Critical Intel The Historical Case for Playable Women in Assassin's Creed: Unity

On October 5th, 1789 a mob of women - many of them market sellers armed with knives - stormed into Paris' city hall. The riot had begun over high bread prices, but as the six thousand women swarmed over the guards at the Hôtel de Ville they started grabbing more than bread. Taking up pikes, guns and even cannons, they coalesced into a single marching column.

I'm not opposed to women being in video games. Many of my favorite games have female protagonists. What I AM against is forcing the issue. Yes women were Assassains throughout history, but by no means were they the majority. They participated in the revolutions all throughout the world (and they are in the crowds of this game doing so), but again were not the majority of those taking violent action. No one is saying that women haven't played a role in history...just not in this story.

I feel like the more people try to force things like this, the more it actually hurts the cause for women being respected for being women. It comes across as whining. Videogames have basically become a medium for telling stories....not EVERY story has to be about a woman. It's fine when they are, but accusing stories of being sexist or somehow wrong for not doing so is just as sexist. I can't think of a single story or game where the hero is a female, and anyone is upset that it's not a man. It's also odd that in this attempt to be "fair"...no one is demanding female villains.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I love games with female protagonists...Tombraider, Mirror's Edge, Resident Evil, etc. ...but there is no reason at all to force it.

Although I will admit that there is one HUGE advantage of having a female lead in every game. It may help females become endeared to gaming a little easier. Guys like gamer girls. When people don't understand something they tend to shun it away. If more girls were into gaming, it would just become hobbies that guys and girls could do together instead of being a friction point. Games have become an excellent medium...in MANY ways better than TV IMO...but that's a whole 'nother conversation.
