An editorial exploring how the hiring of big Hollywood names, namely Guillermo Del Toro and Norman Reedus from Sony's Gamescom Silent Hill reveal, is hindering the future of video games as a creative medium.
This isn't anything new? It's good that certain geniuses and talented actors/actresses open up their windows by going into Video gaming. Del Toro is a genius and I can't wait to see what he and Kojima do with Silent Hill. They're both entertainment mediums...They should live together not apart.
I remember del toro made a game called insane ..and norman reedus is awesome .
I hate to disagree with everyone (not really) but this article is pure idiocy. While the overall premise put forth may at first seem to have some teeth, the article uses the recently released PT as its poster child for cause. And in that regard, the writer is so far in Errorsville, like your character in PT he is both leaving, approaching, and in the middle of being wrong all at the same time. Did this dummy even play PT? Here was a teaser announced by Jim Ryan and preceeded with very little fanfare. Why? The reality of playing PT is its own hype. It is a self sufficient hype machine and stands on the high quality of what it is rather than what the gaming press, developers, publishers, and hardware backers are telling you. Gaf, Giant Bomb, etc etc ad nauseum, even N4G are great examples of what the gaming public thought of the teaser and its promise and the tallied results reveal a resounding "Hell yes let me buy this great game now...as soon as I put on frest underwear." Look at the article just above this one entitled "I Couldn’t Finish The P.T Demo" http://n4g.com/news/1567430... If PT is the new example of the sort of quality Hollywood will bring to gaming then sign up the A listers. If ever an article appeared on this site with a hole in the writer's deduction, this submission from invisiblegamer is that piece. The writer also needs to stop pretending Hayter isn't part of Hollywood. Voicing Solid Snake is a side job for him. His main endeavor is as a screenplay writer and actor. Another erred deduction from invisiblegamer. And lets not forget one of Hollywood's very first forays into the gaming world, Medal of Honor created by Steven Spielberg. A series that many felt when downhill when he sold the property.
Ill admit I didn't read the article BUT Why wouldnt games use Hollywood when they've been using, copying, stealing and getting inspiration from Hollywood since forever. It doesn't always work but anybody who can't welcome such a union is the type that holds gaming back. Imagine uncharted 2 without Hollywood.
The struggle to finding interesting gaming journalism free from absurdity.
Too true. I think this is the biggest problem with gaming since last gen. Game journalists. They fuel hype and hysteria, and every college jouro feels because they have a blog or a web site, they are the indispensable source of gaming knowledge and opinion. Never mind the fact that half of them can't spell, and the other half only started gaming last gen
'Pseudo' journalists You're welcome ;)
Del Toro is brilliant!!! I simply love the Strain! Fabulous show, if we can expect anything like that in Silent Hills then I'll die happy!
There's always someone who tries to turn some really positive news into a negative. Kojima is brilliant. From what Ive seen of Del Toro (Pans Labrynth, Hellboy, maybe more? Recommend me some)he has a very unique style which I find disturbing yet terrific. Only seen Norman Reedus in TWD and I have to say he seems fitting. Ive wanted to see him in more TV shows, never thought of him in a game but its just as satisfying for me!
I recommend watching The Orphanage. Now that movie had some real horror throughout and an insanely mind boggling twist at the end.
Ooh I have seen that. I don't remember any of it though, ill watch it again!
Because the lack of Hollywood talent is what made the last few Silent Hill games such great games....
Team Silent is what made those games so great. We have no clue what how Silent Hills will turn out, but it's certainly unfair to make any claims about what will be "ruined" this early in it's development. Edit: You need to do a better job of conveying sarcasm. ;)
Im talking about all the ones AFTER Silent Hill 4. Also I was being sarcastic.
it has apoint especially with David hayter..at the start i thought it would be a nice change to bring a new voice actor like Sutherland... but new snake sucks, it has no relation at all with the awkyard ,funny and also macho nature of the old "hayter "snake
No it will not. /end
I think we've reached a new Level of absurdity
Sigh...this is sad. Gaming journalism got worse everyday :/
Worse? Sorry, I still remember the days in the Ps1,N64,Ps2,Xbox, and even some games of last gen where people would cry about the voice acting...even when it wasn't all that bad. Now we are at a point where we can get people who have been known for acting and you cry about it? Pick a side either enjoy the advancements gaming has made or bow out now and be a retro gamers forever.
For the first time in a very long time Silent Hill gets a breath of fresh air, returns to Japanese development, shows PROOF that they seem to be going back to the series cryptic psychological type of horror and overall the fans collectively rejoiced... and somehow this is Hollywood killing the industry. The typical hipster "hating on popular stuff is cool" type of mentality. You gotta love what passes for "journalism" nowadays.
I really just found this article to be the ramblings kf someone who is basically upset he recognizes the names and faces of actors in video games. Doesnt make much sense to me.
Invisiblegamer... I have never gone to the site and it is already on my invisible list. Good work on being useless.
So having actors who can act is making video games worse?
It's a way of restricted film directors to make their own unique experiences without the pressure's of the studio. But then again, Norman Reedus is not a very good actor so that's holding something back from a product.
Lets just hope del toro dosnt put in some nice moral story ending, has no place in silent hill.
There are some who believe that video games driven by a good story aren't as good as a game driven by mind-numbing, run & gun, and brain-dead hack & slash action games. Yes there are a few games with famous faces that are average, but most story - driven games I have played of late have been all 80/100 or better. Creativity, no matter what the source is, will always be beneficial to gaming, famous face or not.
