GamesBeat: We compare the Wii U’s global sales with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii during similar points in their lives.
Yeesh. Wonder how Reggie will address this at E3.
Not sure this is good news for Nintendo, but that number is sold through, correct? So, the Console has sold through over 1.5-2 million more consoles(because they won't tell us) than X1s that have reached retail. No one ever seems to know what X1 has sold through to end users.
I don't think it is sold through. The figures come from financial data so it is related to shipped as shipped=sold for Nintendo (I could be wrong though).
The Xbox was at 3 million at the start of 2014. And it has only sold 711k in the US. It has been bombing everywhere in Europe outside the UK. That puts the Xbox One at 3.7 million plus some small amount for mostly the UK in 2014. The Xbox One has a long way to go before it reaches Wii U numbers at its currently poor rate of sales. Edit: Both Nintendo and Sony back in 2006 made public statements that they only report actual sold to customers numbers. Microsoft is the only company that plays the silly game of trying to pretend their shipments to retailers are actual sales to customers.
@ AGaryColmanClone Way to make up numbers man. Plus last generation in the early years of the ps3 sony would say how many units they shipped all the time quit making up lies.
Way to go ats1992 - you're 0/2 http://spong.com/article/19... "We calculate our install base by 'sell through' and have done for the last four years I believe", we asked for a little additional clarification... "We classify 'sell through' as the number of units consumers have actually purchased from retail. 'Sell in' is the number of units we've sold to retail." And Nintendo does the same. And LOL at claiming actual sales numbers for the Xbox One from NPD are 'made up'.
@AGaryColemanClone As dude above me says, that last part is absolute bs. When Sony was struggling with the PS3 at the beginning of the last generation they would only ever report on units shipped, not direct sales to consumers.
dodgemoose, give it a rest. You just look stupid trying to argue about something that has been both Nintendo and Sony's official corporate policy since 2006.
It is right there in Sony's official financial reports: http://www.sony.net/SonyInf... "From FY07 the method of reporting unit sales was changed from shipments to recorded sales (FY06 reclassified)" End of debate. Sony only reports sold to customer numbers since the start of 2007. I use to have Nintendo's linked but can't find it right now, but they made the same change as Sony did.
Pretty sad we got fanboys that just can't resist talking about the X1, even when the article has nothing to do with MS. Some are just so obsessed with X1, yet they don't own one. Why? "dodgemoose, give it a rest. " Oh the irony. @Mystic You didn't finish the quote. I wonder why. Do you ever see me obsessed with PS4 anywhere near as much as Sony fans are obsessed with X1? No. They find MS so threatening that they devout half their day trying to convince themselves and others that PS4 is better. Pretty sad.
"Pretty sad we got fanboys…" Oh the irony indeed. Wow check out the PS3 vs 360 numbers after a comparable amount of time on the market.
@ georgeenoob: "Do you ever see me obsessed with PS4 anywhere near as much as Sony fans are obsessed with X1? No." you talk about sony/PS4 in 7 out of your last 11 comments, so the answer to that question is actually, "Yes." OT: 6.17 million after over a year is pretty dismal compared to the ~6-7 million PS4s or ~4-5 million xbones sold in about 6 months.
Oh god Coleman.... Yes PS is doing great now, fair play to them, but early in PS3 days, they only reported shipped, along with PS2..... At least be honest and hold your hands up, not have them down holding something....
"Do you ever see me obsessed with PS4 anywhere near as much as Sony fans are obsessed with X1? No." You actually are. LOL. You actually are from your recent comment history. It is almost as if you are trying to do a damage control.
The backlash of the journos still salty Nintendo isn't giving them first look at their E3 news on stage... reverting back to Nintendoomed click-bait.
The Mario have been milked...now lets milk whatever is left, oh wait, we still can milk Mario a bit more (Mario Kart 8).
Hey it's quality milk better than koolaid I say!
Do you play old God of War, Uncharted, COD, Halo, or AC? No, but Super Mario Bros. 3's replay value can't be erased by a sequel. All those other games become obsolete. Nintendo games don't. Rehash your bowl.
Nintendo releases one Mario Kart per console, that one game every 6 or so years. Yeah that's totally milking...
He will announce the PeaceofChit U His body is ready to drop dem bombs!
george, you troll Sony articles and yet you're calling out fanboys? Pot, meet kettle.
I hope the Wii U rallies.
