"I love them, but let’s be honest with ourselves here: Eastern RPGs have been built on some of the silliest tropes in gaming. Many of them were built out of necessity, and now really do nothing but to serve as archaic monuments to a time when they were innovative gameplay design. Compared to most of the RPGs being made by western developers, JRPGs are a shining beacon of light. Western styled action RPGs usually are poorly designed and the stories are confusing and chaotic. I'm still trying to think of one action RPG designed by western developers, none come to mind.
Mass Effect 2/3, Deux Ex series, Diablo, and pretty much every Bethesda RPG are all action. THats just off the top of the head though. We do more Action RPGs than we get credit for. Its just alot of them look the same. Especially in the 80's where everything looked like Ultima, or the 90's where everything looked like Diablo.
