Oh, how we gamers dream of slipping the surly bonds of genre! Why, we ask, must games follow the well-trodden paths of games that have come before, instead of trying something new, something dangerous, something revolutionary? It all seems so obvious! This is what The Last Federation tries to do, offering a science-fiction strategy game very much unlike the typical Galactic Civilizations empire-building or StarCraft-style tactics. But while its simultaneous turn-based tactical combat is great, and strategic ideas are clever, its novel systems are disappointingly underdeveloped, making too much of The Last Federation confusing.
