderful series that needs more investment.
@ imt558 ""They gave the NFL more money for a fantasy football app than Take 2/Rockstar spent on Grand Theft Auto 5. Let that sink into your head when you excuse their lack of first party studios"" Goddamn. ____ @ jetlian The Uncharted games have sold 5 to 6.5 million each. Those pretty big numbers no matter how much you try to spin. It is a huge IP for Sony. Just because it's not the best selling franchise of all time and games like Gran Turismo sell more, doesn't change the fact that it's still a pretty major and successful IP. By your definition, Wii Play and Wii Fit are bigger and better IPs. lol gtfo
deividas genre or not halo sells more. shear numbers may effect uncharted sales but its doubtful. Halo is a bigger series. Shinmaster there is no spin from me your spinning and so was sevir! 5-6 million isnt equal to halo. if your talking about sales wii fit/sports are bigger ips. Better that depends on who you talk too. point I made was sevir tried to say MS had no answer to uncharted and thats clearly not the case
@jetlian "genre or not halo sells more" Ummm actually genre matters quite a lot actually because you are comparing an action adventure to a shooter....how about you compare a shooter to a shooter? So lets say Halo compared to Call of Duty...who wins now? And not to mention, Halo hit its stride when Shooters were the kings of gaming and thats all people were playing
call of duty does and? is COD coming to xbo yea so what of it?
Maybe microsoft should have bought this game instead to compete with Uncharted and fill it's uncharted size hole in it's library. http://youtu.be/BkvRgmjncME
Buy one. You seem to be good at that.
M$ doesn't want this, he's just being competitively polite. M$ has the Gears of War series, that's far more popular & sells more than Uncharted. He's only answering questions posed to him. Sony continues to capture the FPS genre to complete with Halo & fails hard all the time: Killzone & Resistance ring a bell...As "Halo Killers"? What a "Swing & A Miss" that was.
Holy shite you sound like a fanboy.
This article has nothing to do with sales or anything you just spewed out of nowhere but keep trying. Have fun in delusional land.
If dev's were smart they would look to fill that void with their new IP. Basically that market is bare, and there isn't much competition, especially on the XB1, it would be a safe bet at this point.
Can't get uncharted got tomb raider, that's what hero's do
This is what you do when you don't have a choice.
they have a choice, they could use all the money they spend on buying third party games and put it into a studio to make their own game, but I dont think that will happen any time soon.
Magoo is right. They should've invested in a talented team to create an exciting new action adventure IP. But that demands long term investment, something Xbox and MS wont do.
Hero's pay to keep multiplat games off of other systems? He's no hero. Just likes people to think he is. Sadly it's working.
It's easy to look like a hero when you've replaced complete and utter shitheads. If Microsoft is this software giant why do they have such a hard time creating there own software?
Today's TR is no UC, and neither one is as good as classic TR imo.
Completely disagree. Go back and play the original TR it's terrible.
I'll agree that controls and graphics have evolved since then, but that's about it. When UC came out I was hoping for an updated TR but that's not what it was. Then when the last TR came out I was hoping for an updated TR but that's not what it was either. Too much action. Not enough puzzles, and the puzzles in both games are stupidly simple. TR 1-4 > the most recent TR by a mile My mistake was that UC was never trying to be like old TR, but new TR still bears the name so it should at least try. Instead it's trying to be UC.
Yeah ok buddy, uc blows classic tr out of the water and into the moon, two different games in the same genre.
They aren't that much alike imo. I love UC, and it does what it does better than most similar games, but I'd rather it was more like classic TR. Modern TR does a bad UC impression as well as a bad TR impression.
In the long run more devs will come to MS, classic and non classic So in the long run, where that franchise goes and everything else, that'll be theirs to drive. But this was an interesting opportunity for us. So when they came to us with the opportunity to do something, absolutely it was something we looked at hard and it worked out, and I'm glad it did.
I'm sorry but Classic TR is on Xb360 and was done by silicon valley, they were great by design standards on PS1 and PS2... Lara in her current form is WAY WAY WAY MUCH BETTER, than that concrete killer from classic TR. That design philosophy and game mechanics don't stand today. TR>TR1-4 by a landslide . And Uncharted series TR. There's a reason why the IP was irrelevant for years till the reboot. Plainly put it was using archaic gameplay designs and silly pulp fiction tropes under shiny graphics and no one was buying it. This is why TR being timed exclusive to XBO was such a sting and a big deal because the rebooted IP ticked all the boxes of what's relevant to the genre in gaming today, deep story, great characters tha feel real, and better mechanics that aren't wild and crazy. Summersaults and crazy flips while shooting and getting shot simply isn't believable or fun in a modern action game selling believability.
