On The Topic Of Remakes, Remasters And HD Collections

An EGMR writer looks at remakes, remasters and HD collections, and poses some points worth pondering.

Quote: "Nobody loves a remake. And yet when that remake is of something we adore, everyone wants a remake.

The thing is, remakes are bad. And you should feel bad. Yet why do I so desperately want to get my hands on a shiny new Xbox One and then purchase and play through Grand Theft Auto V again, when I’ve already done so on Xbox 360? Is it nostalgia? Of course not, I’m just a graphics whore. Okay sure, but then why do I also want to get my hands on a PlayStation 4 so I can play Grim Fandango when the HD remake comes out? … "

The story is too old to be commented.

Author does not seem to understand how backwards compatibility works.

I stopped reading after that point. I could write a much better opinion piece after reading this; without the negative and name calling. My take on HD remakes/Remasters can go one of multiple routes. If they have some HD collection to grab some fans of a series before a new game comes out, I'm all for it. Some HD remasters exist because a game was considered ahead of its time (some games), or because at the time due to various reasons the sales weren't as expected. Something like GTA 5 I can see on next gen since it will be a long time before R comes out with a new GTA that can't be put to just DLC. Fallout 3/NV I can see getting some sort of HD to iron out the bugs/glitches on new tech/hardware without all the limitations of current gen with the PS3/360.

There's way more I can write however I have an Evo tournament to prepare for.

I just want two more last gen games to come over to this gen, and they DO deserve to cross over with all the over 100 gaming awards and jazz, but *ONLY with all DLC, addons, no sneaky micro-transactions.

1)Mass Effect Trilogy(PC port)+ 8GB Texture Res Pack.

2)Elder Scrolls V: SKYRIM Legendary Edition(PC port) w High Resolution Pack(DLC)

Put these two GEMS over the fence, and I'll be satisfied with nothing else being ported over.

"The thing is, remakes are bad. And you should feel bad"...

By that logic they should never put out an older remastered movie on Blu-ray. After all you already saw that movie on VHS tape, why buy or watch it again on blu ray, all that is different is more res and clearer picture, it is the same story and you already know how it ends. Who cares that my blu ray player is not backwards compatible to tapes from my long gone VHS tape player. Only new movies should come out on blu ray.

I mean I saw Aliens on tape, then they had the nerve to come out with it on DVD, then again on Blu Ray! This remastering really needs to end! Before you know it they will remaster Aliens again for 4K even though we all saw it on VHS tape! What a bunch of money grubbin' hustlers!

@Tsar4ever

Ok sarcasm aside I would love Skyrim on the PS4 in 1080p and better lighting and textures. And the bioshocks, ME, etc.

I don't think the author understands how much of a resource and financial investment it is to rewrite a game to be compatible with new hardware.
