EA Sports UFC demo performance analysis

Eurogamer:

"This limited demo includes just two fighters, Alexander Gustafsson and Jon Jones, throwing down in a single match, but it paints a fairly positive picture. Despite EA Sports focusing on 1080p60 with its suite of launch games, UFC appears instead to operate at 1600x900 on both consoles, making this the third PS4 title to forego a full 1080p presentation, but thankfully the darkened arenas, generous post-processing, and lack of finer distant detail prevent this from ruining the experience and we're still left with a clean presentation. It's only when examining selected anti-aliasing techniques that we see any real differences between the two.

The PS4 version utilises a much more comprehensive 4x MSAA solution (perhaps with a post-process anti-aliasing technique on top) that manages to nearly eliminate aliasing in most situations despite the lower resolution. Xbox One doesn't fare quite so well, with image quality falling short of the PS4 version - 2x MSAA appears to be present, though we're not sure if there's a post-process on top, or whether we're just seeing the results of upscaling."

So lets see here -

EA lies - Neither is 1080p

PS4 advantage - 4xMSAA vs 2xMSAA
"The PS4 version utilises a much more comprehensive 4x MSAA solution (perhaps with a post-process anti-aliasing technique on top) that manages to nearly eliminate aliasing in most situations despite the lower resolution. Xbox One doesn't fare quite so well, with image quality falling short of the PS4 version - 2x MSAA appears to be present, though we're not sure if there's a post-process on top, or whether we're just seeing the results of upscaling."
Higher quality motion blur
"This also stands as the second noticeable difference between the two versions: motion blur on Xbox One operates at a lower precision, utilising half the samples of the PS4 game"

Very sightly nicer shadows
"We also see clean, artefact-free soft-shadows cascading over everything, appearing just a tad sharper on PS4"

Framerate - XB1 has more consistent framerate but not by much. PS4 offer drops 1 fps to 29 during pre-fight and during the match drops to the same level again.

"The fights themselves maintain a mostly consistent update, but the rest of the experience feels unpolished as a result. We also observe occasional torn frames manifesting on PS4 along the top ten per cent of the image though the darkened arena does a good job at hiding this flaw most of the time.

So, while PS4 has a distinct advantage in terms of image quality, it is the Xbox One version of the game that has the slightest of performance advantages. Once the fight begins, however, they both put up similar statistics and the PS4 issues - as small as they are - will hopefully be corrected for launch"

The hilarious thing is that nobody noticed that it wasn't 1080p until they were told, and that they said it looked amazing until they found out the resolution.

Kayant1290d ago

Given the heavy use of motion blur which will it look blurry and 4xMSAA which largely clean up the image it's not that surprising.

So a fighting game... is sub1080p... and runs at 30fps... on next gen hardware...
what a joke.

imt5581290d ago (Edited 1290d ago )

Well, it's a demo. I hope they will fix the perfomance issues until launch, ESPECIALLY BUMP UP THE RESOLUTION, at least on PS4.

Well, if EA choose 900p for both versions, i can't blame them.

CJDUNCAN1290d ago

exactly, it's a demo! The game looks and plays fantastically.

Exies71290d ago

Sadly, I had to cancel my preorder after playing the game. Mad props for releasing a demo, but it really felt like more of the same.

Audiggity1290d ago

I did the same thing... clocked about 2-3 hours in the demo to be 100% sure, I feel like their videos/information was very misleading.

Every Fight Night game since the first one feels more dynamic than this "next gen" MMA.

Didn't want to cancel my pre-order, I had high hopes.

Clover9041290d ago (Edited 1290d ago )

And this is why publisher's no longer put out demos. Between you and Audiggity, that's two preorder sales EA lost out on. Not saying it's bad that you guys aren't buying the game. If you guys didn't care for it, great, you just saved $60. But when people are scratching their heads as to why game companies are releasing fewer and fewer demos, this is why. From a business standpoint it just doesn't make sense.

bigbearsack1290d ago

Well, they should make a product thats worth it. I canceled the thought of purchase after playing this demo. From a business standpoint it makes no sense to sell garbage products.

Exies71290d ago

I get what you're saying but I've played all their previous games and they had BIG promises and hype towards how "different" this version was. I believed them... Then they released a demo, and it just looks prettier. It's practically the same game.

XxExacutionerxX1290d ago (Edited 1290d ago )

Being a Xbox One fan, and owning a PS4 as well. I played the demo on both consoles and the Ps4 does in fact look better between the two. On the Xbox One, I just would notice jagged edges on the fighters and on the people standing in the background. It still looks good on X1 and plays well. The Ps4 verison on the other hand, the jagged edge are gone and characters looked very close to life like.
I would recommend EA UFC on the Ps4, it will blow your mind how good the ghaphics are.

BX811290d ago

I'm the opposite. I downloaded both and thought both looked the same except the ps4 version colors seemed off a bit.

XxExacutionerxX1289d ago (Edited 1289d ago )

I make a good comment towards the PS4 and I get more Disagrees than Agrees... WHAT Are Xbox One fans only on this sites page...

They both do look great, but play the demo on both consoles, don't just look at the video.

PS4 verison changes by one or two frames, really...
I bet you wont notice

Also, the PS4 demo shows blood and the Xbox One demo does not. Thought that was weird.

BX811289d ago

Just a heads up, the xb1 version does show blood.

Clover9041290d ago

This is stupid. They both look great. End of story.

OrangePowerz1290d ago

Why is it stupid? Some people have both consoles so for them it's a way to decide what version they get.

Clover9041290d ago

I disagree. They are both so close in terms of graphics and performance that any difference is negligible. If you have both you are going to decide by your friends and which system they have, which controller you prefer while playing the demo, your preference of trophies or achievements, etc.

OrangePowerz1290d ago

The difference in Anti Aliasing is quite noticeable. That would be enough reason for me to pick one over the other.

CJDUNCAN1290d ago

they said the anti-aliasing is better on ps4 but the framerate is more consistent on the xbox one. So which do you prefer? A smoother looking game, or a smoother playing game? The choice is yours, just enjoy yourself.
