Should we be disappointed with delays?

Of course. It's only natural to be disappointed about something you have been eagerly waiting when it gets delayed. But at the same time, it's important to remember that it's a good thing, and that the game you can't wait for will be better off in the end because of the delay.

I'm disappointed that Batman has been delayed...but i know it will be a better game when it finally releases. Devs know what they're doing, they know if they're game isn't ready for us.

I think the devs will put some shine on the game, but I theorize Batman got pushed back at the publisher's request. WB Interactive already had a game scheduled to launch in October (Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor) and they wouldn't want to cannibalize sales of that.

It was a smart move, because I may be buying Shadows of Mordor now!

Unfortunately game delays has been with us for generations. One of my favorite companies from the past, Working Designs was notorious for not meeting release dates.

Of course the initial reaction is disappointment because you're exited about the release. At the same time though, I'd much prefer a slight delay over releasing a game before it's done and 'patching in the rest' after release quick money grabs, because 'we know it sells and they'll buy it no matter what' deadlines and heavy-handed publisher techniques.

The only delays that bother me are when things turn into Vaporware, a la The Last Guardian and Agent, especially when they just get pawned on different development teams who don't give a sh*t like what happened to Duke Nukem..

All of these devs just got a whole new playground to play around in so if they're making a game and just realize 'wow there's so much more we can do with this, we can make it better than we thought and fine-tune details', that's freaking cool we should embrace it as long as they aren't trying to blow smoke in the wind.

It depends on the situation; if it's an actual, legit bug or some sort of game-breaking issue then I can see it. What companies need to do is announce, provide progress updates, then when the came is close to completion then have a release window.

I don't hate delays, but I hate the overreaction of the fan base and conspiracy theories. The only time I hate delays is when you promise an exclusive deal, then "delay" to make it on a competitors console; don't get me wrong I do believe in everyone enjoying the experience, however don't promote "exclusive" knowing damn well someone else is getting it eventually.

I'm actually more disappointed when a game is knowingly announced too early, bringing about delays that many of the publishers/developers involved knew were inevitable. Some delays are due to unforeseen circumstances, others are a result of the hype train getting started sooner than necessary.

Yes and no. While it sucks that a game is being delayed, it's also good to know that you aren't buying a piece of crap for your hard earned money, well, hopefully.

However, it's the publishers job to market and advertise the game. If they do it too early, then it builds a ton of hype, but the game doesn't come out for a long time and people forget about it. If they do it too late, you're thinking, "OH wow! Already?!"

For me, it's disappointing when they give a release date, or release window and then gets delayed with no real timeline for release. Like The Order 1886. It goes from Holiday 2014 to early 2015. It could be Holiday 2015 for all we know. Driveclub went from release title to early 2014, to a whole year delay. I just wish they announced release dates once the game is completed and they're just polishing it for release.
