How ‘Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’ Was Influenced by ‘The Last of Us’

Among the many surprises at E3 2014 was just how somber the tone of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End trailer was. The Uncharted games are best known for their witty banter, massive set pieces and Hollywood action movie tone. In this cinematic, however, Nathan Drake was shown waking up by a river, bathed in muted grey-blue moonlight and looking several years older than in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception (and even more like Nathan Fillion). Both the trailer and the game’s subtitle seemed to indicate a real change of tone for the next entry in the Uncharted franchise.

Gonna be a epic end for uncharted.

akurtz1647d ago

epic indeed. running through the uc games again for nostalgia.

Have Naughty Dog said that this is the last Uncharted game? I don't get where people get that from. Sure the title is "A thief's End", but that can mean so many things. I am really hoping it isn't the last game in the series, I'd love me some Nathan Drake :(

Magnes1647d ago

It won't be the last UC game you can take all your money and bet it on that.

Lon3wolf1647d ago

Nolan North has been quoted as saying it may be the last one. ND have not commented as far as I am aware. This will be one of the first games I buy when I get to buying a PS4 (most probably next year). Do like the Uncharted games and hope they do more after 4, maybe they will swap Drake out but not sure how that would work.

Madly_Impossible1647d ago

although Nolan North has been quoted saying "this may be the last one..not sure" i think it had a lot more to do with this being his last in the series will focus on another character which obviously will remove him from the mix altogether.

Conzul1647d ago (Edited 1647d ago )

Pretty sure it's the final Drake story, if not the final uncharted. Between the title, the hidden bible quote, and the dialogue from the trailer (" last time? One last time, kid...") also read the YouTube description under the official Playstation channel video for the trailer.

If I were the betting type I'd put all my money on this being the final installment. But hey, that makes it all the more awesome.
Time for new IP

SmielmaN1646d ago

4 great games in a new IP is pretty exceptional though, and after seeing The Last Of Us I am very eager to see what they may come up with. So as much as I enjoy UC it might be time for a break and see the next UC and TLOU?

One things for sure, PS3/4 owners are very happy Naughty Dog is making games at that level.

TLOU kind of reminded me of The Walking Dead. The ending floored me. And the Ellie section, beginning to end. Can't wait for PS4 vers. TLOU and UC4 and then whatever's next!

If it is it would I'll have to go on an internet sabbatical , cause spoilers seem to pop up all over the net. All the years and years of buildup spoiled by a single sentence .

dafegamer1647d ago

They should keep the lighthearted-ness of the uncharted series though

iamnsuperman1647d ago

I would like to see a new direction for Uncharted. They can still have lighthearted parts but I would like it become more meaningful. They tried with Uncharted 3 but it could have been executed a lot better. The teaser looks like it might go in that direction which I am excited for.

If this is going to be the end of the uncharted series, I think that it is necessary for this game to be darker than previous entries. I think that a darker theme will ensure that the end to one of the greatest stories in gaming will have a lasting emotional effect.

DigitalRaptor1647d ago (Edited 1647d ago )

They will keep it.

I can't see Bruce and Neil doing a disservice to an IP, to serve their own egos. Game/creative directors with their heads screwed on, tend not to do that.

"A Thief's End" - might just turn out to be a red herring. I still expect a well written storyline and deeper characters, but in keeping with the DNA of the series it has to be a true Uncharted game, if they plan on ending it on a high note.

PaleMoonDeath1647d ago

I remember telling myself after my first play through of TLOU that I'd never be able to play an Uncharted again, I was wrong. Seeing a darker tone is exactly what I wanted, but I would like to keep the moments of Drake being himself too.

UC2 > UC3, Neil and the other fella worked on UC2.. High hopes here, very high actually.

PaleMoonDeath1647d ago

With the disagrees, I guess you guys don't want a more serious Uncharted game?

Magnes1647d ago (Edited 1647d ago )

My opinion we already have plenty of the dark dreary games do they all have to be that way?

GenericNameHere1647d ago

Even though Neil and Bruce are now the leads for the game, I don't think everyone should be scared of how the game will turn out. They know Uncharted should be the light hearted Indiana Jones type game. If you look at the Uncharted 2 footage reveal at the Spike VGA, Drake was stranded in a snowing mountain, all bloodied up, and finding the scary looking Pharma Dagger. Compare it to U4, and Drake's also bloodied up, stranded in a forest, with a whole bunch of skeletons locked up in cages. Setting the same tone. We should trust the leads that worked on both Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us!

Madly_Impossible1647d ago

well said. i think its going to resemble the other uncharted games with a bit of a more realistic tone (Next Gen Reference).

BitbyDeath1647d ago

Great to hear they are evolving it a bit. Uncharted 3 just felt like more of number 2 but with a bunch of set pieces that did not fit together well.