Imagine an army of Wii Universal soldiers marching as to war to e3. Now that would be epic
How the mighty have fallen. :(
I hope no-one take offence to this (and they really shouldn't) but Nintendo have not been in that powerful home console number one/significant position for quite some time. They were lucky with the Wii (I doubt even Nintendo anticipated the success of that machine considering they under manufactured amount wise the system; it was popular but they could have improved supply for it) and this is the anomaly. Nintendo systems haven't done that well since the Fifth generation launched It isn't bad nor am I having a go at Nintendo but your statement is wrong in relation to Nintendo home consoles. They haven't fallen because there was nothing substantial to fall from
Unfortunately a shadow of their former self ;)
It's not fallen until they prematurely kill the Wii U(Prematurely meaning before announcing their next home console) P.S. Not gonna happen
What should happen is to get those check books out and use some of that cash they got last gen and buy 3rd party AAA support, a lot actually, then they might sway some of us to take the dive. Mario (and its 16 variations)just wont cut it anymore.
Things aren't looking great. No doubt Smash and Mario Kart will move a lot of units, but this is sadly going to be Nintendo's worst selling console to date. I just can't see it surpassing the Gamecube. That said, the Wii U has an awesome lineup, and Nintendo keeps making brilliant games for the device. As a PC gamer, the Wii U stands as the only absolute must own console with PS4 coming in at a close but no cigar second. PS4 will be a must own in a few years though, once it's built up its own nice collection of must have exclusives.
No, they made something far worst, virtual boy.
They need a pokemon version for the wii u instead if being on the handhelds.
Sadly, the director for the Pokemon games said he won't do that :/
He will the moment he realizes that Nintendo has a crap-ton of cash to invest.
Hoping that Smash Bros and Mario Kart (among other games) can turn it around for Nintendo. I don't own one, but it is a shame to see it suffering
first an article today about xbox one with a picture saying "help", now the same for the wii u. its almost like this site is just wishing for any competitor of sony to go down.
on the contrary Venture Beat has been an pro-Xbox site since 2006. may be they are desperate for hits like kotaku now
this site as in N4G approved stories and stories with the most heat.
I personally think there's a good chance it will sell 15 million in its lifetime
That's too generous of you! Like all things Nintendo they'll most likely drop support for it after 3 or 4 years in the market. This is what I mean that they don't future proof their systems. ;)
WiiU sales will increase in all regions and close the Ps4 sales lead by the end of the year. It won't pass it, but I'm willing to bet WiiU sales will pass Ps4 for a month or two, globally. Nintendo will have the best holiday either way.
That's too generous of you
Love it, Get all the Wii U sales articles up before Mario Kart 8 drops!
Right just like how player essence won't submit articles on why Iwata should step down or be fired and is resorting to banning people who do. ;)
Kaz has lost Sony how much money? Sony is at WHAT financial status? Barely see any articles on that too.
Why should PE submit articles on people asking for Iwata to be fired? That's not news or facts. Its just somebody's opinion. No blog site is obligated to post that. LOL, that shit isn't real news. When its clearly stated in the rules they don't accept negative clickbait articles on MS, Sony, or Nintendo. They don't submit articles asking for Kaz to step down despite the PS Vita and Sony's financials issues. PE has banned users for spamming Sony doom articles too.
Weren't Mario 3D World and Tropical Freeze supposed to sell hardware?
From my understanding 3D World pushed a lot of hardware of the holiday break. Wii U sales increased when DKC came out too. MK8 is going to help as well.
I can't believe you're still at this Francis. Right from the start I was calling the WiiU the 'Dreamcast 2', and it was very easy to see why. You are all about the fanboy aspect of video game console analysis, which replaces good honest objectivity with blind hope for your favorite brand. I predict that the WiiU will be around for one more fiscal year before they announce the end of the WiiU. I can only hope that once Mario Cart fails to turn the ship around for Nintendo's latest console, that you will not turn to another upcoming game release as being the savior of the system. You've essentially been moving the goal posts with ever game release that has come out for the system. The last couple of times we communicated, you said that Pikmin3 would be a massive system seller, then it was The Wonderful 101, then it was Super Mario 3D World......Let me guess, after Mario Cart doesn't perform like you anticipate, you'll be placing your bets on the next Smash Bros..
LOL Fanboy aspect? I got all the systems and all the games. Fanboys these days are gracious with their money. You're the real fanboy man. You only play Sony games, don't plan on playing any of Nintendo's great games, and only want to talk sales, while I'm hear playing InFamous Second Son, Titanfall, and Super Mario 3D World. GTFO, YOU'RE all about the sales fanboy nonsense dude. And you might want to go back and look what was actually said man.
