After delaying DriveClub, Evolution is back on track with its PS4 debut

Let’s get this out of the way now: when it launches in early October, DriveClub will render at 1080p, but only at 30fps. Evolution Studios had hoped to achieve 60fps when development began, but even with PS4’s formidable power, apparently something had to give under the weight of the sheer amount of detail the team is cramming into the game. But in a genre that’s all about precision and speed, is framerate really worth sacrificing for the sake of fidelity? (Driveclub, PS4)

Beautiful this game is turning out to be a next gen racer that we can be proud of :)
NextLevel  +   56d ago
“I absolutely think so,” DriveClub game director and former design director Paul Rustchynsky tells us. “I suspect a lot of people think we may have compromised the gameplay experience by choosing 30fps, but we’ve spent a huge amount of time minimising the latency between the pad and what happens inside the game so you never feel disconnected, and you never feel like you’re getting a sub-par experience."

Agreed. Driveclub is an absolutely gorgeous game, one of the best looking games of 2014. I'd rather have a stable framerate than a floppy one, so I'm good with this. Hopefully Driveclub 2 can reach 60FPS, cause that would make it all the better.

This was a good interview and one that I like as they are not sugar coating their decisions. Devs that already up front need to be like this.
nicksetzer1  +   56d ago
I wouldn't necessarily call them "up front" with things. They didn't say they were delaying the game until about 2 weeks before it was meant to release, they didn't say how long it was being delayed until almost 6 months later and they said no microtransactions (and insulted others for having them) only to take it back 3 weeks later. Don't get me wrong, game looks great, but the PR surrounding it is deceitful at best.

Many other devs are far more reliable and trustworthy, like naughtydog, ready at dawn and a few others.

Pretty much every Dev is more trustworthy than that. That's an EA move right there.
HeWhoWalks  +   56d ago
Delaying a game is generally on the publisher, not the dev. The former has the final say. Second, I saw their interviews regarding the delay process. They were up front about why the delay happened. At best, you have a point on the microtransactions, but even then, it's a stretch.

OT: Good to see things sorted and the game is well on its way!
Kayant  +   56d ago
I wasn't really talking about those kinds of decision but you're right I was more talking about trade offs with fixed hardware.

I mean to say devs that aren't already being upfront need to change their mindshare like he has and start being upfront about their trade offs for their vision.
nicksetzer1  +   56d ago
Fair enough, I agree this interview is pretty transparent, I was just referring more to you statement that "more devs should be like them," (your edit says "devs that already upfront" not sure why you edited) that I can't really agree with.

Regardless their PR decisions don't change that they have made a really impressive game, looking forward to see more of it.

Drive Club is turning to be a winner. my only complaint DC needs more smoke effects/particle effects.
Mexxan  +   56d ago
Agree, I love Forza 5 but the smoke effects are plain lame. its these effects that really add a level of realism.
Eonjay  +   55d ago
From the article:

"DriveClub is, visually speaking, worlds ahead of the previous build we played, and the team is promising even more improvements in the form of reworked particle effects, depth-of-field tweaks and other flourishes"
Kurisu  +   56d ago
Looking forward to this. The last racing game I played was Burnout Paradise (yeah, it's been a while). Hoping there's a DriveClub Bundle! MotorStorm was my first PS3 game so makes sense for me to get DriveClub as my first game on PS4!

60fps>1080p for a racer.

People who only care about numbers on a spreadsheet than rather play an amazing game, like you, sicken me. 30fps has NEVER been a game breaker, EVER. In fact, many of the best games to ever release have been 30fps. Driveclub is going to be incredible not only visually, but also from from a gameplay perspective.

BLKxSEPTEMBER  +   56d ago
and people like you who cant take anyone elses opinion sickens me! what makes u think i care about numbers? go thru my comment history and find one comment i made that supports your claim. i care about gameplay over graphics and the devs clearly chose graphics over gameplay. mario kark looks great AND runs and 60 fps which makes it play even better. shooters, racers, and fighters should be 60fps this gen point blank. games like uncharted where theres lots of duck and cover dont really need to be 60fps. you clearly missed my entire point along with a few other morons.
Mexxan  +   56d ago
Driveclub may be visually impressive but if your saying 60 fps isn't preferred for a racing game you may benefit from playing a 60 fps racing game - the drop back to 30 fps really does effect the quality and 'solidity' of the experience.

