With the posting of the latest financial results by Nintendo it's pretty evident that the performance of the Wii U isn't stellar, but according to Kadokawa Managing Director and Enterbrain President Hirokazu Hamamura there's still hope.
well sack that miamoto guy for a start, that guy thinks its still the 90s
i said his name right?
I think you meant Iwata and yes he should be fired for those awful financial results by Nintendo. ;)
It's spelled Miyamoto, and you obviously mean Iwata...
I think you mean Iwata. Miyamoto is the last person they should fire.
Firing Iwata would also be a terrible idea.
>not knowing who miyamoto is how old are you?
talk about little respect about the industry eh?
Lol, Miamoto..... Lol I'm not even going to bother trying to argue with this. I'm too busy laughing. You just started here and you're already making a fool of yourself.
You are secretly Iwata. It explains alot.
LOL. Man, you just made a fool of yourself in front of all the Nintendo fans. Satoru Iwata is the CEO and that is the person everyone is demanding to be removed. Shigeru Miyamoto is the legendary creator of some of the most critically acclaimed and selling videogames including Mario, Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong. Furthermore, you spelled his name wrong and made it sound like a girl's name: Mia-moto.LOL.
Miyamoto is responsible for some of the biggest franchises ever created. You probably meant Iwata. But he is actually smarter than people give him credit for. He is a little shitty on the whole marketing aspect of things and not locking in on third parties. But he has had some very innovative ideas. You can see that over this short time he is getting a handle on this millennium.
I think you mean Iwata. Miyamoto makes games while Iwata is the CEO of the firm.
Iwata did make games for Nintendo until he become CEO, though.
like i would recommend a client to get a ps4 over a wiiU ha haa haaaa ide get fired !
Yea but also, we here in the US are WAY too quick to give up on something for what is " new , bigger better". It's pathetic really. We've become a bunch of "know-it-alls". Everybody has become an "expert" on everything.
We're a wasteful nation is what we've become! Even how quickly Congress wanted to let GM, Ford and Chrysler sink. All of those companies are doing much better now, but what would it have been like if they weren't given a chance to survive.
WiiU is dead. Time to move on Nintendo.
WiiU has been gathering giant dust bunnies that finally need to be fought off as 1 of only 2 games I will ever get is coming. Mario kart and Smash bros are the only games worth while on this system. I bought the WiiU for xmass a year and a half ago for my kids and they have ignored it all this time. But competitive gaming in my house is back.
If it wasn't for SMB3 for the virtual console my WiiU would've been collecting dust since DKTF... Oh but that doesn't stop fanboys from saying that X1 or the PS4 has no games smh! Nintendo really needs to ramp up their first party ip's by hiring more people. ;)
PS4 has no games. Time to do something new, Sony. See? Anyone can make an incorrect and retarded post.
People will sing Sony's praises all day. But here's the facts. The Wii U has sold more in Japan then the PS4 has. You know, their home country. The PS4 hasn't even breached one million in Japan. Why? No games. PS4 only sells twice as much as the Wii U in Japan every week right now,(moving away from facts now) a sales gap I don't see it maintaining once Mario Kart comes out at the end of May. And then of course XBONE doesn't sell at all outside of collector's importing because M$ isn't the smartest company in the world and won't appeal to Japan. One of the biggest gaming demographics.
Just like the article says, it's too early to give up on it. That's like giving up on the Titanic as it's sinking so you can get on a lifeboat- oh wait people don't like to sink to the bottom with the ship. Never mind.
In a slump? A slump implies it once had good sales, which it never did
Its moved 3 million in a the first few months.
Over 6 million total sales with a nearly 70% attach rate for NSMBU does not equal Good apparently.
NSMBU is bundled with the system...
@ Knushwood Prove that those bundles are the ones that have lent to the attach rate and not that people bought it separately, and you'll have a point.
