Unfortunately one of the series’ best features is completely ruined in Nintendo’s latest iteration of the franchise; battle mode
I don't understand what made them change it. People loved it in the past games. I don't see why they would change something which people liked. If they wanted to add something new they could of had both. The old battle mode and the new one for variation.
I said this before but i honestly think it was to get this game out sooner. The game is incredibly polished everywhere else so its still puzzling. We should voice our dissatisfaction, maybe we'll get a DLC with proper arena courses.
It works fine online when there's 12 of you playing it. I don't know why they changed it, but the rest of the game is so damn good i don't see why it's that much of an issue.
i was never one for battle mode, but i do realize it's a nice diversion. saying "well it doesnt matter because the rest of the game is so good", is missing the point. That's like if a supplementary but still widely played game mode in COD or BF was integrally changed for the worse. In those games' communities people would complain and hopefully a change would be made.
That's not the best way to look at it... "everything else is good, so it's okay". Yes, everything else is good, which it's supposed to be, but that doesn't mean battle mode shouldn't be good... especially with so many games in the series. Nintendo knows the expectations. Nintendo has it down to a formula, which they never deviate from... so this is either a case of rush to market, or they plan on DLC (paid or not) map packs in the future.
trust me when i tell you its purely because they are planning to add a dlc pack which will have the traditional battle mode maps! This way they know the majority of mario kart 8 players WILL BUY THE DLC! purely for the battle mode arena maps! its annoying but i bet my left testicle on it.
To be fair I think the majority of people rarely if ever played battle mode and they already nerfed it in the wii version, I think this has been a long time coming, it's steadily become less and less of a focus and I wouldn't be surprised if battle mode was removed from the next game entirely. It seems that they must have run out of time and prioritized the racing over the battle mode. They knew that they couldn't delay this game and that's good. It bodes well for smash bros. They might add more arenas in an update or dlc, so we'll just have to wait on that (it'd most likely be revealed at e3).
DLC most likely. Nintendo isn't anyti- DLC anymore. They just released Season Pass for Mario Golf to download 6 more courses so I could see them offering up a new cup or some ACTUAL Battle Mode arenas. Block Fort in HD!
A little concerning, but I would like to put some hours into the mode to make a fair judgement
I hope they add the old battle mode later.
Rarely ever played battle mode, it's all about the online racing for me, so not really much of a big deal. I know people will try and make a bigger issue out of this tho as it's Nintendo, where everyones quick to criticize but slow to give credit. Oh well I say lets forget the bitchy moaners. To all the real gamers I'll see you on the track next Friday.
Nope, some of us would just like the old Battle mode to return and feel its absence is a pretty disappointing omission. It was a lot of fun in previous titles, and some people even preferred it over the racing itself (I played it about 30-40% of the time in both Mario Kart 64 and Crash Team Racing when I was younger - it was insanely fun split-screen). It's a big part of Mario Kart for a lot of people, and its also seen as a very basic feature. Nintendo has gotten plenty of credit and praise for this game, so I don't know what you're moaning about. Insinuating that people aren't ''real gamers'' for wanting the Battle Mode in the game, or even not owning a Wii U, is one of the saddest things I've seen in while. You seem a bit brainwashed.
Mario Kart battle mode may not be for you, but for those of us that have enjoyed it since the original I think it'd be nice if Nintendo put in the effort to create proper battle arena maps. I guess that's enough "bitchy moaning" for me right now.
Imagine if Nintendo sold a $5 DLC pack for characters (Boo, Dry Bones, Nabbit, Parakoopa, Bowser Jr) $5 DLC for tracks (1-Up cup with 5 courses w/mirror) and a $5 Battle Mode arena pack (4 classic, 4 new) Nintendo would both make a bunch of money and satisfy fan wishes. The right amount of content at the right price would be a fair business decision if you ask me. Of course I would prefer if Battle Arenas were already in the game, but extra content would be a wise decision
Keep your DLC crap models away from my console! And keep it on your Paystation 4 and Xfraud One.
you do realize that Mario Golf is adding over 100 courses with 5 planned dlc packs right? They're doing it right, cheap and worth the purchase.
