$500 million is a scary big number. Destiny is a scary big game. And failure is real. So, why is Activision spending so much money on it?
Destiny could be the biggest new franchise long as Bungie delivers on their end..There is a lot of pressure on Bungie due to Destiny being the studios first brand new world outside of Halo.
I don't think the always online DRM is gonna help. It could look like Sim City in the beginning.
Destiny was built to be a connected world with new content every day, that's right Bungie has stated there will be new content every single day over the next ten years promising their data centers and studios will have manpower 24/7, constantly releasing new content. That would not be possible without a need to be connected to the internet. DRM is a different beast which requires an online connection for no reason at all other than to ensure you're not playing a pirated version of the game. There's a massive difference.
Bungie is a tremendous talent with amazing Halo games. MS's huge loss. Yes 343 is decent, but not as good as bungie. Just look at the review scores on metacritic.
https://halo.bungie.net/Pro... I don't know if you mean outside of Halo as in they only ever made Halo before Destiny or this is their first new Title after being done with Halo.
Why do people always forget Myth?
* This basically means we get 2-3 Destiny games over the next 8-10 years.
This game could be good or bad. Good because of Bungie being involved. Bad because of Activision being involved.
Here's to looking at you kid.
I don't think they are. Activision is lying to generate cheap hype for "They are spending $500 Million on the game so it must be an amazing/must get product" crowd.
Very possible. But r they spending that much initially or budgeting it for a 10 yr mmo? Thats a big difference.
Destiny is not an MMO. It's a shared world action FPS. It has MMO elements.
Cause they think they have another COD in their hands? I mean these guys made Halo so........ Its all about that cash baby!
nice artical where did that come from?
Destiny is a very ambitious game for Bungie, even if they have a proven track record with halo. This is by no means an easy task. A studio could easily bite off more then they can chew with goals set so high in the sky. They have to get so many things right in-order for this to be a huge success, and while that's no easy task, I think if anyone can do it. It is going to be a studio like Bungie or NaughtDog or Rockstar, one of those studios who understand gaming on another level. There have been reports of the game going a stray or feeling boring, but I'm sure Bungie is going learn a lot from the beta, and that's where they will rain in, what works and what's not working so well. I believe they will deliver a title well worth the wait. Time will tell, and if I was a betting man, I would put my money on only these top 3 tier studio's to be able to pull off something like this game. If the pre-order numbers are anything to go by, I would say gamers seem to be amazed at the vision, and this is one of the most wanted titles of 2014 as it should be, because games this big or looking this good don't come around too often. .____........___... .____||......||.......|___|| ||.........___||............ ||
$498 million on marketing. $1 million on development, salaries, porting, printing discs, shipping etc. Oh, and $1 million on a diamond studded Rolex watch for Bobby Kotick.
Why Activision is spending $500 million on Destiny Stories that are based on space/universe cost more than stories that are based on land. On land(earth of course) they don't have to explain much because you already know it. The cost($500 million) to make Destiny means its going to have a very deep storyline. I believe a huge proportion of the destiny's story is about the traveler and why they came to earth to help humans.
Yes, because space pixels cost more to render than land pixels, right?
It has nothing to do with pixels. On land we already know what a tree look like, water, sky, basic physic on earth, etc. In space everything has to explained in great detail because most people don't know about the universe/space/origin/planets/ stars/galaxy/gravitational pull/etc. EX. The last star trek would've cost more money to produce had they film it in space. I believe the producer wanted to use a smaller budget to film star trek.
But no historical research or photography needed for realism or accuracy. In sci-fi you can make everything up.
I've had mine preordered since last year.
That number is frighteningly big. I really hope Destiny lives up to the hype. =o
Video Game budgets have gotten out of hand. Totally out of hand.
If they make money and bring content gamers love then it's a win/win, no?
@Software_Lover For real. This reminds me if The Last Action Hero insanity back in the day. Activision/Bungie had better hope that it doesn't turn out the same way. On a side note, if the game is a sales disappointment, how long do you think Activision give us out of the alleged 10 year plan before they shut it down?
I hope this game can break the terrible cycle we are in of over-promising and under-delivering.
Well! as long as the game's good i don't care about the money1
Another website advertising DESTINY for free! Awesome! I can not wait to play this game!
Because they make 3 times that off suckers with their cod franchise.
The "most expensive.....blah blah" is the oldest hype trick in the book. I love the halo games, but the hype for this game can only lead to one thing!!
Looks like Activision wants Destiny to be the new Call of Duty. And that's not so good...
a good question.
