Game of The Generation - The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

PixlBit | "Even though the transition into the newest generation of gaming consoles has been a gradual, whimpering affair so far, it’s pretty clear that the previous generation is wrapping up its final encore. To look back at how the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, and Nintendo DS thrilled us for years, PixlBit brings you our Game of the Generation series. Our staff has picked their personal favorite, most influential, most impactful games to highlight as we bid adieu to what was.
" (PC, PS3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Xbox 360)

I agree. It's my GOAT.

I respect the opinion, but Skyrim wasn't even my Game of the Year that year, and I'd say Oblivion was a better game. My Game of the Generation was Demon's Souls and the year Skyrim came out Dark Souls was my Game of the Year. Just my opinions.

i really loved Skyrim
it's the definition of western RPG

and the open world is massive
i still haven't after multiple playthroughs
finished all of the quests or visited all of the areas
AnotherProGamer  +   301d ago
I disagree

The story and characters are boring and don't develop, the combat system is floaty and unsatisfying, the dungeons are very repetitive and linear
Vegamyster  +   301d ago
The thing that impresses me about Skyrim is the sheer amount of content, you can put 100 hours into the game and discover stuff you haven't seen before. Most of the issues i have with the game can be fixed through mods.
AnotherProGamer  +   301d ago
I only got like 15-20 hours from it, I got bored when a lot of the quests were he same thing over and over also the mods couldn't really fix the combat or dungeons mostly just the UI and graphics

@AnotherProGamer

Ultimate Combat is a pretty good mod, way better then Oblivion.

Not to mention the bugs, crashes, glitches and terrible horse lol
I play Skyrim but it's a love hate affair.
I like to glitch so it's not all bad!

It's a decent game, but it's definitely not without its flaws, and doesn't deserve GOTY, let alone GOTG.
Quadraxis  +   301d ago
It wasn't even my game of the month, I'm honestly amazed by how people ignore the bland gameplay, combat and overall feeling of repetition.

Skyrim doesn't excel at anything (save exploration). There is no way Skyrim is "Game Of The Generation".

What was fun about Skyrim? Walking around, seeing what's in that cave, etc. But the combat, quests (save a few), and character customization were all standard and unremarkable.

There are many games last generation that did what Skyrim did, but did them better. A couple of examples that pop into my head, they're both RPGs.

Dark Souls had exciting, high risk combat and a sense of progression that Skyrim didn't achieve. The character customization was robust and allowed for many different builds.

Dragon Age: Origins had tactical and strategic combat that was gratifying. Dragon Age: Origins also had well written characters and a satisfying story. Skyrim has no characters and the story is filler.

Skyrim has good exploration and a lot to discover, but is mediocre at other things and this prevents it from holding any #1 spots.

So, why would this person go and call Skyrim "Game Of The Decade" and even go as far as to call it "art"? I have no idea.

Dragons Dogma!
AnotherProGamer  +   301d ago
That has one of the best combat systems in a RPG ever

I find it too hard to pick a GOTG but this would definitely be on my shortlist. I've played it to death now ( over 1000 hours ) so can't pick it up and play it anymore but I remember those first few hours of exploration and it was simply incredible, so immersive.

Skyrim feels like those open world games, that a lot of people seem to push out lately(indie games). It's all exploration, but everything else is lacking.

How it gathered such a fanatic fanbase is beyond me, since the flaws are right in their face.

I don't understand why a crowd of people say that skyrim was nothing special.

1.) I loved the first person combat im not sure if it's just me but made it feel more immersive and i didn't mind it either. I liked the way the combat played out and had some bosses that were hard when i played it on console. Of course the more i played 100's i got better but still nice system.
2.) Exploring i don't think i need to explain that. There are so many places to go and so many caves that yes seem like a repeat but also houses with secret switchs things that you have to pay attention to for you to experience them.
3.) Character devolpment i don't really see a huge reason for it as like a game with dragon age origins. I say that because you don't have any npc's that follow you around and impact anything to much. Only ones that do is ulfric and that quest line i found more in depth than others. Skyrim made me feel like this was my guy i was shaping the world didn't need others.
4.) One of the only games on console at least i can play and be like i want to go hunting with a bow take off armor and hunt for no reason, then ten minutes later fight a dragon very diverse option of things you can do.
5.) I had all of the DLC and to me it adds alot to the game with the couple they have i no LOTS of people didn't like the DLC but added even more depth of content than i already had. I have put over 1000 hours into skyrim if i didn't sell my 360 for my xbox one i would still play on and off now.

i don't play Skyrim until know because its had bad game play and combat system .

if they fix that and make the game play and combat looks like dark souls or kingdom of amalur or dragon dogma or the witcher then maybe get GOTY .

As a PS3 owner the worst thing about Skyrim were the game breaking bugs and horrible performance due to Bethesda shoddy programming.
MasterCornholio  +   300d ago
From what I played I'd say that Lost Odyssey was my game of the generation.

Games like Uncharted 2, Demon Souls, Infamous, Killzone 2, Oblivion, Batman Arkham City etc are in my top 10 though.
