What We Want To See From Nintendo's Next Handheld

The 3DS is now more than three years old, which — if tradition is to be followed — places it roughly halfway through its effective life span as Nintendo's main handheld system. It's almost certainly the next piece of hardware that Nintendo will seek to replace, and given the (quickly quashed) rumours of new hardware swirling around this year's E3, it got us thinking about what we want from the next portable console to come out of the company's Kyoto labs.

The graphical arms race argument doesn't work, especially when you compare the 3DS line to smartphones and tablets. The games that people buy on those devices like Angry Birds aren't pushing any hardware; the games best suited for handhelds (and the ones that sell) are simple and accessible. There's no need to tackle top-of-the-line, super expensive graphics processing on a handheld system, because the games you put on that system don't focus on that level of graphics.

And forget that all-digital stuff. That worked out great for the PSP Go, didn't it? Give the option of both physical and digital, and do not expect that everyone will embrace all-digital with open arms, because they won't.

Come to think of it, a lot of these features come from smartphone and tablet gaming. The ideas seem to scream "make the next Nintendo handheld more like a smartphone", and I'm very discouraged by that opinion.

Nintendos next handheld should;

1. Rumble

2. Internet Service (not just wifi)

3. That 2nd joystick

The PSP Go is a terrible reference considering how well digital downloads are doing on 3DS and mobile. The world is different from in 2009 and the PSP Go failed due to its high price point and being a re model.

Also, I think the author is saying they should use more common hardware componenets to have parity with smartphones so devs have an easier time programming and porting more than being a raw beast technically. At this point it will cost Nintendo more to get a sub-800x480 screen and to use slower ARM CPUs, less RAM, etc. than simply using common smartphone parts. Like how Wii U uses PowerPC and other uncommon parts while PS4/XB1 use more common PC hardware like AMD Jaguar.

I don't like tablets and, to be honest, I don't think that nintendo will give us a tablet instead of a console....

No physical media? That would be awful. Just give us the choice to either download or buy a physical copy at the store, as it is now.

I think the next one should have about the graphical fidelity of the Vita, 4 times the resolution(for scaling purposes of older titles), have a second slide pad and two more buttons(a la circle pad pro), plus an LED or OLED screen(improved clarity and battery performance), and full backwards compatibility with 3DS and DS games.

4x resolution is probably a tall order though. Well, a man can dream, can't he?

Those are my thoughts on the next iteration.
