Bioware Dev: The Witcher Is Badass, Can Coexist With Dragon Age As They're Different Styles

Bioware's Mike Laidlaw honestly proclaims that The Witcher is badass, adding that it's good to have RPGs as different as The Witcher & Dragon Age.

They are a bit different, but I'm still worried one of their sales might suffer, and I don't them too, I really like both of them. They both look amazing.

Alexious3548d ago

Well, with three months of space between one and the other, I don't think that will be a problem

Bigpappy3548d ago (Edited 3548d ago )

They really are very different: DA is very team focused and there is a lot more management involved. Witcher usually does better with the one melee gameplay and the Graphics. DA also has more complex stories (Not saying better). Complexed because of all the people on your team that you are having to please and having to make the choice of what is more important to you. The Witcher does have some twist, but had been very story driven and linear.

henr0s3548d ago

Have you even played a Witcher game? The story is easily 100x deeper and more complex then Dragon Age. Dragon Age 2 is an entire joke of a bad game. The Witcher 2 on the other hand is one of the most interesting and mature rpg's that is currently out. Anybody who buys DA:I is supporting the shoehorning of LGBTQ into video games instead of actual interesting characters. You are the cancer killing the industry.

--Onilink--3548d ago

you have definitely never played a Wticher game. No one that has would call the Witcher a linear game. There are dozens of choices (real morally grey choices, not your typical good or bad) that shape the story and the ending that you get

camel_toad3548d ago

I really think if you're an rpg fan youre not likely to ever pass up on any of the good ones, no matter how close their launches may be.

700p3548d ago

Ill be getting dragon age since im a huge DA fan. BUT i may check out witcher 3 since i previously bought witcher 2 in the past and i loved it.

jegheist20143548d ago

lol exactly my sentiments exactly i aint heard anyone use word bejesus in long time made me laugh from it so i gave u bubble

Darkstares3548d ago

There isn't enough good RPG's being made, bring 'em on I say.

Aurenar3548d ago

I feel the smell of poop from here. Poor BioWare. They are slightly scared.

Alexious3548d ago

Now now, let's not exaggerate. Both are going to be great!

gamerfan09093548d ago

Why would they be scared of an RPG that comes out months after they do?

ccgr3548d ago

Curious how it'll turn out

TheUltimateGamer3548d ago

Wow... Wish more companies would take this outlook. Glad they appreciate the competition.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave12d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan12d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

BioWare Could be Working on More than Just Dragon Age Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4

Earlier this year, BioWare was hit with layoffs as part of a downsizing of parent company Electronic Arts, but fans have been reassured that the next Mass Effect game hasn’t been impacted. Likewise, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s development is still churning along, with BioWare putting it at the forefront of its focus and rumors suggesting that it could launch sometime later this year. Fans might be getting another look at the long-in-development Dragon Age: Dreadwolf at the Summer Game Fest in June.

If the recently posted job offering for a temporary development manager is any indication, BioWare could have yet another surprise up its sleeve for when Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf are nearing completion. This mystery BioWare video game could truly be anything, from another spin-off of its two major properties to something entirely new. All there is to go on at the moment is a vague mention in the job posting, and it might still be some time before BioWare is ready to confirm any new games in its pipeline.

So a studio that spent years on anthem then this dragon age thing is now also working on another ip along with mass effect,

You think they would be worried that there brand has been on 3 major screw ups

Dragon age 3 launched broken with the frostbite engine yes its a good game but you can see in the late game how rough it was

anthem......

Mass effect 4 well that dev team was fired so yeah.....

They should make sure this new dragon age is a goat instead of putting more work on the table

bababooiy15d ago

Bioware today is like 150 poeple i dont see how they are seemingly working on all these projects at the same time.

Michiel198915d ago

Inquisition wasn't broken, it just had some flaws and on the contrary it also had some strengths. If you call inquisition a major screw up then idk what to say.

That said with what happened to the study since then and now, I'm not really confident that their next game will be any good.

just_looken15d ago

If you played it fully to get plat like me back in its novemeber launch window you had that castle with empty area's endgame missions not there or working and a mp that was made around loot box grind like the mass effect mp.

Its hard to explain to those that played it years later after they tossed out the dlc/patch's

Michiel198915d ago

entitled much? I played it at launch too. Why you even platted it if it was a "major screw up"?
It was good enough for you to sink 100 hours in but also a complete fuckup at the same time, make up your mind.
So either you like shitty games or you're just talking out of your ass.

RaidenBlack15d ago

Well just wanna say, Archetype Entertainment is the new BioWare, composed of mainly ex-BioWare vets.
And they're developing Exodus (starring Matthew McConaughey), a new sci-fi RPG (spiritual successor to Mass Effect, dare I say?)

CantThinkOfAUsername15d ago

I hope it's a single player game with Anthem's gameplay mechanics.

Becuzisaid15d ago

They're owned by EA. What makes you think that they wouldn't publish for PS5? Shoot, if your fridge could connect to your bank account EA would try to release it for that if they could!

Double_O_Revan16d ago

How about they focus on those games and not over extend themselves? We don't need another Anthem.

Becuzisaid15d ago

Bioware died after Inquisition (some would even argue after ME3). They are no longer the same company.

I can't fk with this list. They missed on alot of games probably before the writers times. Also I know people loved some portal but I was never a fan.

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG
LINK 2 the past
Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Inverno36d ago

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name36d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno36d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood36d ago (Edited 36d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno36d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure36d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