When did Nintendo lose it's sense of direction? The motion activated controls are one thing, but they need to realize that graphical power and 3rd party titles are needed in this day and age. Saying that the Wii U is more powerful than a 360 really doesn't mean much when your opponents are the PS4 and the XB One. Mario and Zelda are great games, but do they really expect to keep a console afloat on first party titles alone?
Well. The wii u graphics are wonderful. They are good enough for me and 6 million+ other people. Nintendo doest need crazy weird horsepower to create masterpieces. I agree though that they should do something to secure third party support. Market it a little better(or at all). The wii u has a lot of potential. They kind of are keeping afloat with 1st parties alone. They are in profit mode currently. I think things aRe going to look up soon enough. But that wont stop the hate for some reason. I don't understand why people think their opinions are so important. Like they need to give a giant multi billion dollar company business advice. We all have a right to our opinions. But it doest make anything better. Not a shot at you, I agree on what you have to say. Im just waiting for some nintendo love. In the dark. Alone. Wont be long. E3!
Idk...1 1/2 years to sell 6 million units...and their best selling title has only moved just shy of 4 million units. There's not a lot to inspire confidence in this console. Now, with drooping sales and rumors spiking over a new console, it seems that Nintendo is in damage control mode. If they don't get their priorities in-line with what the majority of today's gamer wants, then they may end up going the way of Sega. It would be a real shame if that were to happen.
LOL THATS SO FUNNY he must be smoking mushrooms these days
Yeah, smoking them in his shroom pipe. Cause thats how you do shrooms. In a shrong
Lol bubs up. Funny
Too early? It's been over a year. The 3 d's made a comeback months after.
I remember when people kept saying give it a year, now it's changed to wait till Mario U or Zelda U comes out. ;)
Please sell your WiiU, we're tired of seeing you in Nintendo related articles!
Why do you have one?
and how long did it take the ps3 to bounce back again?..or how about that vita..thing?? -_-
Ps3 took 2 years. The only difference was that it had full support of 3rd parties and it Sony first party studios gave it their all. And it didn't have a tablet as a controller. Vita? Vita is struggling to survive and it's counter part the ps4 has sold like hotcakes. Your point?
@danny818 I think his point is that the PS3 took 2ish years to bounce back, the Wii U could do the same. It will probably never reach 50 million sales, but it could still do better than what it's doing now. Your point about the gamepad? It's actually good. If Sony ever came out with an optional tablet controller (and used it it well) I think it would sell. Like the Vita thing, except with even better functionality and cheaper. The wii u is struggling to survive (like the vita) and the 3ds has sold like hotcakes (like the PS4) Should Sony give up on the Vita? I don't think so. Should Nintendo give up on the Wii U? No. I don't think so either.
i find it funny you bring up " counterparts" because the Wii Us counterpart is selling even better than hot cakes lol ;) Anyway, my point is that even with little to no third party support nintendo is already about to bounce back. they now make a profit with every Wii U sold..now RIGHT before the release of one of their best selling franchises followed up by games like Bayonette 2, SSB4, X, Hyrule warriors, third party games like watch dogs, and sonic boom, indie games like Dream fall chapters, and project cars...ALL IN 2014!!! lol..you dont think those games will sell consoles and in turn making nintendo more money?? Yeah, I think nintendo already has their their come back...its starts on May 30th you gonna be there? ;)
Yea possibly. It's do or die son.
I'm going to get a lot of disagrees from the Nintendo faithful but this is simply stating the truth Nintendo has a lot to think about when making their new system I truly don't believe they can live with the likes of Mario,Zelda,Kirby, metroid, and so on anymore people have been burnt out already and don't go defending them the proof is in the pudding there is a reason wiiu sales are so bad, the last Mario game I played was sunshine on the GameCube that long ago I've grown up and I like completely new experiences I know new Mario games have entirely new gameplay but still it is tiring maybe not for u but for a whole lot of people it is. The casual fan the one that fueled the wiis success they are getting the same experiences now from their phones and tablets and that is going to kill Nintendo if they don't get it right
well every other realistic post here is getting mass disagrees so you may as well get a bunch of disagree too lol
The definition of realistic must have changed since the last time I saw it. All I'm seeing are the same false mantras that Nintendo has been hammered with for over a decade.
