Early Access Belongs on PC, Not Consoles

"Early Access" has become a buzz phrase this week in gaming. Steam already offers this program, allowing developers to release early, work-in-progress versions of their games on their store. This may spread to consoles in the near future, as Sony is considering an early access program and indie developers have asked Microsoft to follow suit as well. Is Early Access right for the console environment? Gamnesia author Ben Lamoreux delves into the subject inside.

I don't think it should be denied to one or the other, it's actually exclusivity to one or the other that I have a problem with.

I'm on the same page as you. It's the same way with third party DLC. Just because the dev has there hand in Sonys or Microsofts pocket one of the sides looses out on gameplay. At least give the people who loose out on the exclusive DLC $5 off or something.

I'm just wondering if gamestop gets there exclusive DLC. How long until more retailers do that so there sales don't plummet? Then gamers will be missing out on lots of hours of content.

If you are NOT gonna use early access to listen to the gamers playing it then early access is a waste of time no matter the platform.

Many PC devs have been good about implementing changes that early access gamers wanted or using early access to really fine tune the netcode and gameplay.

in some situations I've seen early access just be a cheap way for a Dev/Pub or a SCUM BAG game like WarZ to make some free cash.

i really don't understand this early access business that everyone is jumping on. what happened to free alpha and beta test. the time i am investing in helping you make your product a success should be enough. they the developers are trying to sell me a product / service but i am paying them to test their product that really does not make ANY sense to me. first it was paying for demos now paying for beta access

You aren't "paying to test a game". You buy the game early and play it as it progresses through development. And when its released you get what you already paid for.

Sometimes Early access games costs more and sometimes it costs less. Its NOT forced on anyone and can be completely ignored until release.

Gamers being involved in the process and developers getting constant feedback on every little thing will produce a better game in the end. If it doesn't, you will know well ahead of time to stay away. Its a win-win if you choose not to do it.

Yes, there is the possibility that a game may not be completed and you get no refund. I have quite a few Early Access titles and I don't see that happening with any of them. But if it did, well, that one is on me, I took the risk and I knew it could happen. Simple as that.

If that's unacceptable to you, that's totally fine. You are completely free to ignore Early Access. Provided, of course you aren't the type to hit the 'buy' button with out even looking at the store page.

if it happen on consoles they will destroy this model its already a lil shaky. when thing hit console publisher destroys the concept of things. early access suppose to be a way for gamers to help indies fund their game, why are people support big name publishers doing this when they could just release a beta. dlc use to be a huge expansion pack, now look at it. i could go on but got to go to work

The purpose of early access is to patch the game with the help of community.
Something that you better not do on consoles, cause the developer will have to pay 40,000$ for every update of their game on consoles.

That is the reason Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike Global Offensive, Payday 2 get their updates late, or never at all on consoles.
That is the reason the content of games on pc, like Witcher 2 or Left 4 Dead 2 was given out to gamers on pc for free, while consoles gamers had to pay for it.

THIS. I'm a console gamer. I'm NOT TRYING to play my games like a PC gamer. We don't need this...

LOL. It "belongs" to PC.
These titles folk, these titles.

We basically paid early access full price for battlefield 4. Look how that turned out.