@highlife. It's not terrible. It's just old. I played that game on the PS1 the day it came out and it blew my mind. Never had seen anything like it. I could not get enough of Tombraider. As for Uncharted. The Original was fantastic and still is, Uncharted 2 is as well. 3 was very good. MS are not interested in gaming. With the billions they have, They could have hired the best and had an Adventure game long ago. They just buy DLC, I couldn't give a shit about DLC on any platform. Even MP maps have got out of hand. Don't give out enough and then pump out the DLC.
Then make one.
he has stated that they are....
What interview where you reading.... Because that was not said at all.
No...he pretty much give the impression that they would rather buy third party games like Tomb Raider instead For a guy who is "all about the games", why is it he can't get a studio to make a game like Uncharted. With how much power he apparently has being the boss of the Xbox branch why can't he get a studio or even make a new one and say "You see Uncharted....make something better then that. I want an "Uncharted" game for the Xbox One to rival it"
The article indicated that they have tried but currently don't have one, so instead they buy Tomb Raider. It is likely that anything they release will just be compared to Uncharted anyway and won't be as good, so they canned it.
@Foxtrot, because he's a phony. It's just a persona that Microsoft told him to put on because they knew they had a perception issue. He was originally a big supporter of DRM and the X1's original mission. He can say it hurt him all he wants but if he really didn't like the direction of a product he was involved with he should have made his voice heard to his bosses, move to another area in the company, or find another job but he didn't and supported them.
They want something to compete with uc4 in 2015. They can't just make a game with that quality in one year.
They would rather waste money buying multiplats. They've been doing that all generation.
this is why people talk about better competition for Sony than what MS brings to the table. EVERYONE is in this business for the money but what sours gamers is that MS is in it SOLELY for the money and couldn't care one iota about dragging creativity and competition down. I will make an analogy to music and see if it catches on. You don't hire accountants to make music, you hire artists who love their craft.
Phil spencer is a man
I've often wondered about that.
Makes me think of this http://thephilter.com/wp-co...
"Phil spencer is a man" I certainly hope so. :)
How did you ever come to that conclusion?
You lie... :)
Breaking News… "Phil spencer is a man"
Personally he sounds and acts more like a PR robot. On topic: Purchasing TR as a timed exclusive doesn't help you obtain games like Uncharted or the TLOU. That is only done by partnering, creating or purchasing studios to create exclusive games for you. Purchasing timed exclusive rights to TROTR was a waste of money. It will have zero impact other than further dividing consumers. Consumers want true exclusives, new IPs and not timed deals or DLC. I really wish MS would get it together. This whole deal with Tomb Raider has me scratching my head wondering WTF they were thinking.
Lol the comments were awesome.funny bubbles for all
They all sound like robots, what do you expect they work for multibillion dollar corporate entities. Cerny to phil to anyone in between sound like this.
Hes no woman hes a man man baby. wait wrong quote
Or maybe he's man bear pig
Negative, he is a puppet for MS
And you come up with that how exactly?
Is he a man? Really? I'm not too sure about that.
That's cause you don't have the talent and waste money on useless timed exclusives that haven't gotten you no where.
He confirmed with his answer that the exclusivity deal was made to have a response for Uncharted. However, Uncharted could launch in May-June like The Last of Us, or in October/November like the other games. It might not be in direct competition anyways.
I think he meant that was one of the reason. Main reason he provides that SE came to them with this opportunity and they couldn't pass on it.
SE is stupid then. Crystal Dynamics copies Uncharted then goes to the system it sold the least on. Wooo, no wonder their finances are in the gutter.
Most likely, they were looking for security or additional funding and if UC4 releases on the same time as RoTR on PS4 UC4 would demolish it because it's an exclusive. Just speculating but it seems to me that the reason they went to MS with the offer was competition with UC4.
He explicit said ms did nothing special.. CD wanted a partner.. Ms wanted a game to compete with uc.. Sony doesn't want to partner on a uc competitor. Seems like the simple scenario