@Dehnus, Chill out son! No need to get angry, it is only videogames at the end. LOL I don't think you will see many DLC on Wii simply with the fact that it only has a maxed drive of 32gb. You can always add in an external drive but I don't see many Wii owners doing that as most of them are traditional insert games and play folks.
Battle mode was always my favorite T_T
What a nitpicking pedant journalist, hes seriously going mad over balloon battle being changed up a bit. Will I miss the classic? sure but that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to give this new one a try. does this ruin the game? hell no. the improvements of MK8 still out weight its faults (which are zero to none). I swear people always find a reason to argue.
I personally don't care for battle mode, and if battling on the standard tracks freshens it up I'm all for it. One thing I like is the prospect of being able to actually drive the standard tracks however you want, which means you'd actually be able to do some exploration of areas you may not necessarily go to. Think Peaches castle on Royal Raceway from mario kart 64.
Good job were in the modern ages, DLC And patches ;)
So it wasn't removed, just some maps where removed.... WOW enter the Butthurt! As seriously this is just making excuses to not buy a Wii U. Had they put it in people here would have found something else to nag about like... "When they add to the game library Metroid Prime 4.. that is when I'll buy it". Only to bitch and moan about something trivial like "WHAT!? No bikini happy fun code like in DOA? NO BUY!"
Wow people complain about everything Nintendo does. If they would have put in a simple battle mode then they would say the battle mode could have been done better. people they did it like this for a reason. I haven't owned a MK game in a while so I am less biased I have a feeling that once people play they will like it but it's funny how some people jump on Nintendo for changing the formula but they fail to give recognition that this is the reason they are able to keep their games fresh because they are not afraid to switch up the formula. People lets stop relying on the views of others to influence what we think of a company or games be your own person make your own decision.
I don't know why everyone is complaining so much. Yes, I really liked arenas. But to be honest, I almost NEVER played battle mode. The new battle mode seems interesting, and I'm 100% willing to give it a try. I used to play hide and seek with my cousins on our DSs in regular courses and that was a blast, so I'm thinking this could also be very cool.
Fair enough if you never played it much but for a lot of people especially playing multiplayer on Mario Kart 64 battle mode is all they would play.
All we want is Block Fort!! Fingers crossed for N46 battle arenas DLC!
Nintendo.....why you never do anything different. I hate you! 1 week later Nintendo.....why did you change something. I hate you!
Not sure how this could be taken as a good change...
Pretty sure its coming as a DLC.
The only time I cared about battle mode was in mission mode in Mario Kart DS, in those battles versus bosses. In any other MK, even when playing with friends, I completely ignore battle modes.
I had an interesting thought the other day. I had expected them to do some asymmetrical multiplayer modes...But they didn't obviously. Maybe they're going to make a full-fledged downloadable expansion with all sorts of asymmetrical and traditional multiplayer modes. I think they could easily make an entire game out of that, much less a simple expansion.
I think the old battle mode as dlc would be awesome. imagine some of the set pieces with anti gravity at the core would be awesome.
This, imo, is the one flaw in an otherwise diamond-standard game. However, there's a bit of a silver lining to this; the Yoshi's Valley track has enough split routes to still feel close to the traditional kind of battle arena that mk veterans are accustomed to. If they never add traditional arenas through a patch or through dlc, then this course on its own will act as a popular and acceptable stand-in.
It's unbelievable how many disagrees ppl are getting over telling their unbiased opinion. It's like you can't comment negatively about anything unless it's PC or Xbox One....it's getting a little tiresome. Face it, Nintendo screwed up on the Battle mode, but that doesn't mean they ruined the game or that the game is bad...FAR from it. I'm still buying the game, and although I'm not big on online, I'm a HUGE couch gamer with my friends and gf. I already tried the game and I honestly think it's a 9/10 game. I would give it a perfect 10 if battle mode wasn't so boring compared to Ds/3Ds....I did wish they added some of double dashes features though...I think that was my fav Mario kart because it was so out there and they took a very good risk:)
