Some have written off The Wii U too soon. This editorial makes a case that Nintendo's console is not only worth your time but may be winning this new generation.
Senseless clickbait article. I should have known better after just reading the title. None of the points justify the conclusion. "The Wii U will not replace your Xbox One or Playstation 4 but it’s not supposed to. Nintendo is not trying to win the war this time around but in some ways they just might." And this right here is what you call being delusional. Nintendo most definitely tried to win this war. They thought they could strike gold a second time coming off the heels of the wii, hence the reason they released a year before their other two main competitors. Unfortunately for them it didn't work out too well (which was really all their fault). Not because they failed in their goal means we can just make up nonsensical excuses to cover up their obvious blunder. The wiiU is not winning anything. Right now and for the foreseeable future the ps4 is winning and by a huge margin at that. The WiiU is battling it out with the xbone for second place.
Wii U has more worthwhile games than PS4 and Xbone combined.
With the same rehashed franchises? Disagree all you want but Nintendo needs to put down Mario and Zelda already.
The WiiU has a ton of big name multiplats not coming out on it's system in the next 6 months. No Far Cry 4, Evolve, Destiny, Shadows of Mordor, The Crew, Lords of the Fallen, Dark Knight, Dying Light, Witcher 3, MGS V, DA Inquisition, Project Cars, COD Advanced Warfare, AC Unity, Evil Within, Alien: Isolation, etc...
Considering they've already been outsold by the PS4 and lost a massive amount of market share from the Wii, I honestly don't think they're winning in any sense. Sure they might have more games available, but that's because they came out a year before. In a couple of years, that advantage will be completely gone.
Kenshiro, compare zelda NES to zelda WiiU Compare mario 1 to super mario galaxy Even super mario galaxy to super mario 3d world is a completely different experience Splatoon, xenoblade, pushmo, bayonetta, Hyrule warriors, captain toad. Nintendo is always delivering fresh experiences yet they always get hate for it
Fast forward a year and repeat that statement if you can.
@kenshiro100 If they continue to sell high numbers why would they do that? It's not like that's all the Wii-U has, there is several good games unrelated to them.
I'm the real winner with all three consoles. Wii U>PS4>X1
Well, this article asks for fanboy war^^ I love my Wii U, but I wouldnt say that :) You see, I dont own a PS4 or Xbox1, but a Wii U. But I own a pretty good PC. This is why the Wii U is the best as secondary device. If you have a PC, no need for PS4 or Xbox1, if you have a PS4, no need for a gaming PC or Xbox1, if you have a Xbox1, no need for a PS4 or PC. If you think about getting a secondary device, it is only logical to chose the one, which offers most of what you cant get anywhere else. 3rd Parties is what you get anywhere, but the Wii U, so why get a PS4, if you already have a PC? For 1 game? No. At the end of the day, the biggest variety of exclusive games and big titles you wont see anywhere else, is Nintendos plattform. Best 1st Party. This is why it makes the best secondary device. So if you think about it, if everybody would get a Wii U as secondary device, it would still sell more than any of the primal devices. At the end of the day this means winning. But I know this wont happen, so whatever :)
@Chrischi1988 Your logic is correct, but shouldn't the Wii U be the primary device? Because the other devices are for 3rd party games.
@TheWackyMan - No, it doesn't. Unless you're a diehard Nintendo fan (a dying breed these days), Wii U offers very little for the money. The console itself is woefully underpowered and lacking in even the most common features (internal HDD and Ethernet port, to name two, but there are many more). The game selection is poor, unless you like Nintendo first party rehashes. The Wii U is probably the worst console to release in the last 20 years, a system completely based on a distracting gimmick that no one wants.
"Wii U has more worthwhile games than PS4 and Xbone combined." If that's true for you then that's great, but if people agreed then WiiU would be selling much better. I personally have no interest in Nintendo exclusives.
@ken Sigh, Wonderful 101, zombiU, bayonetta 2, Pikmen 3, Monster Hunter 3U. That's about 4 more games than can be found on ps4/xboxone that both cannot be found anywhere else and also are not based on zelda or mario. Meanwhile there have been 7 God of war titles since 2005, 7 Call of Duty titles since 2008, 7 halo games since 2001, 6 assassins creed games since 2007. Who's milking their franchises again?
@Shnazzyone Look at this list of games containing Mario: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... If you still think other companies milk their franchises more than Nintendo after reading it I will be shocked...
