Xbox One's Next Hurdle, Developing True Exclusives

For all the complaints about the Xbox One, be they Kinect or resolution or what have you, I think their biggest struggle is a lack of compelling exclusive franchises. Rather than list theirs and that of their competitors, I always try to envision it like this: If you had to make an “all stars” fighting game for Xbox, who would you have as playable characters?

The story is too old to be commented.
NextLevel1246d ago (Edited 1246d ago )

You would actually have own studio that make games first, most of Microsoft's studios focus on Kinect, Multimedia features, Updates and Apps.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/w...

Microsoft just use their 1st party to cycle Halo, Forza, Fable and now Gears. They use 3rd parties to introduce new IPs, Sunset Overdrive, Ryse, Scalebound etc.

Besides Halo & Gears do Xbox Exclusives sell?

bouzebbal1245d ago

terrible list to claim xbox has exclusives.
check the track record before. what did 360 get of exclusives in the last 3-4 years?

Tyrus_911245d ago (Edited 1245d ago )

I love how NextLevel includes non-gaming related studios in an article discussing Xbox exclusives to pad out the list.

I think XBO is doing well at the moment with exclusives - looking forward to Quantum Break - but I'm cautious. Too many people seem to conveniently forget or ignore what Microsoft did with the Xbox 360 - first three years exclusives galore (Blue Dragon, Dead Rising, Lost Oddysey, Tales of Vesperia), middle years slow the exclusives line-up down and let said MS-published exclusives go multiplatform (Mass Effect, Ninja Gaiden) or to PC (Alan Wake, Fable) last three years (2010-2013) almost none except Halo, Forza, Gears and Kinect. This pic pretty much shows the exclusives disparity and the abandonment of the 360, whereas the PS3 is still getting exclusives even now: http://i.imgur.com/zl10SZ0....

Xbox One already lost Dead Rising 3 (PC), Plants vs Zombies (to PS4) and Titanfall 2 (to PS4) so I hope they invest more exclusives with their first-party studios rather than buyout third-parties for a limited time.

Hey, Nextlevel, did you just copy N' pasted Mariahelfutura's posting? I swore I saw something similar before, and lord and behold, here it is.
Funny how great minds think alike, even at 440 days apart. :-D

@NextLevel

I think your pretty sad. You show up in every xbox thread.first to post.. with your same old anti-xbox drivel. Go out and get some sun. Go play the console you enjoy ( I am assuming a PS)...Go and do something...anything. Seriously...at first you was annoying...now I just pity you. Do you sit there waiting for xbox articles to pop up just post the same old crap? Does it make your day more fulfilled? You need a new hobby.Seriously.

Your post above is probably about the only non-flamebait thing you ever said. But You should know...we see through you.

marlinfan101245d ago (Edited 1245d ago )

@nextlevel

your post get more and more pathetic by the article. are you really wasting your time researching all MS's studios to post on here to try and bash them? lol get a life man, or even better, go play your ps4! i always see you talking about it on here but you never seem to make time to play it.

i really don't understand how you ever got up to 6 bubbles.

with xbox360 MS used majority of the time same 3-4 IP's and those sold well. But i hope with xbox one they let their developer side take some risk and bring some fresh ideas to the table.

Halo,Gears,Forza,Fable,Crackd owd were all used throughout last gen.

gamer1138

not really when you look at how much sony is doing with self publishing, they feel like if they are paying for majority of the development/advertisement funds than they should own the IP. Take-two a 3rd party publisher also looks to do the same, EA had partner's program where you kept your Ip's but that's over too

sunset overdrive is an IP that is owned by Insomniac meaning future games can be exclusive or come to other platforms. what if the next sunset overdrive game is a PS4 exclusive than how would MS feel?

also mass effect doesn't count because EA bought them, meaning a 3rd party publisher

Volkama1245d ago

EA's Partners program is over? Wonder what that means for Titanfall 2.

showtimefolks1245d ago

Volkama

It ended with Fuse, respawn had already signed so it was grandfathered in. Moving forward its all up to Respawn. Just like how take-two/2k have a deal with gearbox, gearbox own the borderlands IP but take-two publishes it

TitanFall 2 will be published by EA, it was announced that EA has signed up to be the publisher for future TF game or games

it was a great program, EA were the first major publisher to not get Ip's if they publish it. Suda51 also did a game under EA's partners program

for all the crap EA gets for being the bad company, Partners program was a legit good thing

gamer11381246d ago (Edited 1246d ago )

@Next Level

343
Black Tusk
Playground
Lionhead
Turn 10
Team Daokta(project spark)
Twisted Pixel
Lift London

That's from your own link. Not to mention developers like Undead Labs and Moon Studios who are 2nd party.

NextLevel1246d ago

Yep. That's them, most of them are generally unheard of. Like I said, they use their 1st party to cycle their franchises. Nothing wrong with that, that's just how they do it and why you don't see many new IPs deeper into any Xbox consoles lifecycle.

maniacmayhem1246d ago

That's 10 studios plus Rare that makes games for the Xbox One. I am not seeing what your high level, stealth trolling is trying to prove but MS has more than enough 1st party studios making games for their system.

gamer11381246d ago

Lets look at that for a moment.

