Did the PlayStation 3 Play 'Catch Up' to the Xbox 360

It may be safe to say that Sony has ambitious plans with the PlayStation 3 in 2006. Priced at $599, this was supposed to be the ‘next-gen’ high-definition upgrade to the PlayStation 2. However, in its first few years, the Cell-powered black beauty had to endure quite a few growing pains. Most of those growing pains were healed by following suit of rival Microsoft’s strategy with the Xbox 360.

The PlayStation 3 is the best console of last generation "in my opinion." MGS4, Uncharted Trilogy, TLoU, Ni No Kuni, Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, God of War III, etc. It just had the most diverse line-up of exclusives in addition to the awesome multi-plats. While it did play catch up in the beginning, the end result was amazing.

Ezz20131142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

TBH ps3 was playing a catch up to xbox in it first 2 years but since then it has been the other way around

there first party alone was the main reason why i got Ps3 and will be the main reason why i will get Ps4

MrSwankSinatra1142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

MGS4 was the reason I bought a PS3, that was the game that literally everyday I was looking at the pre-release trailers for.

XisThatKid1142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

ALl in all in WW sales at least it did I believe, right? thought it was somewhere round 80+ mill both with a couple hundred thou diff.

Exclusives are what won the war. I find it hard to believe nobody has mentioned what I consider to be Sony's best game last gen....Journey! I've played the hell out of that game and still go back for more. A true masterpiece

Caffo011142d ago

No, the ps3 outsold the 360 yearly since its release. . The 360 was king in US but not in worldwide sales, and finally the ps3 surpassed it a few years ago despite releasing a full year later.

also PS3 cater to more taste, 360 had promising start with various genre and niche game but later on became dudebro console while PS3 maintaining their commitment to less profitable genre.

avengers19781142d ago

They playstation not only caught the 360, but surpassed it in sales... In terms of quality well the PS3 included wifi, Bluetooth, a 60 gig HDD, and blu-ray from the start, the original 360 had no HDD or a 20 gig HDD, no wifi( but you could buy an adaptor) no Bluetooth, no blu-ray(but you could buy a HD-DVD player, witch turned out to be a waste of money)

AceBlazer131142d ago

Surprisingly launching a year later has that effect. At least they surpassed it. The ps3 was the much better console of the 2, some say the 360 was cheaper but it was a rip off from jump street after you had to buy all the attachments for a early 360 to have the features of a ps3.

I want a PS3 just for all the Uncharted games + the RPG's already released and the ones still to release.

It's pumping out games and going out with a bang really.

I don't want to spend $200 on a PS3 when I can get a PS4 though, but at the same time, there are far more games for PS3 I want to play right now.

Everywhere but the U.S.. And then that was only for the first few years because the 360 launched a year before.

Sy_Wolf1142d ago

It did amazingly all things considered. It's almost tied with the 360 in sales with a year less time on the market.

WeAreLegion1142d ago

It surpassed the 360 awhile ago.

Sy_Wolf1142d ago

I never said it didn't sell more, I said it's almost tied with the 360 in sales.

HeWhoWalks1142d ago

Your wording is pretty confusing. When someone says "X" is almost tied with "y", the former is generally catching up, not ahead already.

OT: It did until it passed the 360 WW. For me, I enjoyed both machines nearly equally, very different from this gen, where the PS4 has all of my attention aside from PC.

Sy_Wolf1141d ago

Yeah, you're right, my bad. I have a sleep disorder and when I wrote that I'd been awake for 2 days.

CertifiedGamer1142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

Well Xbox 360 had a big head start that caused them to win in US but their failure rate left such a bad taste in fans mouth that caused fans to jump ship to the PS4. Last few Xbox 360 years also became about the casual gamer and Sony regardless of their over priced console never abandoned their main fanbase. 360 helped put a bad rep on Xbox One before it was even released.

Godmars2901142d ago

No one, and I mean no one, has ever mentioned RRoD as reason why anyone moved from XB1 to PS4.

MysticStrummer1142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

That's not exactly true.

Several of my friends who bought 360s decided against XB1 before it was ever revealed because of their experience with RRoD. One said he will never buy another MS console. I've posted that little anecdote more than once here. I don't know how many people felt that way, but I tend to think if I heard it from more than one friend then others out there felt the same.

Godmars2901142d ago

I meant that there haven't been any articles about it. No real criticizing or questioning that either MS, or Sony, might suffer some early manufacturing issue. Cut some corner they didn't or shouldn't have.

Jury1142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

It played catch up and then it played over-take.

The best games/exclusives were on ps3. Source: meta critic

Vegamyster1142d ago

The highest rated game last gen on Metacritic was GTA4, do you agree that it was the best game of last gen?

warczar1142d ago

I'll answer for him, NO. And that's a great point.

DVS-Zev1142d ago

^ It's not a great point actually.Cherry picking the exception doesn't make it a rule.Every other high rated game on Metacritic is there deservedly.

Even GTAIV.People bitch and complain about it now, in hindsight, because it went for a more serious tone then the wacky antics of SA but i'll be damned if you straight up lie to me now and say you didn't think the game was incredible when you first played it.

Vegamyster1142d ago (Edited 1142d ago )

@DVS-Zev

Ever since Jeff Gerstmann was fired for giving a heavily advertised game a weak score (Kane & Lynch) i don't know why you think Critics truly mean anything which is why i don't like the idea of using Metacritic as a measure of quality.

I never said it was a bad game but a 98%? Come on now lol. Games like Skryim on the PS3 (92%) shouldn't even be in the 90's because of how broken it was even after a year and same goes for others like MW2 (94%) or Street Fighter 4 (94%) and the recent GTAV (97%) because of its performance issues and broken online at launch. Again not to say they're bad but they have issues that critics tend to ignore, all you have to do is look at the user reviews for comparison.

coolbeans1142d ago (Edited 1141d ago )

^@DVS

Considering the modern example GTAIV represented when it comes to game reviews from critics last gen, it's actually a great point.

"Cherry picking the exception doesn't make it a rule.Every other high rated game on Metacritic is there deservedly."

-FFXIII being one of the more upper-tier JRPG's according to critics (83 meta for PS3)
-A lot of Call of Duty's scores

These are just some of the complaints I've seen people also use to argue against critics and how they evaluate quality in games. While I don't want to act as though this should stomp a reviewer's opinion as useless, there really hasn't been such a collective outcry against a generation of reviewers quite like what was witnessed for 7th gen games. At times, they felt more like hype validators than anything else.

And I vehemently disagree with your quoted statement above (if that wasn't obvious :P).

"...but i'll be damned if you straight up lie to me now and say you didn't think the game was incredible when you first played it."

Saying this is a lie if you want, but I didn't think that of it. Sure, it kept the standard of having a great amount of content (especially soundtrack) and a plethora of MP modes, but there's apparent problems with its design. I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it, though.