@paul Yeah, he's a character who's been around for over 30 years and is nintendo's primary mascot. How many of those games were actually bad? That's the real question. With the exception of phillips cd-i and some of the edutainment games. Meanwhile, all those franchises I mentioned have at least 1 black sheep. Regardless of how much they use mario, they make sure the games he's in these days are good games. That's honestly all that matters. So, get over it. They're nintendo. They're gonna make games with mario in them. As long as their good games, who cares.
Are those new IPs? I'm talking about new IPs.
I appreciate your opinions.
Nintendo confused their primary market of soccer moms, retirement homes, and pre teens, with the launch if the wii u. The retarded iPad of a controller I imagine turned a lot of people away, i think they felt overwhelmed by it.
Nintendo didn't confuse nobody but people called themselves gamers. Who made articles on whether or not wii u is an add-on or a new system. Casual dont surf the web for the newest gaming goods unless they are morphing into one.
Is this comment even in English?? OT: no doubt Nintendo has some great games on the Wii U, but the lack of third party support makes it unappealing to a lot of gamers.
The only thing the wiiU is winning is the race to the grave.
You played Zombie U?
You know that Wii U hardware has been selling the same and sometimes more than XB1 since Mario Kart came out right? :/
Exactly, the one year headstart helped nintendo to have a larger install base and now not even the price cut was enough to make the Xbox1 sell more than the Wii U. The one who is actually in trouble now, is the Xbox1. You dont have to believe that, but it is a fact, numbers dont lie, only the numbers itself could be wrong^^
+1 for funny! Even though not many folks around here will see the humor ;)
People thing the WiiU will get second place against the Xbox One. Yet how I see the Wii vs 360 go. The Wii was dead 3 years ago while the 360 is still going on with many games. I see the same scenario with the WiiU vs One. Even worse, what big seller the WiiU will have in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018? Only Zelda?
X1 will surpass wiiU sales by end of year.
Not if Smash has anything to say about it. (I really don't know. I don't keep track of sale numbers)
Said no one ever. Wii U is still outselling the XB1 and Wii U has several games that have already shown they will sell units between now and the end of the year. XB1 has Master Chief Collection. That will sell consoles but not as much as Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta, and Super Smash will. XB1 is almost 2 million units behind Wii U. They might outsell the Wii U if not a single Wii U sold between now and christmas but with a ton of people waiting until the holidays to buy Mario Kart 8 it will never happen especially since the XB1 still has hardly any games and is 100 bucks more. Keep dreaming buddy
It is not only 100 bucks more, it doesnt even come with a game, people always forget that. With 400 bucks, you cant do anything with your Xbox1, other than surf the web in an inferior way, than the Wii U. Nintendo has by far the most first party franchises. What does MS have against that? You say only Zelda, this just shows, what a big fanboy you must be. And you also forget, that the Wii sold so much, without a big price cut, during it first few years. Xbox360 still sells, true, but for what money, what does MS actually earn to sell a cheap console, that doesnt make any money for them? Nintendo has big bank accounts, which almost only come from their consoles, so they mustve done something right the past years, how much money did MS make on their consoles? What are sales numbers, if you still dont make any money with them?
This year remaining we have Hyrule Zelda, Bayonetta, Smash. Next year an open world Zelda, Devil's Third and looks like Star Fox.
Xenoblade X also, next year, as well as Devils Third.
@Chevalier: Nintendo also has Captain Toad this year as well. Yoshis's Wolly World, Kirby's Rainbow Curse, Mario Maker, Splatoon, maybe Fatal Frame 5 next year, Star Fox U, Xenoblade X, New Zelda, Devil's Third, plus whatever Nintendo announces next E3 for the end of the year. To me Nintendo still has the best ammount of exclusives in the foreseeable future. Sony and microsoft have something like two or three NEW not remastered exclusives next year. That's not very many reasons to run out and buy an Xbox One or PS4 (IMO). (EDIT): Forgot Splatoon is a 2015 tittle as well.
It's certainly winning at collecting the most dust of any of the consoles.
Wrong! Has sold more than XB1 and I own all three and play my Wii U daily. I turn my others on just to get my free stuff and then turn them off. They are the consoles collecting dust. Not the Wii U. 2 million more out than XB1 and it picking up steam.
What does sales have to do with whether a console has games or get's played or not?