343 - Halo Franchise
Black Tusk - Gears + new IP
Playground - Forza Horizon
Lionhead - Fable Legends + new Ip
Turn 10 - Forza Motorsport
Team Dakota - Project Spark is new IP
Twisted Pixel - New IP
Lift London - Your own link say they are developing 4 new IP

I count 4 franchises; Halo, Gears, Fable, Forza. I count 7 new IP.

Sony and MS run two different philosophies. Sony prefers to OWN everyone and everything they make. Hence why Insomniac are with MS for SSOD. They wanted to keep control of their IP. MS prefer to WORK with developers, help them make their game and ask it to stay on their platform. Sometimes they do (gears) sometimes they don't (Mass Effect).

Most of them unheard of? Team Dokata and Lift London perhaps. The others are fairly well known.

Let's have a Sony list and see how they compare? Can you dig one of those out?

christocolus1246d ago (Edited 1246d ago )

@nextlevel

Dude give it a rest.don't you get tired of trolling? Its all you do. Imagine the 1st three comments in this article.all by the same person.trying so hard to prove a crappy point. You need to get out more often. Always trolling. First it was “all microsoft studios are working on media and apps“ and now its “all microsoft studios are recycling the same games and 3rd party making new ips”. Lmao. MS and Sony are two diferent companies running things in different ways.MS will keep funding new ips ,opening studios and working with 2nd and 3rd party cos they prefer it that way but I want to know. What is your business? What do you care? Do you have an xbox one? Are you intersted in the console? If not, then why spend so much time and energy on it? You need to stop trolling this hard dude. Its not healthy.

christocolus1246d ago

The guy is a troll, just go through most of his comments.you'll see. He keeps bringing that link up and picking the things that are favorable to his biased argument.

McScroggz1245d ago (Edited 1245d ago )

Naughty Dog : Uncharted franchise + New IP
Sony Santa Monica: God of War franchise + New IP
Sucker Punch: inFamous franchise
Guerilla Games: Killzone + New IP
Guerilla Games Cambridge: New IP
Sony San Diego: MLB The Show franchise + New IP
Polyphony Digital: Grant Turismo franchise
Evolution: New IP
Sony Bend: New IP?
Media Molecule: New IP
SCE Japan: New IP

Now, that's not a comprehensive list. There are probably half a dozen other teams working on games, but that's a reasonable list. Sony has, by my estimation, the most 1st party development teams. This allows them to strike a balance between iteration and innovation.

Microsoft really does rely heavily on their four pillar franchises: Halo, Gears, Forza and Fable. Sony release sequels, sure, but it's more about the development studios than it is about specific franchises - well, aside from Gran Turismo :)

nucky641245d ago (Edited 1245d ago )

may not be "comprehensive" but what you have listed has big-hitters across the board - very impressive group of studios that sony has with them. and don't forget FROM software....sony doesn't own them but they're working with SCE Japan to make "bloodborne".....and anytime FROM or miyazaki is making an exclusive, it's worth noting!!!

GrandpaSnake1245d ago

The new IP's havent been announced yet, the playstation strategy is the same as always. people trying to actively bring to light some sort of comparison are not letting all the cards play out. It has not even been a year and some of the posters here are trying to prove a needless point. xbox pulls strong in the first year and maybe a couple after that, sony on the other hand has supported their fans with much more content in video games since playstation one. sony studios are technically much better to own then just partially buying out exclusivity, it is what is flexed with microsoft $$$$$$$, that is what people dont really see as well. sony has kind of started to adopt some of those practices(exclusive dlc/destiny) and honestly it is really bad and you can thank microsoft for this tactic.

Honestly, just make true innovative exclusives like Naughty dog!

Hellsvacancy1246d ago

If it was that easy every developer would do that

Kavorklestein1245d ago (Edited 1245d ago )

There's plenty of good devs out there, I promise that thinking Naughty Dog is best studio ever is purely subjective to the person playing their games.

I don't think there is a true answer to "Who is the best developer/studio?" OR "Who has the best controller, console, games/exclusives?" questions...

It always has been, and always will be a question of perspective, subjectivity, and preference/personal feelings about _______________.

There is the argument that certain things have MORE Value than others to consider as well. And many times, the main focus of such a discussion is performance.

But if the things that are considered valuable about anything in a video game, or about a video game console, or anything else video game related are all going to matter more or less to any specific person, then, there NEVER has been, or EVER will be, a 'Right' OR 'Wrong' answer to what is the best video game/developer/generation/ console/online service/controller/extra peripheral, or features about anything.

REGARDLESS of what the hell it actually is.
Real Talk.

Kavorklestein1242d ago

Anyone who disagreed with my comment is beyond saving.

mhunterjr1246d ago (Edited 1246d ago )

Microsoft has a ton of exclusive IPs, they just desperately need to revive them (with quality titles). Perfect Dark, Conker, Banjo Kazooie, Battle Toads, Kameo, Jet Force Gemini, Crimson Skies, Blinx, Brute Force, PGR, Midtown Madness (a personal favorite of mine) etc...

Now that Titan Fall is going multiplat, the need to reimagine MechAssualt, which had jet pack toting mech pilots long before Titan Fall was even thought of...

Make it happen, MS

mmc-0071245d ago

maybe than i consider buying a XB1, but aslong as they keep milking halo en gears i'm out