Hit the nail on the head!
They are thinking about their next system, and pretty much every Mario game they release sells millions still, so I don't see your point.
I get what your saying. Thats totally fine. But you cant get a nintendo experience on aphone. Unless you are using an emulator. Not a single mobile game has kept my interest for more than a couple weeks if that qnd those games were angry birds when I bought my very first smartphone and super hexagon.
The thing about your post that's irritating is when you say you grew up and need new experiences! It's people like you that buy the annual CoD's(insert annual franchise). It's fine if you don't like Mario, Metroid or Zelda any longer, but to try and belittle them at the same time by just being the same old games. Just compare the last 3 console Mario & Zelda games to the last 3 God of Wars or Uncharted games. I can guarantee that the Nintendo games are at least trying to offer something new with each installment. Could Nintendo use some new IP's along side of their mainstays, absolutely! But then again they're already doing that as well, you've probably never bothered to play any of them. I wish people who think they know the types of games that Nintendo should be making would come out and say what they really want. That's for Nintendo to just mirror Sony's games and what would be the unique thing in doing that! Here's some hypocrisy for you. The same people that say they are tired of Mario, Zelda and Metroid are the same people in every "Doomed Nintendo" article wanting them to become a 3rd party or Sony exclusive... Now how does that make any sense?
Well his premise may be wrong in that maybe people still do love Mario enough to keep those games going, but his points regarding the casuals and ipads / mobile games cutting heavily into nintendos market is still valid. and I played SMB wii and no it was not vastly different from what I remembered. Nintendo has a real and serious problem right now, talking about how great the wii was or how many copies mario kart recently sold won't change that. The discussion should be what are the issues and what are the solutions, not the blind rage defense replies that usually accompany these articles. WiiU sales are beyond bad, worse than gamecube, some have predicted worse than Saturn!!! that is the discussion at hand. I love nintendo, they are a great company, but man they need solutions.
@ck1x look I'm not trying to offend and say that Nintendo games are for kids far from it they just need new ips I love playing Pokemon on my phone and I'm 26 I meant that as one grows up they get tired of what they experience as a kid it's a fact I'm eating differently, I'm watching different TV shows, hell I'm getting a new sleep schedule as I stated above I know Nintendo refreshes its gameplay for all their core games but my point still stands you can agree with me or not I just feel that this time the doom and gloom articles you try so hard to ignore might actually come true, to answer your last point I'll paint it as painfully true as I can people are willing to get those titles that Nintendo offers for their Xbox or ps4 because they add nice variety to their portfolios but those same people are not and I repeat are not going to buy hardware from Nintendo for minimal software. Point I would buy all of Nintendo games on my console but I won't buy a Nintendo console for their games I can live without them. I hate COD I hate madden and I hate every genere that gets milk to death I play lots of indies and new ips
So, Mario doesn't matter because you haven't bought a Mario game since Sunshine. Gotcha. I guess I'll just disregard the more than 30 million people that bought Mario Kart Wii, or the more than 20 million that bought New Super Mario Bros Wii, or the more than 4 million that bought the Wii U one (despite the console having a install base of barely 6 million), etc. Yeah, people don't care about Mario at all.
I just wanted to add that he could have at least ended his Mario playing experience on SM64 or the Galaxy games. Sunshine is considered by the majority of Nintendo fans as one of the worst in the series! I would never judge the rest of the games by that game alone.