It's a great system! Improving everytime. Gaming Only as well. Which it should be and not multimedia heavy. Wii U haters won't like this author "opinion". As it is an "opinion piece"
Good, simple console with a fun and mostly exclusive lineup. Let's just say it MAY sell better than some people expect.
Finally, a sensible comment. Bubble up for well said.
Not really. It's looking like it'll struggle to match the Gamecube's 22 million. If it's lucky, it might hit the N64's 33 million.
As far as business goes Wiiu is not winning, but as far as quality titles wiiu does have the highest rated retail exclusives right now and with Bayo2, smash bros, xenoblade chronicles X, Zelda wiiu, splatoon, and yoshi's wooly world right around the corner that figure isn't likely to change anytime soon. That's not even counting games that can end up being good like devil's third. Of course it's all subjective . Once those big third party titles start releasing my PC will probably get more love though.
Pretty one-sided text, and I think the external USB drive-argument is pretty indicative for the reasoning in the article. Yes, Wii U is the only console that allows for USB storage, but it's also the only console shipped with as little as 32gb of memory. I'd rather have a console with an actual HDD. Also, the "everyone loves Nintendo games" and "Wii U is doing well again" arguments don't hold that much water. Get some data. I mean, intuitively I would agree - Nintendo games tend to make sense for everyone and Wii U has seen a sales boost, but right now the games aren't being embraced by everyone, and the console still isn't performing anywhere near what one would expect from the Wii, PS4 or even the Xbox One at that point in its life cycle. Case and point: What annoys me is that the article all boils down to an opinion, and while I agree: The Wii U is a good console and sales are better (than its previous performance), but so what? The content doesn't justify the title.
I agree. It's basically a clickbait article meant to get a rise out of anyone who doesn't like the console. There are no facts to back up the statement of Wii U is winning. I love the thing and it is doing a heck of a lot better but it's not out of the woods yet.
The title is essentially a giant "shots fired!" Meme....
I'll be honest I bashed the Wii u for the first year it was out but I gotta admit I'm impressed with Wii u now. I'm glad they are doing better. Every system should do well I think.
I highly doubt the Wii U is gonna get first place this gen, but right now, they're the only console with a worthwhile 2014 lineup that only they possess. They have their own identity that they don't share with any other system. You don't buy a system over another to play multi-platform games. You buy it for exclusives. Nintendo has that secured in spades.
You would absolutely buy a Xb1 or a PS4 over a Wii u if you have interest in multi plat games - Multi plats sell both xbox and playstation . Multi plats are one of the biggest reasons people decide not to buy a Wii u I only own a wiiu and had hopes based on thier promise of more 3rd party games this generation that we would have a better selection this time around - there are many high 3rd party games my household will miss out on because they will not be coming to the Wii u - Nintendo has done close to nothing to back up thier promise of more 3rd party games and now the Wii u will probably have less quality 3rd party games than any precious Nintendo system I know many Nintenso fans like to act as of only exclusives matter but that is simply not true particularly for platform that is getting close to zero 3rd party titles ( unless you want to start counting eshop games like The Letter)
Yes, but would you buy a PS4 AND an Xbox One? No, you wouldn't, because you'd be getting a library composed extensively of games they share: multi-platform games. That means that you'd buy ONE of those consoles (or better yet, a PC). If you buy a PS4 for multi-platform games like you say, you would have zero reason to buy an Xbox One. All those multi-platform games you just got on PS4 no longer become a selling-point for an Xbox One. As a result, the only way to justify buying an Xbox One after that is exclusives (like I said). Also, what about all those cross-gen games, games that you can get on the consoles you already have? Doesn't that make the next-gen console purchase even less meaningful? See, that's the nature of buying a console for multi-platform games: it invalidates the appeal of the other consoles and makes buying them a redundant waste of money. That's where the Wii U's edge lies: even if you own a PC or the other two consoles, the Wii U still has appeal, because its identity is its own. It still has content only it has. Purchasing it is still worthwhile, even in the same home as another system. You don't feel like you're buying the same console twice. Everyone knows that the Wii U won't be getting those games like Destiny or Far Cry 4, but everyone also knows that all those Wii U exclusives will never come to PS4 or Xbox One. So if you want to play Smash Bros. or Bayonetta 2, you gotta buy a Wii U. That's the deal.