I see, so it's the classic deflection away from the topic at hand on your part. Well that's ok, I expected nothing less, otherwise you wouldn't still be going around basically saying how well the WiiU is going to sell whenever the next 'such'n such' game comes out. Just for the record though, and I've said this to you on multiple occasions, that I refuse to buy the PS4. I refuse to buy it because I refuse to pay a subscription fee to play online, and I personally don't see anything great about the PS4 line-up of games. Most of the good games that have come out since the Xbox One and PS4 have released, are also on PC, which is where I've decided to game this generation.
There is no classic deflection going on. I told you to go back and look at what I said. You came at me calling me names. You only seemed worried about SALES NOT GAMES. Where I have been worried and promoting games from day one. Cause you spend more time taking about games, than actually playing them. Where as I got all the systems to enjoy games man. You can hit me up on Google+ if you want to talk about this live....you know since you have everything all figured out smart guy.
The Wii U is just not selling - unless something drastic happens I can't see Nintendo offering support for another year. Heck, it's in their annual report - for the entire year 2014 (worldwide) Nintendo forecasts 3.6mil Wii U sold.. that's it Read it here on GAF including the original report. http://www.neogaf.com/forum...
They need to hold out for two more years. If they announce something as early as next year it will kill of the Wii U (even if it takes two years for the new system to come out). This will cause distrust amongst customers and, more importantly, content makers because 3 years before dropping support for a system isn't going to build trust for developers or consumers. I feel that will kill the home console brand
Right now, maybe that's what Nintendo needs to do.. completely miss a generation or two (if needed) see how the market shifts and what consumers wants. Still release and maintain a handheld console (but, even that market is changing and some would say not for the best either) But forego the home console, for now at least.. and then release something amazing, that everyone would want.
@barb_wire I think that would be incredible risky. The 3DS had a rocky start because it was a system priced in the past. Nintendo dropped the price and released a good game or two and sales shot up meaning more support plus more good games. The issue is can they survive on an unstable market. I know handhelds are really popular in Asia but they are becoming less popular in Western markets (hence why the 3DS is not and will not do as well as the DS). Also the way Sony has made steps into streaming PS3 games means the handheld market could shrink further if more services like this pop up on portable devices (kind of where the market is going) I believe their most potentially stable products will be the home console which is why they really need to sort it out. If they drop out of that I don't see them recovering
@iamnsuperman Well, I think we can both agree that whatever Nintendo needs to do, it needs to do now and not later.. the longer it waits, the worse it will be for them to comeback. Whatever they do, I hope that they don't call it 'Wii xxx' - the Wii name is done, time for something else.
You can't see Nintendo supporting Wii U for another year? Which orifice does one even begin pulling these insights from.
I thought that number seemed almost TOO low given all that's coming out this year. Either they know they won't be getting as many games out this year as they say, or they're being conservative with the numbers in hopes that the comparatively decent numbers (say 4.5 million or something) look comparatively decent.
you should always be conservative with your public numbers (the numbers you make public should always be lower than your internal estimates) else you have situations like last year where you had a ridiculous projection of over 9 million and failed miserable and looked pathetic.....
I think they should've dropped that whole dumb "Wii" name instead of making a Wii U and made a GameCube 2 or Ultra/Ultimate Nintendo.
Yeah, i just call it Nintendo
And as the crowd looked on, shaking their head in disgust at the stupidity before them, the media brought out the liquified remains of the dead horse known formerly as "the sales argument", poured it into the dirt, and proceeded to splash around gleefully in the resulting puddle of filth. All while the trolls at the forefront one again began chanting "Doom on U!" Seriously, how many times will this crap be brought up? When was the last time low sales forced Nintendo to drop a home console before it's best games were even released? Screw it; I'm just going to go back to enjoying the games on the system. I'm sick of all of this e-peen-inspired console wars BS.
Everyone's just getting it out of their systems because they know that Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros and the confirmed unveiling of Zelda at E3(And from some rumors, a new console Metroid) this year will cause a massive sales boom this holiday season and there is nothing they can do about it.
