Interview: Xbox head Phil Spencer on Tomb Raider and One's digital future

The affable and energetic executive speaks with a contagious enthusiasm for all things gaming, with an engaging tone and refreshing transparency. You'll rarely see him refuse a question and his praise for the positives of the medium are sincere and liberal - even it means bigging up the competition.

Sure, after the deeply troubled launch of Xbox One, Spencer could probably send his dog into work most days and still be taking the division in an upwards direction, but it's difficult to feel too cynical about the positive changes he's made in recent months.

Following the Xbox Gamescom media briefing, we met with Spencer to discuss the Tomb Raider deal, the future of Kinect and Xbox's digital future.

Really great interview.
So glad this guy's the face of Xbox now.

HugoDrax1351d ago

Dammit N4G! stop the BS Disagrees. How is it that this man/woman has more disagrees than agrees for saying he is glad this guy is the face of XBOX? Seriously? Where is the GAMERS UNITY? stop the fight and let's UNITE :-)

chrisarsenalsavart1351d ago (Edited 1351d ago )

That s what I ve been saying from day 1.
That move has been the greatest MS has done in a long time.
Microsoft had a strong press conference imo,
Great bundles, strong multiplat showing, halo, [email protected]
Quantum break and sunset drive were my favourites.
The only thing I didn't like was that sneaky so called TR exclusivity(timed).
Great job Phil.

40 disagrees for what I said? But why?
I'd like to ask to those who disagreed with me as to why they disagreed.

Was it not a good interview with some solid info and answers?
Is Phil Spencer not a much better leader than Don Mattrick?

This guy is the perfect person to lead the xbox division. I love reading his interviews or listening to him whenever he is featurd in gaming podcasts.

From another interview after gamescom.

“Spencer knows that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will
continue to be compared. "We shipped at the same time
and we're in direct competition with the PS4," he
admits. "I'm not going to duck that. I want to win. I
want to win this generation, but I want to win more than
I want the other guy to lose. I own a PS4, and it's not
like I want it to get dusty or not have games. But I do
want to sell a lot of Xbox Ones, and for many people
that's a direct competition with the PS4. As the Xbox
team, we are the underdog."

Great words from the head of xbox.... The link to the full article is below rchive/2014/08/12/i-want-to-wi n -this-generation-says-xbox-bos s -phil-spencer.aspx

OpieWinston1351d ago

Why the disagrees?
Phil Spencer is the PERFECT guy to lead Xbox division.

christocolus1351d ago (Edited 1351d ago )

Lol...Ignore the ghosts hovering over this article.

.I really don't care what the naysayers think.. I believe Phils a great guy its something most in the xbox community will agree with and even developers and game journalists too. The guy is genuine.

@sdf repellant

Well its quite sad and i guess the haters are out of luck too.

user3672721351d ago (Edited 1351d ago )

The disagrees came from the fact that the haters were hoping for an exec that failed and make wrong decusions for the xbox brand so they can feel better for their console of choice. It is not too difficult to figure how things work around here.

-Foxtrot1351d ago (Edited 1351d ago )

You mean he's the ONLY guy to lead the Xbox divison

They didn't really have much of a choice, he's the only one who is known to us gamers that plays games himself

What were they going to do....hire another Don Mattrick

Microsoft made the best of a bad situation.

They needed someone people could trust again after the shit storm last year, getting the only guy at the company who plays games was the perfect fit.

Seriously though, even if it was a suit or a new guy entirely they would of done the same things they've done over the past few months with all the try and get back on top, not because it's Phil Spencer decision.

carlosjrix1351d ago

because you cant say anything positive about xbox one.. not here.. lol

Imalwaysright1351d ago

You heard it here 1st folks. Want to be the head of the Xbox division? Quit school and play as many games as you can as that is the only requirement needed. Of course that as the head of the Xbox division you guys wouldn't have any responsibilities and just would sit in your office doing nothing all day but on the bright side, you guys would have even more time to play games thus being even more qualified to be the head of the xbox division.