LOL Wii U has already failed, it isn't "winning" anything. It's a shame Nintendo bet everything on a bad gimmick (once again), instead of designing a solid console; but they only have themselves to blame. The bulky, awkward, distracting gamepad doesn't make up for the poorly-designed, feature-lacking console. The Age of Gimmicks has (thankfully) come to an end.
Outselling XB1 every month and outselling PS4 in Japan and has 4 to 5 times more games than both combined. Has more exclusives and over 100 indies coming out in the next year. So your comment is dead wrong. No discussing it.
The Wii u outsold the xb1 (by a very slim margin) for 2 months after it's biggest system seller was released- that does not translate to "every month" - Otherwise the xbox has outsold the Wii u since it's release including this year
I'm not a XBox fan, but will admit, XBox One will eventually outsell Wii U, like it or not, Wii U is enjoying its early mometum, but it'll be for a short period time, temporary, so they better concentrate on their 3DS business instead, because like Gamecube, they're not going anywhere with Wii U, obviously, XBox isn't doing as good as PS4 at the moment, but definitely doing a lot better than Wii U, sorry.
Move,Touchpad,Morpheus.. gimmicks are alive and well! Consoles are delivery systems for software and Nintendo has an excellent attach rate.. $$ I would like more 3rd party titles but realize that 3rd party makes the most money on 3rd party titles.. Imagine when Pokemon Amiibo drops $$$ Oh, and try TYPING YOUR POST ON A PS4.Then consider what real next gen innovation is..
@ marloc_x - The difference is, those "gimmicks" aren't REQUIRED, they are not FORCED onto you like Nintendo's poorly thought out stuff. Don't want to use the bulky gamepad to play games? Tough luck, you have to!
Lol..don't be a dope schiller. I can choose from three controllers for my games and SSB is adding a fourth. Wii U is NOT the console forcing a control scheme on you..
So did the Wiiu start coming with a bottle of tiger blood, because that's the only way it could be winning right now.
That would make it bi-winning!
"The Wii U supports a remote play function similar to what Sony offers with The PS4 but without the need to buy any extra hardware." No it doesn't. The amount "off TV play" compatible games is tiny. Can anyone name a game that doesn't work with remote play on Vita? Also you can remote play further away form your console. Two very big reasons why they are not similar. " How’s that for giving the people what they want?" The PS4 let's you put in a hard drive so what's your point?
It allows you to play games at a distance on a smaller screen, in that sense it is a similar feature. Actually a lot of games do. Every game on the virtual console and all of the wii's 1000+ titles are streamable to the gamepad, in addition to every wii u game that is, too. That's more than what's playable on remote play. They both have their perks, the remote play obviously has greater range and the wii u has better framerate. Remote play is more convenient and off-tv play costs almost half as much to do.
Re the Wii games don t we still have to use the Wii mote, point it at the game pad Etc like it is a tv as appossed to using the gamepad controls? I love off tv play but having to use an external controller w the game pad for Wii games is a no go for me- OR did they fix that and I missed? I hope they have or do fix it otherwise there may as well not be off tv play for Wii games
don't forget the Gamepad has a larger screen and triggers.
@Dunban No they didn't fix it. I dont mind it though. I play super mario RPG with the gamepad in its stand.
But not all games can do it... Where as all PS4 games can..... End
You can't compare with the Vita here, because that implies that most people have Vitas...and based on sales, they don't. Besides, if they do, that's another $200 out of pocket for a remote play device. That means that in order to do remote play on Vita, you need to pay $400 for the PS4 and another $200 for the Vita. That's $600 just for remote play. "The PS4 let's you put in a hard drive so what's your point?" So does the Wii U. In fact, external hard drive support is common for all kinds of consoles/devices. What's your point?
Just for remote play? You do know the Vita is its own device. HTH
"You do know the Vita is its own device." Have you seen the Vita marketing? Sony isn't treating it like its own device. They keep selling the device as a remote play device, without pushing any original software for the thing. Vita support has tanked considerably since launch and Sony has essentially chained the device to the PS4. It's not its own device anymore; it's a companion device. You're buying the thing for remote play. That's another 200 bucks, man. At least Wii U's "remote play device" comes with the system.
It's not its own device anymore; it's a companion device. I use my to play Vita games more than I do remote play. So just because the marketing has changed, does not change the basic function of the device. "Almost every single game on Wii U has Off-TV Play. What is tiny is the quantity of games that don't have this feature." Facts to back this up please.
