Games Need to be Cheaper

Armed Gamer: AAA games are far too expensive these days, and that could seriously hurt the industry. I’m not talking about cost to the consumer, mind you, though if things continue the way they are, we might soon see a much higher cost to games. Instead, games are too expensive to make, especially in the AAA industry. We are seeing “blockbuster” titles that absolutely require unrealistic sales in order to achieve profitability, and this had led to some developers closing doors, and each time we risk seeing even more doors shut in the future.

It's true. Overblown overheads and ridiculously huge marketing budgets are some reasons. Interestingly most alleged aaa games don't even live up in terms of quality and/or content. Not to mention that we hardly see any unique games (mostly just shooters of some sort) That is why I have high hopes in some of the crowd funding stuff. Most noteworthy Star Citizen.

So far it looks as if this game is going to push the boundaries of what can be done in a game in nearly every way, and that with a fraction of the budget of a big publisher game of similar scope.

Budgets need to get smaller but at the same time that is just a natural consequence of how much the industry has grown in recent years. It is following a very similar model to how the film industry works. Massively inflated budgets for big blockbuster titles. Though what needs to happen is, and this requires faith from everyone involved, to reduce the rrp price. $60 isn't good as consumers are struggling to justify buying risks. Prices need to take a $10-$20.

wow l hate you so much with your 60 dollar game, lol

100 dolalrs here in australia, l'll never get used to hearing ppl say the american prices and saying it's too much :/

and l agree, the prices need to go down and budjets cut a bit, l'm an animator ffs and l agree, we might see the gaming industry take more risks cause of them

Also there really needs to be a ban on only multiplayer games going full price, eg, titanfall, evolve. like honestly l'm not forking out 100 dollars to play a game that's got a handfull of maps and is completly reliant on other people playing with me. Primal carnage was an epic multiplayer and it cost 5 bucks.

That was a decent read, the industry is over pressured with greed and consistently growing expectations from the consumer. It is very rare I will buy a game at launch, the prices are just too high these days.

With games like Battlefield Id much rather way till its half price and buy the DLC that would bring the cost up to or near the launch price. With more patience you get better value for your money.

Perhaps its my sort of mentality that is impacting the market, who knows...

I'm switching to PC gaming because console gaming is becoming too expensive, new AAA games cost half the price on PC as they do on PS4/Xbox One.

Imalwaysright693d ago

And the price of PC games goes down much faster too. Saying that PC gaming is more expensive than console gaming is a fallacy.

styferion692d ago

so true, also with the steam sales and humble bundles that periodically happens the game price on PC is seriously cheap compared to consoles.

50 dollars for a complete game just like the good days of gaming. Stop taking out shit from the game to charge us more money. If that's the case then games need to be 40 dollars.

No they don't. Games' prices have been going way down relative to inflation for a long time. You like those huge AAA experiences without having to sell your soul to an endless subscription, you have to pay for it up front. Let's get real here.
