N-Europe: De Blob (Wii) Review

N-Europe.com's Nathan Whincup writes:

"The real treat and joys you'll receive from the game comes from just trying to paint absolutely everything you can – there's something quite therapeutic and soothing about just going about and doing things your own way rather than being forced to stick to a certain schedule in Graydia.

This is evident in the 'reward' you receive for painting everything you possibly can – music. Whenever you splodge a building with your rebellious spectrum of paint, a burst of jazz emerges from your speakers. (Nice.) This phenomenon is known as musical synesthesia (thank you Wikipedia) and is related to the association of colours with music. Whack a certain colour on buildings, you'll get a certain sound. Switch colours and unleash your inner Neil Buchanan to experience a different melody – the music gradually builds up with more instrumental depth as you help to restore towns to their former glory, and you'll eventually have a wonderfully funky orchestra which is a treat to listen to."

Infinite Bits: Evolution of a Blob

Heather of Infinite Bits tracks The Blob, from 1958 movie to Dutch student project to Wii game.

"Perhaps the biggest difference I found in comparing the two incarnations of the game is the motivation of the Blobs. In de Blob, the Blob must save the citizens of Chroma City.

The Blob (original game), on the other hand, takes a lot of inspiration from the classic 1958 horror movie of the same name. In this game he's absorbing people, rather than saving them. I think the original blob is a bad guy. And I like that; I so rarely get to be the bad guy..."

The Blob PC is free

THQ has just released its bizarre yet quirky new blob rolling game, De Blob, on Wii. That costs £35. But you can get it for free... on PC.

Or at least, you can get 'The Blob' for free, and it looks damn near identical.

Lame
The Demo they speak of came out a year or two ago and even the pics they have clearly show it is not the same game as they claim. someone just didnt do their job when writing this article.

This doesn't surprise me as the PC title was developed as a sort of demo long ago. THQ picked up the rights to the game...and it has Wii waggle...so therefore its full price. Since the Wii doesn't have demos you could use the free-pc version to see if you like the core concept of the game b4 you buy it on the Wii.

While using the PC version as a demo is a good idea, I hope that people don't stay away from the Wii version because they think the PC one is the exact same.

Developers are already having enough trouble making good 3rd party Wii games... without sales there is no incentive to do so.

No this isn't a small game, it's a full-fledged wii game, different from the PC freeware game. The team who created the PC version went to develop the Wii version. Do you think a game that's also on PC(for free) would be getting scores like 8 and above?

Cheeseknight285679d ago

Ever heard of N+? A freeware PC flash game that's on 360, DS, and PSP? That *gasp* got scores of 8 and up from reviewers!?

Stickguy2595680d ago

Guy care to mention that "The Blob" is only one stage, while "De Blob" is a full game?

Me thinks he doesn't know what he's talking about...

Nothing new. Every extend, N, Grid Wars etc. are all freeware games which got their pricey ports to consoles. Which begs the question when will they port Warning Forever, RRootAge and Jump'n'Run which are all even better then those mentioned.
