New Kinect for Windows is now available for pre-order, costs $199

If you've been jonesing to snag the new Kinect sensor for Windows, you can now get one -- well, almost. Microsoft has just made its latest Kinect for Windows available for pre-order for only $199.99 with the promise of shipment by July 2014 if you do so while supplies last. The idea behind the early release is to give developers a head start on building applications for the latest v2 technology, though there's nothing stopping regular consumers from getting in on the action as well. As a reminder, the new Kinect for Windows promises improved depth sensing, a wider field of view, 1080p resolution and more. So if you're tired of the Xbox One getting all the Kinect love, feel free to see what the Windows version has to offer at the source link below.

They can't seriously think that this is gonna sell well with a 200$ pricepoint.

johndoe112111236d ago

They have got to be out of their freaking minds. What the hell is wrong with microsoft?

Eonjay1236d ago

That is ... more than I would have guessed.

DevilOgreFish1236d ago (Edited 1236d ago )

"costs $199"

so it's true after all, kinect 2.0 split the price with the xbox one. $250 for xb1 and $250 for kinect. (launch pricing)

[Edit]

I'm probably wrong about the assumption, but kinect was indeed expensive.

DevilOgreFish1236d ago

I'm still not going to let this effect my E3, this is some interesting peace of info. but i'm more interested in the games at this point.

No_Limit1236d ago (Edited 1236d ago )

It is a marked up just like the original Kinect for Windows was sold for $250.
http://www.microsoftstore.c... It is there for a few people using it to develop and also include a software development kit (SDK) . It has nothing to due about how much the camera really cost to make or the console itself.

SniperControl1236d ago (Edited 1236d ago )

Wait what???

That's £118 in the UK, add in taxes and the usual price hike we get over here in blighty, we are looking at at least £140 - £150(roughly what i paid for the original kinect)

Total joke, the "dis-kinected" bundle is only £40 cheaper than the Titanfall bundle WITH kinect.

So MS will charge £140 for kinect stand alone, yet only take £40 from the bundle.

Get the f### outta here MS, what a total con job, you are taking the p###.

miyamoto1236d ago (Edited 1236d ago )

LOL!

M$ thinks throwing this bone to the PC Master Race is a better idea???

This will be interesting....

Volkama1236d ago

Wow, a lot of people seem to think this is intended as a gaming peripheral. I'm not sure I've ever come across a PC game that supported the first kinect, and that will probably be the case again with this one.

But it'll be used for other neat things.

Charybdis1236d ago (Edited 1236d ago )

They also reduced the pricing of the original kinect for windows from 249,99$ to 100$. Good to see that they priced kinect2 for windows 50$ lower than the pricing of the original kinect for windows, admittedly it was already reduced to about 200$ a last time I checked. Will be interesting to see what purposes (commercial displays, healthcare, pc mods) it will be used for and what the modding community will do with it.

"so it's true after all, kinect 2.0 split the price with the xbox one. $250 for xb1 and $250 for kinect. (launch pricing) "

That was just a crock of s**t spread by that "Anonymous Confirmed Xbox Dev" reddit account that MS uses to spread lies without corporate accountability.

Like the original Kinect for Windows, I'm tempted, but I'm not going to sit by and get price gouged. Unless they cut the Xbone to $300, I'm not buying a Kinect for $200.

What's the opposite for throwing money at the screen?

Sayburr1236d ago

Wow... does that mean the XBO without Kinect could actually be cheaper than $399 ??? I guess that $100 discount is for bundleing the XBO and Kinect.

jackanderson19851236d ago

pure assumption based on nada really... surely there'll be something extra with the kinect like a dev kit of some sort to allow easier tweaking and what not....

veegeeeffex1236d ago

This isn't aimed at you but rather the enthusiast crowd that is very willing to fork over this sort of cash for the opportunity to tinker a little bit with fancy hardware.

It's purely for that purpose. This will never be supported by any notable games.

Edward751236d ago

Plus bubble for you veegeeeffex

This is for people to mess around with in different ways on PC, really not much to do with gaming use.

threefootwang1236d ago

Wow - Despite the fact how unpopular Kinect is with some people MS are arrogant enough to sell it for an incredibly bloated price?

http://www.troll.me/images/...

Volkama1236d ago (Edited 1236d ago )

The first kinect for windows is still $250

Www.microsoftstore.com/store/ msusa/e n_US/pdp/Kinect-for-Windows/pr o ductID.253758600

As a minority of people here have already said, this is not being sold as a games peripheral.

XiSasukeUchiha1236d ago

WTF MS really, just really, who really buy this for $200!

rainslacker1236d ago

I'd buy it at that price point, but it's what I do, and would like to get a head start on making Kinect Libraries.

Unfortunately, it also appears that if you want to use this, you will also need to get the Kinect for Windows SDK 2.0, which has been priced at $399.

But yeah, I do think it's priced outside the hobbyist spectrum unless people are really serious about it.

I'm guessing with this that the X1 Kinect 2.0 won't work on the PC. Shame, because I would have gotten an X1 w/ Kinect as soon as the SDK became available(because I am OK buying the SDK). Then I could do my work on the PC, and play some games on the X1. I know earlier dev releases for Kinect for Windows SDK 2 was $400.

I find it odd. They make this expensive camera for PC. Charge devs $400 to use the SDK. And the software written to that SDK can only be used on PC. This means that distributing your software will require others on PC to have the Kinect...which is reasonable. But then they price the camera out of the regular users price point. Not really much of a point to try and develop software unless it's for specialized tasks.

Rainbowcookie1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

So in fact the price cut on the xbox one without kinect could be a lot more? nevermind its the sdk kit

M-M1236d ago

That's pretty much all I could say at this point.

Qrphe1236d ago

Kinect is pretty much never going to take on like MS wanted to and they know it.

ZodTheRipper1236d ago

I'm not exactly sure whether they know it ...otherwise it would've been priced better. They must think that there is a demand for this thing which is delusional to say the least.

Qrphe1236d ago

It's priced as well as they can price, it's a pretty high-end but useless piece of technology as far as gaming.

maniacmayhem1236d ago

I'm pretty sure the PC community will find other uses for the Kinect like they have already with the first Kinect.

The PC community used it for everything else BESIDES games and I am positive that they will use the Kinect 2 in the same way.

rainslacker1236d ago

True, but I was hoping they would do something to really push the gaming sphere on PC with Kinect. There are a lot of cool things that can be done with Kinect. Unfortunately, outside of industrial or commercial programs written for the original, the rest was all demo type software only seen by others with the same hardware and SDK's.

There is a ton of potential for Kinect on the PC because it's just a different market than consoles. The user base is much more diverse, and the chance that unique applications could be made on the consumer level are huge.

But at $200, it's not going to catch on with the mainstream. This severely limits the user base to commercial and industrial users, or hobbyists...which is exactly where it is now.

So basically we just get a more advanced version of what we already have. What's the point?

Having used the first Kinect for PC development, I find this highly disappointing.

snookiegamer1236d ago (Edited 1236d ago )

You gotta be kiddin me. MS have 'totally' lost it!!!

Kinect 2 (X1) is being sold pre-owned @CEX UK for a lowly £20.

C'mon, say it ain't so???
