They're thinking "Let's put a lot of faith in the well established developer of a very popular franchise, even though what they want to do isn't the norm." The result of that is a large investment, and only time will tell if it was money well spent. I think in the long run it will be. Another relatively new development in the console gaming community, along with the fixation on sales, is this trend of declaring a game to be either GotY or a complete failure well before it releases. I'm not saying that's what this article/video said, but the title made me think of this relatively new trend.
