Nintendo Wii Sales Double PS3?

Wii is outselling PS3 by more than a two to one margin, according to unconfirmed calculations.

According to the website NexGen Wars, as of 11:38 PM EST, Wii has sold a whopping 607,004 consoles compared to PS3, which has sold 255,172 units to date.

Is this accurate? We have no earthly idea, so don't go betting the farm on it. Here's what the website has to say:

The next generation of gaming is upon us, and the console wars has begun. NexGen Wars.com has spent countless hours researching sales facts from dozens of sources to track the worldwide sales of the consoles and monitor the next generation of console wars between the Microsoft Xbox 360, the Sony Playstation 3, and the Nintendo Wii. Remember, these numbers are only estimates, but they are constantly monitored and upated to assure the closest estimates possible for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Wii.

It'll take a wee bit of time to catch up to Xbox 360, who has sold 7,080,863 bad boys to date.

I understand that PS3 will of course ship more units, but I think _most_ of the sane people on this site realize there will still be some pretty big shortages well into Q1 of next year.

That said, how can a publisher possibly look at these numbers and _possibly_ consider a PS3 exclusive title, especially launching in 2007. Even today, if no more 360s sold (and they will), would you be willing to give up a market share of that sort of percentage? Sell to a mere 5% of the 360 population as it _currently_ stands and you'd be losing out on 354,000 units sold or somewhere in the neighborhood of $10-$15 million dollars. Sony _does not_ have that sort of money to back up an exclusive deal anymore.

Nintendo launched with twice as many units as Sony. I've been checking up on nexgenwars.com for a few months now.

Guys, Nextgenwars can't be accurate...

Realtime calculating is impossible...
The only thing they do is take the sales of the last months, calculate the average of units sold per minute and put it in the calculation.

For the Wii/PS3 that isn't an easy job because there are no former numbers. So I guess they're just guessing something.

And with the holiday sales about to begin, the numbers change dramatically every day. It'll step up in sales faster then this site can change the 'realtime' calculations. And 360 in the next gen gaming will benefit most of it, Sony is out of units generally and can't sell any even if they wanted. The XBOX 360 has been produced massively now for some time and will be in stock for all those that shop consoles for Christmas!

Its count of Xbox 360 sales hit 6 million a few days before Microsoft announced that (you guessed it) they had finally sold 6 million units. I don't know the details on how they do their calculations, but it works.
