Will Mario Kart 8 be the Wii U's Killer App?

Mario Kart 8 is right around the corner. This could be the Wii U’s killer app with the tournament play, robust roster, and online multiplayer. Mario Kart is a great game, everyone likes it and its an excuse some people have been waiting for to buy the Wii U. But will it be enough to move systems and keep gamers content until the next big AAA release?

Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros are the two games that will make or break the Wii U. If both prove to be highly successful games, than the Wii U may finally get the big system sellers that it's needed.

Ittoryu1605d ago

Those two are supposed to be the big system seller.

No doubt Mario Kart 8 will sell in the millions, every other MK game has sold in the 5+ millions. hopefully this will also push more Wii U's into the market, I know I will get the myself one once the game comes out later this month.

MNGamer-N1605d ago

The last Mario Kart sold nearly 40 million units. That is alot, I think there are a few Kart fans out there.

That mario kart wii u bundle is a great deal, You get a free remote and kart 8 plus a digital version of a game of your choice. Pikmin 3, zelda windwaker hd, wii u party, or super smash brothers U check it out.

Fixay1605d ago

Surely thinsg can only get better from MK8 releasing and then Smash bros.

I've pre ordered my MK8 bundle, cant't wait and happy to show my suppourt

Wii U MK8 bundles are getting good pre-orders from retailers, I think there is definitely a boost in sales coming for the Wii U... That being said if MK8, and smash fail to help sales than there really is trouble in nintendoland.

I'm fairly sure that a Zelda U announcement at E3 will also help.

Like shenmu3? I hope they don't call it that haha.

Come Christmas 2014, Wii U will the dozens of AAA exclusives it has now PLUS:

Mario Kart 8
Xenoblade 2
Bayonetta 2
Smash Bros
Hyrule Warriors
Sonic Boom
Shin Megami Tensei

Project C.A.R.S
CoD: Advanced Warefare (Wii U logo confirmed on CoD:AW Website

PLUS anything else that hasn't been announced yet.

I mean, you'd have to be looney to deny Wii U as an extremely attractive purchase for ANY core gamer.... there will be thousands of hours of entertainment there.

It's going to be the first first party game for the Wii U that takes online seriously.
That's a pretty big deal, so I'd say yeah, it'll be a must-have.

deafdani1605d ago

To hell with the disagreers, what you said is simply the truth. So far, no game from Nintendo themselves has truly taken advantage of the Wii U's online capabilities, and that's a fact.

Better late than never, I guess. That said, I think MK8 will set up a new standard for online play on the Wii U, the standard that any other game will aspire to reach.

ChickeyCantor1605d ago (Edited 1605d ago )

Biggest issue i take with Nintendo is that they refuse to come up with a unified system that can work for every game.

Sure it gives developers the freedom to implement their own thing ( which is a matter of budget unfortunately and coding net code isn't an easy thing to doe ). Yes there is a standard for miiverse. That's a nice thing. But honestly though it would have helped other developers too if there was standard for them to work with that could expand beyond the miiverse thing.

Mario Kart is probably the only Nintendo game that will support something like youtube uploads.

Mario Karts online system works great. And it's a shame Nintendo doesn't explore more of it.

"Better late than never"
Actually MK8's online is similar to Wii. So they had that right. But again it's for one specific game.

It's a no brainer must buy especially now they give you a free game with it as well (in the u.k anyway, a couple of which are great if not already owned) and with pre order bonus' on top games practically free (if you manage to get a free bullet bill t-shirt/keyring or racing wheel on top) safe to say I've got a couple of the special editions on pre order with different pre order bonus' ;) can't wait

kube001605d ago

Yea the voice chat and tournament play, this may be the game that gets people to buy consoles

Grave1605d ago

It has me reaching for my wallet and I haven't been interested in Nintendo since N64.

RosweeSon1605d ago

Do it you'll love it, classic and quality games, specially if you start delving through the virtual console, earthbound ;) just saying.
