Sunset Overdrive Interview: Insomniac Games Talks Xbox One Exclusivity, Mature Themes, and More

GR: The fine folks over at Insomniac Games were kind enough to pull themselves away from their work on Sunset Overdrive to answer a few of our questions about its upcoming Xbox One exclusive. We pressed them for information on their decision to develop a game exclusively for Xbox One, the inspiration behind Sunset Overdrive's wacky and colorful world, what it was like making their first next-gen title, and much more!

First it was because Microsoft let them own their IP. Now it's because Xbox Live is better for their online portion of the game. Make up your minds already.

It's the first reason. The other reason is PR after all servers require money which in their words wasn't the reason for the deal in the first place.

Servers are a benefit of the deal not the main reason for the deal they have told us as much before.

Edit -

Marcus Smith - Sunset overdrive co-creator

Before -

"It was really important to [Insomniac CEO] Ted [Price] that we own the IP, so some of the conversations broke down over that," he said. "With Microsoft, they just came in very energetic and excited to work with Insomniac, period. And we'd heard some really good things about them and some resources that they would be allowing us to have."

"Most publisher conversations begin and end with IP ownership," Murray said candidly, "and I think [Microsoft] has been talking to Ted for a while, and at some point it was like, 'you can retain the IP,' and suddenly, it was a conversation point."

insomniac is a very talented studio. I have always wondered what they could do on other platforms. Now we see they can make a very unique twist on the run and gun element.

I wouldnt be surprised to see them even dabble with something original on the Wii-U. A great studio shouldnt be kept caged by one publisher. they should be given the freedom to explore new platforms to hone their skills and be a diverse studio able to create content for pretty much any platform they feel it fits best.

At some point i hope Sony lets the 'dog' off its leash as well. That's another great studio that is capable of doing some impressive things with other platforms if they so desire.

I would like to see Insomniac maybe pick up the resistance series one more time on the PS4 to see what they can really push out of it.

colonel1791261d ago (Edited 1261d ago )

Naughty Dog is owned by Sony. There's no letting the 'dog off its leash" ever.

Resistance became mediocre. It had a great potential, but I think they ruined it with Resistance 2, specially the ending.

@colonel, are you suggesting that ND couldnt pull a Bungie and go their own way?

By no means am i comparing what bungie did to get their freedom from MS to that of Sony. But if ND wanted to make a game for another platform, they should be allowed to do so regardless of who owns them.

It actually would make the owner even more $$ from licensing out the talent. I have read where there were some really creative ideas for games that never made it past the pitching process because the parent company wasnt interested. and yet those games could have been a fit for another platform if given the opportunity.

It's okay to still have in the contract "first dibs" but if they pass on the idea and another platform wants in...why not still make a few $$ in the process. That is how pet projects get started and grow into something bigger.

they can't have more than one reason?

the main reason is money if i had to guess, like every other 3rd party exclusive. we'll never hear them say that though.

AngelicIceDiamond1261d ago

Maybe its both.

They let them own the Ip and because of XBL service.

ScorpiusX1261d ago

Why one or the other , why not both .

CYCLEGAMER1261d ago (Edited 1261d ago )

My thing is...why does Insomniac keep having to explain themselves?? If they worked out a deal with MS that works for them and their studio, then so be it.

No one (journalist)is harrasing Bungie about going multiplate or having exclusive content on the Ps4. They too (bungie) have a long history of exclusively supporting one console.

Correct, you will never hear ANY company say that "its about the money", because it is very unprofessional

Money money money, why he explains again and again are people calling u a traitor Ted, resistance 123 amazin loved em, the game sunset won't sell x box

LordMaim1261d ago

It was money, but he didn't betray anyone. Companies have the right to make their own deals, come what may.

Dread1261d ago (Edited 1261d ago )

I bet that in your sony dominated mind you would not consider Bungie to be traitors for going multi-plat right?

only those that leave sony are traitors right?

or are u saying that any company that makes an exclusive game and later decides to make games for other consoiles are all traitors?

Shinox1261d ago (Edited 1261d ago )

Sunset Overdrive is an exclusive
Destiny isn't so your logic is failed when it comes to betrayal situation , a trivial small content isn't comparable to a whole new game so tell me how's that feels for your M$ money-hatting mind

Wedge191261d ago

How long before Insomniac cracks and this comes to PS platforms?

GordonKnight1261d ago

I don't believe it will, but some people think the next one will.

Wii U>PS4>X1