Sales are all that matters when discussing the 3ds. You have to eat the good and the bad. This article is only showing you the truth you refuse to see. The WiiU is one of the greatest flops in gaming history and it is well deserved. Nintendo messed up and misjudged the market. There console isn't selling well. They will release a new home console in 3 or 5 years and the only way that console will be a success and a true competitor in the console race is if they offer everything the competition has on top of their stable of exclusives. Tablet gimmicks and motion gimmicks won't bring in the fair weather casuals of last gen so it was a fool's mission to chase them instead of appealing to the millions that went out and bought a WiiU day 1 because they believe in Nintendo. But of course they won't do that and the reason is simple. People like you are partly responsible and part of the reason why the WiiU is what it is. You LOVE mediocrity. You're happy that games like Arkham Knight and the Witcher won't be on your console. You refuse to believe that gamers want more than Mario and colorful platformers. You pretend like graphics don't matter but love talking about how capable the WiiU is as if you are not playing a graphically improved version of the Mario I played back in the mid 80's. And then you talk about how sales don't matter as if that won't affect what games you will get on your console. You always point to how awful the ps3 did despite the fact that the ps3 sold twice as many consoles at $200 more. At some point you have to question Nintendo's commitment to YOU. You can't just blame the poor sales on doom articles and haters. You can't pretend like making a few nickels I each unit sold equals a successful console. This isn't an epeen contest but a struggle for Nintendo to remain relevant In the console space. It's a shame people like you choose to cheer on what everyone else knows to be failure but those of us that have been gaming on Nintendo consoles since the 80's will cheer when Nintendo chooses to compete again in the "bs" console wars like they did with sega in their hay day.
"Sales are all that matter when discussing the 3DS". Yeah, no. Bullshit. It's got a great line-up to back it up and its advertisement levels were leaps and bounds better than the Wii U's on top of that. As to that mediocrity post, stuff it. Most of the games on the other two consoles are guilty of the exact same mediocrity, covered by a supposed "next-gen LEAP in graphics" that isn't even proving itself, yet you conveniently ignore that point and the ones many others have made, for the sake of using it as an insult against me. You put words in my mouth when I've never once stated I was happy to see those games skip the console, nor said that I don't believe people don't want Mario or colorful platformers, and I've never, not ONCE, gone out of my way to hold up the Wii U's graphics as any sort of standard against consoles that have better graphics inherently. The most I've ever said is that the graphics on it are good enough to still look gorgeous, and that the majority of third party ports to the Wii U were lazy efforts that have done more harm than good to the Wii U, and would have been better off replaced by some exclusives built from the ground up FOR the system. And to top that all off, you say that I've been saying sales don't affect what games come to the console? Where? WHERE have I said precisely that? Not where you THINK I ALLUDED TO IT. Where I ACTUALLY SAID THAT. Oh, wait; THERE IS NO QUOTE LIKE THAT BECAUSE I NEVER SAID IT. Most of the time that I point out the PS3, is to point out that IT WAS A SUCCESS DESPITE ITS LOUSY PROFITS IN THE BEGINNING. If you'd been paying attention to most of my posts, you'd know that. But you haven't. No, you've been shoving words down my throat and using half-done quotes to support your nonsensical fantasies regarding what you think I've said. Keep your slanderous BS to yourself. You're calling a system that's only barely past its two year mark a failure when it hasn't gotten many of its best games and then you try to tell me that I'm the one at fault for mediocrity in games? Talk to a mirror, champ. I'm done catering to a dude-bro with such a warped sense of reality. The truth is, you're just ticked off that my post about sales not being the end-all determiner, and being a dead horse argument, hit a point of pride that you've got buried deep inside for your own choice of system, and it's made you so salty that there's not enough pretzels on earth to get rid of it all. I'm done with you; don't bother replying. I won't see it, you're not worth my time until you've grown up.
Is funny how n4g constantly reminding us how poorly the Wii U is Selling
Nobody wants a wiiu other than die hard nintendo fans why can't u guys just face that fact. I don't hear anybody talking about it other than people on here kids don't want it mature gamers don't casuals don't either. Just be happy about whatever sales it gets just don't expect it to lead the home console market or u will be extremely disappointed.
To be fair, I don't hear people talking about the PS4 and Xbox One where I am either. People don't talk about video games very often in everyday conversation. I don't think anyone expects the Wii U to lead the market (even die-hard Nintendo fans don't see it leading the market). At best, I think it will reach N64 sales at best and gamecube level sales at worst. 15 million to 30 million. I think PS4 will lead with 80+ million consoles sold. Sony has never had a console with less than that. Microsoft maybe 50-60 million? I dunno, somewhere between xbox 360 and the original xbox's sales.
@Paulcek fair enough on the first part of your post and honestly I agree with you on the numbers in the second part of your post except I would take maybe 5 to 8 mill off of microsofts numbers.
Millions of people are missing out on a great console....its a great machine...oh well, I will enjoy it long after it dies.
