Xbox Live Gold versus PS Plus: which is the best value?

If you’re a multiplayer console gamer, an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus subscription is pretty much essential, and even those who tend to stick to single-player can get a fair bit of value from either prospect. Let’s run down the two services and see what each brings to the table.

Until we start getting AAA tittles for free on the Current Gen systems then I don't think one is any better than the other. There is currently a great library of free AAA titles for the PS3. I know the PS4 has a much smaller library but it would be nice to have 1 or 2 big titles for free on the X1 & PS4.

The problem with the discounts is that you can still save another $15-$20 buying a used copy of a game even when the games are marked down. I still believe that Digital only games need to start @ $45. There needs to be some sort of benefit to buying a copy of a game that cannot be traded in. Every hard copy game I own eventually gets traded in or sold on ebay. This is money that the publisher will never see. Instead of selling 2 copies for $45 they're only selling 1 copy for $60.00.

Well Sony already said that first AAA to hit PS4 should be before the end of the year. Will probably be Knack, but since it's selling fairly well in Japan, might be something else.

It's hard to gives game for free when they are less than a year old.

Neonridr691d ago

Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, NBA 2K14, etc were all less than a year old on PS3 when they were given away.

ShinMaster691d ago

PS Plus is $10 cheaper and it works across 3 platforms.

@ Neonridr

True.

PSN/PS+ has always been Superior since the beginning of Time.

I love my PS consoles and PS+, but it started out pretty average. For a while it was no contest, then MS picked up the slack and they are more comparable.

Even so, MS hiked Live up to $60, and in my opinion are still a less attractive service.

DEEBO691d ago

Sony has the better plan but MS is improving alot.

But having a ps3,vita and ps4 you are getting your money's worth.

not everyone owns all 3. vita sales would tell u that. glad MSFT doesn't own a portable device

JBSleek691d ago

If you own all three consoles from Sony it's pretty hard to argue against it's value from the simple fact that MS doesn't make a handheld so there would be less content by default.

If you don't then it's really a toss up honestly and I don't think their is a clear winner. Of course there are services you prefer but arguments could be made for both.

If the lists of games offered by both services is compared objectively, Playstation Plus is definitely the better value of the two services.

There were 144 games offered for the PS3 by PS Plus since 6/29/2010

There were 12 games offered for the PS4 by PS Plus since 11/15/2014

There have been 44 games offered for the Vita by PS+ since 11/20/2012

And there were 87 games that were offered cross platform PS1, 2, 3, PSP, PSVita by PS+ since 6/29/2010

Total - 287 games offered by PS+ since June 2010. Over the past 4 years, that's an average of 70 games per year, 6 games per month.

Xbox Live Games With Gold - short list

3 games offered on Xbox One
28 games offered for Xbox 360 since 6/10/2013

Basicly 1 year of service, 31 games, average of 3 games per month.

6 games per month vs 3 games per month and PS+ is 10 dollars less.

Need I say more?

I wouldn't disagree with last gen. PS3 online was better for gamers. It was free to play online and you got games with playstation plus, even though the 360 had a better online experience. Sony didn't charge people for playing online last gen and i think this helped them a lot last gen realistically.

This gen is still too early to declare a winner. PS4 has lot more variety with games, but lot of them are from the PC (free to play and indie stuff)

Its hard to declare Sony the winner now online isn't free anymore and Microsoft also gives away games for free now too.

Online experience. Microsoft obviously wins there as Sony doesn't offer dedicated servers for first party games. If you're playing on dedicated servers they belong to a third party developer.

BlackTar187691d ago

Dude PS3 had dedicated servers on a # of games.

MasterCornholio691d ago (Edited 691d ago )

Sorry buddy but PSN has dedicated servers as well. Just because Microsoft has Azure doesn't mean that no one else can have dedicated servers.

Might as well apologize now.

BlackTar187691d ago

@Knws,

Pretty sure you've never considered psn to be better.

Drekken691d ago

/thread. End it. You killed it.

bahabeast691d ago

ps plus on ps3 is pretty damn good and the only reason its lacking on the ps4 is because they maybe want to make as much money as possible before giving games away free.
