Lucasfilm just announced that all new media relating to Star Wars, including the Star Wars: Battlefront reboot, will be part of the official canon.
That's actually good to hear. Making Battlefront 3 canon almost confirms a good story in that game. Also it shows that this is a big deal for both EA and LucasArts so we might be in for a very good game. On another note I liked especially this part a lot: "EA's Frank Gibeau told CVG that the new plan for EA is to rotate between Titanfall, Star Wars: Battlefront and Battlefield games every year." Maybe EA is changing for the better, giving games more development time ...or maybe they have finally played their own games and realized that releasing buggy messes like Sim City or BF4 isn't helping this industry at all.
I'm encouraged by EA's comment towards a 3-year, 3 franchise cycle. IF they stick to it and launch each title correctly, then each installment should be a well timed compliement to the last one while allowing it to mature but without that annualized feeling.
I disagree. It confirms that the story will be canon, whether its any good is another thing all together. Now, EA being in charge of making games with the SW license is certainly better than LucasArts. But I am extremely skeptical until I see what Disney intends to do with the franchise. They've had successes with existing franchises but also some failures. Its been quite a while since I've been wow'ed by anything with Star Wars attached to it. There has been some up's but quite a few down's as well. Just based on the track records alone of everyone involved with the SW license currently, a certain amount of skepticism seems justified.
BF = 2013 Titanfall = 2014 SW BF = 2015 Bf5 = 2016 Am I close ?
I agree. It seems like EA is aware of the opportunity they have with Battlefront. It's a beloved franchise and if they do it justice it'll go a long way towards repairing their relationship with gamers.
they need to have a few classic multiplayer mods in Battlefront like hero assault i believe it was called that was a whole lot of fun.
DICE No story mode please
Why not, battlefront always had a good story mode and without it be a multiplayer game which will not be worth my time since I like to play story first before multiplayer.
Dude even though Battlefield campaigns are just the same old Military fanfictions, Dice making a campaign based on star wars would be something awesome especially with the Frostbite engine graphics.
A campaign might be worthwhile especially if it somehow ties in the events between ROTJ and Episode VII
I just heard the original cast is coming to the The next Star Wars movie. I wonder if they will be in the next game as well.
Sure is a small 'Star Wars' universe now that Disney culled the EU comics/books and games.
I think it sucks. Even worse if KOTOR is forgotten because of it.
Yeah I LOVE the casting choices. A bunch of unfamiliars. Well semi-unfamiliar. Just no HUGE names to the cast aside from the originals. So excited about John Boyega being in the cast. He killed it in Attack the Block. OT- Cannot wait for Battlefront. My favorite Star Wars game next to Rogue Squadron, KOTOR, and Force Unleashed.
I'm a massive SW fan, but I'll pass on anything from DICE/EA...I can't understand why anyone would be excited for this after BF4...I have no faith in them to produce a not broken game, especially considering all the similarities between Battlefront and Battlefield. Until they prove me wrong (which I don't think they will after the last 2 battlefields) I will not buy this.
Your fears are justified, so in a way I agree with you. But at the same time this franchise is so dear to me and I just can't pass it up.
There's also something to be said about DICE Stockholm getting a project they're EXCITED about. I'm sure after the fourth installment of any game there's a certain amount of complacency that occurs. But considering many of the staff at DICE Stockholm probably played/loved this game in their youth I have a feeling they're going to do something special.
BF4 for me isn't all that bad lol I'm not huge fan of the game but it does seem to work for me and the only thing that happens to me is te rubber banding but it kind of comes and goes. I'd just love to play a star wars game that played similar to BF4, i'd play it even with all the bugs haha
Let's just hope that they have had more time to sort out the issues with the new consoles and everything is a bit more smooth. Prior to BF4, I had very few issues with DICE games...with the Bad Company games and BF3 being very stable at least for me. At any rate, I understand being cautiously optimistic.
Unless it gets massively great reviews, I'll hold off as well. The only thing that would be a no-question buy from me would be 2143, and I doubt that'll happen.
after BF4 and its issues, i think im going to wait and see...
This could go either way. I'll give an example: Activison owns Beenox, a studio that has made four Spider-Man games. The first game, Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, is actually a pretty great and under-rated game that not only had tons of comic book style, but also featured a who's who of Spidey's rogue's gallery. Conversely, their last effort (The Amazing Spider-Man) while not a bad game was so basic and uninspired. It didn't have any decent villains, an impactful storyline or any real style; it felt like a typical movie tie-in game. If a Star Wars game attempts to tie directly into the movies by continuing story threads, or even possibly filling in the gaps between the upcoming trilogy, then it is going to be really difficult for it to be worthwhile. Not impossible, just difficult. However, if they choose to flesh out the "new" expanded universe, then there are plenty of opportunities for creativity. Personally, I can't wait.
So... forget Anything we licensed and made money off of you buying books, and comics...even the ill-fated Ewok TV series. None of that counts...unless it was one of our movies or the Clone Wars cartoon cause that was cool. Beyond that it means nothing... But now anything new made will be cannon so you better buy all this stuff cause this is the real story... not the other stuff...this stuff...the new stuff. Pretty amazing...way to try and re-write history to sell the importance of the new product. Star Wars has been on a Death March for years despite a rabid core fan base, I am not sure this new "revelation" will do anything to counter that.
I understand what you guys are saying about BF4 and DICE but just because it was buggy doesn't mean it was a bad game and to be fair that was mainly the multiplayer that was buggy. If EA didn't rush it out to compete last year with cod maybe they could have done an extensive beta (longer then the one they had obviously) and they would have released a much more polished game.
The Star Wars EU certainly had its fair share of shovelware and poorly thought out dime novels, but it had some real masterpieces in there as well. If they're going to just jettison Exar Kun, Kyle Katarn, Thrawn, Mara Jade, Talon Karrde, and all of the rich history that's built up over the years, they had better start off this new cycle with something worth the trade-off. This could be for the best, or it could be the worst mistake yet. Having a Battlefront style game lead off the new videogame canon is a sketchy move to me. I'm willing to wait and see, but I won't be holding my breath.
