Xbox's Phil Spencer Thinks Sony Will Have a Good E3: "Great Brand;" Challenges Pachter's Predictions

There have been conflicting predictions on the outcome of E3 next week. Some predict great things, while others expect a rather bland show. One of those that predicted a mediocre outcome is Wedbush Securities Analyst Michael Pachter, but Xbox Division head honcho Phil Spencer took it in stride, also expressing his positive expectations for Sony's E3.

Phil is very cool with the appreciation of his direct competitors. Very different from the faces of the XBox division of the past, who refused to acknowledge that Sony and Nintendo even existed, practically. I like him. He makes MS easy to support, and I actually expect some cool new games from MS due to Phil's focus on gamers.

Also, challenging Pachter over his guess that MS will mostly show the XB1 as a multimedia box seems right. MS has been all about "games, show the games" since Spencer took over, because they want to establish themselves as a viable core gamer option.

They won't backpedal on the gamers strategy at E3 -- multimedia was the Mattrick strategy last year.

Abriael1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

I honestly wonder how Pachter could predict that. I normally appreciate the guy (against all odds and all the hate he receives) because a lot of things he says make sense from a business standpoint, but absolutely *everything* points to the opposite of his prediction this time, and it's not like he could have missed the signals.

eezo1235d ago

if you have watch the patch-attack, pachter again and again said these are not PREDICTIONS but ASSUMPTIONS.... you making so much FUSS.... Pachter's E3 Assumption Week begins! Because predictions are for babies

Ulf1235d ago

@ eezo, yes they are assumptions, but they're kinda bad ones, given public knowledge of MS' recent strategy.

Abriael1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

Lol. Oh boy... Those semantics.

NatureOfLogic_1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

I like Phil Spencer for Xbox, but being very reactive to anything negative Xbox One really comes off as unprofessional and damage control. I know Xbox One is in a bad position atm, but remaining silent and delivering at E3 would be a better approach imo. I think this is one thing that MS can learn from Sony. Also, respect to Phil Spencer for his positive Sony comment.

Kenshin_BATT0USAI1235d ago

I don't think Pachter is saying anything he claims cluelessly.

And he has a point, general media will be there and they don't care about gaming news(ironically enough given the industry growth). MS has a strategy to focus on gamers, sure, but they definitely WON'T ignore the other million things they designed the X1 to do.

mikeslemonade1235d ago

Sony will win this E3 because they have been the most quiet of the three console holders but also have the most developers.

darthv721235d ago

I have stated before that the world of these companies is very different than the world of the fans.

These corporate guys have no animosity towards each other. Nintendo, sony and Ms all have respect for each other and want to see each other move the industry forward in a positive way. they may make their own blunders and take jabs but it is nothing like what the fans do.

The fans (more specifically fanboys) take things to the extreme in the name of their platform of choice and in turn, tend to try and ruin the experience for the rest of those who are level headed.

Visiblemarc1235d ago

@Kenshin_BATT0USAI

Ask yourself, does he even have a 10% accuracy rating on his "predictions?"

Pachter needs to find a new line of work.

Boody-Bandit1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

I really wish MS, Sony, Nintendo and all the devs and publishers would dial down all these E3 expectations.

What I would like to see from all of them is, "we are excited and very pleased with what we are going to present at this years E3."

That's it. Full stop.

They should all strive to make us excited "after" we see what they have to offer us, the consumer / gamer.

Hyperbole and sensationalism = (not always but usually) leads to disappointment / not able to live up to the hype / expectations.

With that said. I do think this E3 is one of the more important E3's in a very long time. We are in an odd flux right now and the future of gaming, especially this new generation, depends on a forward moving vision and not just more of the same / stagnation.

Most of all I want to see the developers move towards this generation and if you're going to build cross platform titles do them separately and don't just give us the same game with better visuals. Than we are stuck with last generation game play mechanics in a prettier wrapper.

UltimateMaster1235d ago

Why do people believe Patcher is beyond me...

Phil Spencer is the right man for the job to lead Xbox.

Sony will have an awesome E3, they'd better since they have movie theaters reserved for this event.

Bigpappy1235d ago

I would guess Pachter is right 1:1000 on his predictions. So that is almost the same as always wrong. But what I am not guessing at, is that he know nothing about gaming and the needs of gamers.

showtimefolks1235d ago

Abriael

he said he was making an assumption not a prediction. Its patcher's opinion on this matter. If past E3's are any clue than ms has a long history of wasting time talking about non gaming stuff at E3

so does sony too

choujij1234d ago (Edited 1234d ago )

"I don’t think Sony is intimidated. Sony is great a brand and a strong team." -Phil Spencer.

Hey TrueFan1 and Georgeenoob, did you guys read that? Since you believe everything Phil says, I guess we can all safely assume that you believe this as well now. lol

Don't forget Phil Spencer was part of the original Xbox One with Don Mattrick, Major Nelson, Medhi, et al.