If the game is good at 30fps, then I'll take it.
stripe814  +   56d ago
sigh..racing games before dont run on 60fps but way more enjoyable than racing games now...stop the BS racing is better on higher frames..
cee773  +   56d ago

just off the top of my head previous and upcoming racers thats 30fps

project gotham racing
forza horizon
need for speed
The crew
XiNarutoUzumaki  +   56d ago
YEah. Forza Horizon 2 sucks because of 30 FPS right?
Kayant  +   56d ago
Not really the reason it's 30fps. You do know it has dynamic lighting with real time shadows and reflections , soon to be weather, day/night cycle and other things.
Forn  +   56d ago

Yes, 60fps>30fps, but if the game is fun, and happens to also be a visual spectacle, then who f'n cares? Driveclub is going to be hella sweet. Don't be a fool.

All or almost all arcadish driving games are 30 fps...

And i have not heard anyone complaining, go figure...

Anyway it's the devs choice to favor fidelity and not the fps...

If it is not to your taste,it is fine with me, but you gotta know that there are plenty who look at it on a different spot.

Although I believe it will launch this time. I'll still not get myself hyped up until I actually have it in my hands :-/

Can't wait to play this beast, and have my jaw dropped the entire time whilst doing it.
Muzikguy  +   56d ago
I'm not rushing summer along, but at least I'll have something to look forward to when it's over!

On another note I really hope this game lives up to the hype of late. I'm so tired of all these "look what we did" articles of games that come out and underperform. I know that's why I've been staying away from news about Driveclub. I just can't help myself!!

Sooooooo 30fps is OK if it's on the PS4?, LOL, more back pedaling than a reverse cycle race
JOLLY1  +   56d ago
I think 30 fps is fine. As you can tell by my avatar, I prefer the One console, but who cares. Forza Horizon 2 will be 30 fps and I will be playing the carp out of that. Be happy with what you have!
Immorals  +   56d ago
I think the main issue that DC is 30fps is that it's in a closed, track environment. FH2 is different as it's in a huge open world.

Either way, I'd prefer 60fps on my racers
JOLLY1  +   56d ago
I would prefer it also, but that doesn't mean it is bad. It is an arcade racer. I personally think all the stuff all over the screen ruins the game. Burnout bugged me with all of the stuff that was plastered all over the screen also. To each their own. I am sure the PS people are just happy to have any sort of racer.
HeWhoWalks  +   56d ago
I could say the same thing about certain Xbox fans sudden warming to Indie titles when games like Warframe and Outlast come to their preferred machine. Backpedaling happens on every side.
snookiegamer  +   56d ago
Driveclub will be 1080P and locked @30fps.

NFS Rivals runs @30fps and played just fine...just saying ;)
S2Killinit  +   56d ago
they are gonna make the first racer for PS4, a good one indeed.
Back-to-Back  +   56d ago
30fps means I will stick with the free version. I refuse to buy a next gen racer that is sub 60fps. No excuses.
GW212  +   55d ago
I think I might agree with you there. I don't really like racing games much anyway. I'll have a bunch of alternatives when DC comes out anyway.
TheRacingX  +   56d ago
The hypocrisy between PS and X camps is unreal.....this is why EVERYONE should just STFU and play whatever system/games you like.....who cares whats 30fps....921P.....sub HD, 3D, 60fps, big , small, noisy , quiet, bluetooth , sharktooth, cloud based, space raced......gold jacket green jacket who gives a crapper.....its a box that plays games.....as Nike says...just play. peace
GW212  +   55d ago
I thought Nike said "Just Do It."

I'm so out of the loop. I don't even know what sharktooth is. Or space raced.
jhoward585  +   56d ago
30fps means DC spectator mode would run smoothly, especially on mobile phones.

I want everything to run smooth/fast so 30fps was the best choice.

If a game needs a year extra it was way off track, stuff is still to be patched as well, Sony could have scrapped it and should have done so.
Skate-AK  +   55d ago
Going to get the bundle with this since it was just announced.
Mexxan  +   55d ago
I'm looking forward to DC, but I think FH2 is gonna be better. As stated above open world. DC should have been released spring latest. Enough of the ready when it's ready bollocks. I'm sure TURN 10 around have loved that too.
