With Square's recent financial troubles and bad sales can we say they're no longer the king of JRPG's?
A long time ago. I think Atlus and Level 5 have been making better JRPGs. SE seem to focus more on giving people a cinematic experience rather than a meaningful JRPG.
You took the words out of my mouth, sir. They had been dethroned since the fusion with Enix. Long long time ago.
I'll second rodia's claim that you took the word out of my mouth. Altus and Level 5 are miles ahead of that J-pop sludge that SE is mired in. Have a bubble from me.
Agreed, SqEn needs to step up their game
I would like to nominate Bandai Namco as well for their Tales series. I do hope Nomura redeems Square Enix with FFXV
Don't care. Want FFXV.
More like abdicated. Dethroned suggests active effort and replacement, and while Level 5 and NIS are the current go-tos, they're more traditionalist than even current Square. Are just more competent and are making games with intent to entrain players, not advertise jewelry fashion or energy drinks.
As an avid fan its hard to admit but i personally think Atlus have taken that crown.
I'd have to disagree, while square has had it's missteps, atlus is far from king of JRPG's. The JRPG's they publish are way better than the games they actually make themselves.
Well each to there own :) I adore Final Fantasy (having a great time on ARR). They have just lost their magic they once had in my opinion. Hopefully XIV can recapture it and move forward positively. EDIT: And yes i'm aware Final Fantasy isn't there only series. It is however their flagship series.
I respect you opinion, i'm loving FFXIV: ARR as well. I agree Square Enix has had it's blunders the past couple of years, but i think they're really committed this gen.
Ever since Square abandoned games like Final Fantasy Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Legend Of Mana, Vagrant Story and every Final Fantasy up to number 7, their RPGs have been lacking in content, depth, and gameplay. It's like Square abandoned "story telling" in favor of making "action" rpgs and the quality of their games slowly collasped. In an attempt to cater to every type of gamer, Square forgot the type of gamer that once had them at the forefront of a genre. And it seems that Square has learned a few things and tried to reverse this trend with FF IVX. Making games like Thief will do nothing for Square's reputation, hopefully Square will get back to it's roots.
Absolutely well said. I couldn't agree more.
Yes. But the throne remains empty. No other JRPG developer is doing much, either.