What is this reputation management that Phil Spencer have nothing to do with original DRM, 24/7 security check, always online dealwithit, anti used games and anti-consumer Xbox One?

They are just shuffling faces of the same people.

FriedGoat1235d ago

Yeah, You also have to remember the head of microsoft studios made Rare focus on terrible Kinect games instead of real games. Guess who that was... oh wait, It was Phil Spencer.

user56695101234d ago

forget microsoft is a corporation and they do this with a lot of their products. im never going to buy on but to say that the ceo views really out way the goals of the board is not realistic. they shuffle people because just like politics people think the face have the power to control everything.

Kayant1235d ago

True the show will be game focused but I still believe there will be at least a 10 minute segment on original programming just for they to give an update and finalise their plans because unlike last year there is only E3. Also I expect there to be more game demo with Phil talking about having less suits on stage.

That should make for a great E3 as long as the game section is good.

Been gaming for over 30yrs, and even though I lean more towards Sony I believe all 3 companies will have great E3 showings because in the end it's always has, and always be about the games.

I have a PS4 and Wii U, but I do want an X1 down the road now that its more to me liking I'm just waiting for 1 or 2 more games that intrigue me like Quantum Break has.

So come on MS show me some games that are not just FPS and the usual suspects. I know both Sony and Nintendo will have what I want so I'm not worried there.

truefan11235d ago

I like this approach, Phil sounds very confident in the MSFT E3 show, he isn't worried about what anyone else does. One of my sources told me why, because MSFT is going NUCLEAR at E3! Also MSFT is bringing the GAMES!!

mrpsychoticstalker1235d ago

Exactly, the guy has a lot of confidence. I'm sure this E3 is going to be one to remember.

ziggurcat1235d ago

@ truefan:

misterx is not a source, so don't pretend that you have an "insider."

choujij1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

@TF1

My sources say your sources are made up.

xtremeimport1235d ago

MS hasn't had an exciting E3 in so many years, I cant even remember the last time I was excited after one of their conferences. I think maybe the Reach teaser?

Every year they hype it like they have a whole bunch of good stuff to show...then its always Kinect focused garbage. Last year was boring, the only thing saving it was the announcement of Ps4 pricing and design.

I'll with hold my judgement until after I see everything. Should be a good year for everyone though..lots of potential.

incredibleMULK1235d ago

well said. bubbles up. Yeah mattrick was an idiot. nelson, mattrick, balmer, bunch of numbnutz. I did like the interface and the online of the 360 but all i had to play was gears, call of duty, battlefield, and the occasional game of forza. Luckily i prefered crysis 2 and 3 on 360. My ps3 kept me busy big time. I think Spencer will give us a reason to own a new xbox.

NewZealander1235d ago

totally agree, phil spencer is the best thing to happen to XBOX in...well ever.

he seems to know exactly what gamers want, its a shame he wasn't in charge of X1 from the beginning!

Phil is the perfect guy to lead xbox and he is doing all the right things moving forward. Cant wait to see what he shows us at E3.

hellzsupernova1235d ago

yeah I could not agree more, I just hope he pulls through on the PC support. Or i may just buy an xbox one eventually

F4sterTh4nFTL1235d ago

Does anyone actually take Pachter seriously regarding anything games related?

Abriael1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

A lot of things he says make sense and turns out true (see Kinectless Xbox One, how much flak did he get for that?). This time around I wonder what he drank.

choujij1235d ago (Edited 1235d ago )

I disagree Abriael. He got flak from stupid fanboys who believed their system was selling like hotcakes. That's a far cry from him being called out for some of the nonsense he spews.

AngelicIceDiamond1235d ago

@Faster I'm not to fond of the guy myself but @Abriel is right Pachter's been pitching a Kinectless X1 bundle as early as late last year.

And one of the first anylst's to do so.

He turned out to be right about that.

Ipunchbabiesforfun1235d ago

Everyone in the world was predicting a Kinectless Xbox One lol. The gamers wanted it too!

liquidhalos1235d ago

To be fair there were tonnes of gamers right here on N4G that predicted a kinectless sku well before patcher. It was a no brainer.

Volkama1235d ago

But we have official confirmation that Patcher is Phil Spencer's friend. I think that means we can start tagging every Patcher Predication with the term "Insider", which will add validity to his words and possibly make them come true.

Prime1571235d ago

The guy does have access to more business workings than we do... look, Phil said he was meeting with him later in his tweet, which is more than any of us here on n4g.

I listen to pachter, but I form my own predictions our just wait for something tangible. Besides, he speaks more to potential investors and shareholders than us.

Glad Phil is respecting his competition. Sony will have a great splash at E3.

"Thanks, XBOX team is all working hard. There is a renewed sense of belief we are on a good path here, good vibe in the halls."

Sounds like Phil will announce something that will put Xbox in an even more positive light.

I'm pumped I can't wait for E3.

Dannycr1235d ago

I hope we can all learn from this behavior and stop the non-sense of flamewars. They have something to lose by praising the competition, yet, they recognize quality and love for the craft, so... why can't we do it?