I haven't been convinced enough to warrent a purchase from Nintendo anymore since the GameCube i loved all the Mario's from the nes to the n64 and their were a lot of titles I remember my favorite cartridge for my SNES was Mario all stars which contained a lot of Mario games I'm not bashing just to bash I'm bashing with a point and you can say this and that, that Mario games are mind blowing and u know what I believe you but I just cant purchase a system for a few games I cant. Want to know how bad of a Nintendo fanboy I was I remember when the ps1 first came out and how one of the kids at my school got it I remember getting a lot of my friends to pick on him for getting a weak consle a console that used disks that could brake easily and only had two controller ports compared to four for the 64 and I remember dropping golden eye on floor and saying look it didn't break can u do that with your disk? So don't lecture me on what I myself enjoy I've lived it and I'm just sharing my opinion
I know your trying to make a point, but your lack of punctuation hurt my head. Here are some fullstops please go back and insert them into your post so I can work out what you are trying to say. Thanks .............
You just spewed a lot of bullshit that has absolutely nothing to do with your original post. Here, let me refresh your memory: "I truly don't believe they can live with the likes of Mario,Zelda,Kirby, metroid, and so on anymore people have been burnt out already and don't go defending them the proof is in the pudding there is a reason wiiu sales are so bad, the last Mario game I played was sunshine on the GameCube" See? You said people in general don't care about these franchises. I listed several examples of Mario games that sold like hotcakes, thus proving you wrong. The funny thing is, you're trying to pass YOUR personal opinion, YOUR personal experience, as the absolute truth. If you don't like Ninty games anymore, that's fine! I perfectly understand and respect that. But stop with the falacious arguments, you're not speaking for the masses here.
So when IS it time to give up on it?
When the time-and-again proven system-sellers don't do anything.
That's going to take a while, since a lot of Nintendo's titles prove to be Evergreen titles that people pick up slowly over time and eventually turn into games that everyone who has the system looks into, in the long run.
When its time for new console, whih will be in about 3 more years.
Agree. Nintendo Console Cycles are 5 years. So in 3 more years a new console will be out, and it hopefully will be more powerful than PS4 and X1, which will have much longer console cycles. 6-8 years like last gen? This will give Nintendo the most powerful console on the market for a few years ahead of Sony and MS next versions. One can only dream though, my crystal ball is cloudy.
When it's had it's full cycle. Nintendo shouldn't give up on it, if only to give an aura of confidence and to not p*ss of their consumers. I don't think the wiiu will ever do particularly well compared to the ps4, but I do think nintendo could still make a tidy profit on it. The attach rate for the console is around 5 games per console and you have games like new super mario bros u which is owned by two thirds of the player base. That's actually pretty impressive for this point in it's life cycle and considering the fact that they stop making a loss on hardware after one game (probably now two after price drops) is bought this means that their main losses are mainly from manufacturing which is merely a case of overestimating demand. If nintendo is smart and scales down production then they could easily still make a profit this generation. Obviously it wouldn't be ideal but a similar strategy kept them afloat during the gamecube era. Then again the console's sales could pick up considerably with games like mario kart and zelda. I suppose we just need to wait till e3 to see what their strategy is moving forward.
@wonderfulmonkeyman ~ Exactly my point.
Nintendo can't give on it till they sell off the already manufactured wiiu systems and components. Nintendo is likely going to have to take a loss on the wii u as a whole because even 299 isn't going to cut it for the general gaming audience. They need to figure what is better sitting on millions of unsold wii u's or having a intelligently determined price drop to clear out excess inventory. I say sell of all the existing already manufactured wii u's then cut the gamepad from the sku's and make it a add on like move. But i expect countless disagrees from people who value the gamepad more than the actual games. Sorry but nintendo already gave the impression of giving up on it long ago.
A slump suggests a decrease from success or some higher point, the Wii U never had a peak to slump from...It's more just failed to gain momentum. Sony as a company overall is in a slump, xbox division is in a slump, Nintendo as a company is in a slump, Wii U however, is failing.
You Sonytards are so retarded. Yes the Wii U is not selling but that doesn't mean they should give up
Nintendo acted as if they gave up on the Wii u since a month or 2 after launch - they have made a sorry effort all the way around and it is a shame because there are some very nice aspects to the Wiii u-
Nintendo needs younger minds...and new games. That is really all it would take to breathe life into the company again. These executives are really out of touch with the consumer...