Godmars2901351d ago

"Microsoft made the best of a bad situation."

And again, for the nth time, its a situation they themselves created. It going to be a while until they recover, but manipulative actions - perhaps halfhearted ones at that - like with Tomb Raider isn't going to earn them back fans.

Likewise, the reason for the phantom disagrees is pretty simple: we've done this song and dance before.

MS - or Sony - does something wrong, makes some PR statement and gets praised simply for that. With again it being especially bad because Spencer, for all the good will talk, shafted every gamer with Tomb Raider. This is damage control concerning something which will likely happen again.

All that, or maybe christocolus just put up a bad, non-working, link...

XStation1351d ago

You talk about me having 1 bubble, but i truly believe you deserve 1. The only reason you have that many is because you praise Sony and everything they do.

Phil is a decent guy. He's a guy that worked his way up from being an intern to being an head executive. I think the thing that Phil brings to the table is that he will fight to bring exclusive IP's. I think in the next half decade even if MS is still losing in sales the division will be in fantastic shape for the next generation box. I think Phil will expand the studios, get the most out of the existing studios, and change the brand for the best. Thing I don't like about him is that he seems to want to be loved too much. There's no need to congratulate Sony on anything when they don't have the decency to congratulate you back. He's a nice guy, but he's way too nice for his own good imo.

HugoDrax1351d ago

"There's no need to congratulate Sony on anything when they don't have the decency to congratulate you back."

LUKE 6:31 "Do to others as you would have them do to you."

In other words, treat others the same way you want them to treat you. That's what being a decent human being is about :-)

kratoz12091351d ago

Sounds like your in love
I will find you a link for a Disney love song

christocolus1351d ago

and if i was ,why would it bother you?...huh Kratoz? why?. Lol.

christocolus1351d ago (Edited 1351d ago )

With phil in charge of the xbox division hopefully we will see more unique triple A titles on the scale of halo, scalebound, quantumbreak and gears,

Yes he is, and he is doing a wonder job with getting xbox on track, and driving. I am loving the content that is being provided for xb1 (and the afterlife support that the 360 is getting). Gamescom show was quite impressive for me from both ms/sony (I did some serious window shopping). Xbox current gamers, and future gamers have a lot to look forward to, and its a pleasure to acknowledge it. Game on.

equal_youth1351d ago

phil spenders always reminds me of sneaky bill compton in true blood. comes around as the hero but who knows what he's up to ^^but whatever better choice than don mattrick by all means. if they get their games right and finally learn after this tomb raider debacle that financing their own games is the best way to go.

Learn from what debacle? They paid for content on their system for their userbase and future userbase. Stop with horseshit. It's only a debacle from non Xbox one users who won't get to play it. Games are games. Doesn't matter if it's first party like Press play. Second party like Remedy. Or third party like what they're doing with Tomb Raider. I've said this before and I'll say this again. MS's obligation is to people like me who dished out 500 bucks for the system. I rest in bed at night knowing I'm getting blockbuster exclusives. Idc how they get them or in what way they get them. As long as I'm entertained. I expect the same thing when I get my PS4 in February. I want the best games in high quantities and I won't stand for anything less. Idc if they were multiplat turned exclusive, new ip, existing IP, ect. Doesn't matter to me.

n4rc1351d ago

But its not your game.. Where does this entitlement come from? You played a game.. Doesn't mean you're entitled to every future game

It wasn't taken from anyone.. It wasn't theirs to begin with.. Its being jointly developed by ms studios and CD.. And its still 15ish months away from release..

And I'll ask again for the hundredth time, maybe I'll get an answer..

Would it make everyone feel better if Microsoft announced they acquired CD altogether? Then you'd never see it.. And there's always some reason why its OK when another company does it

Don't mean to single you out or anything.. But I see a lot of this and decided to reply here..
