Eurogamer: Mass Effect Review

Eurogamer writes: "Given that Kristan wrote a three-page review of the Xbox 360 version back in November, and the PC version is basically identical, I'm left with a whole review to dwell on the important questions about Mass Effect.

For instance, why did BioWare model its adorably rubbish Mako ground-attack truck on early-eighties toy Big Trak: the Fully Programmable Electronic Vehicle? Almost everything about Mass Effect can be explained with a little thought (Why is the combat a bit shonky? They haven't had a crack at an action game since MDK2. Why is it so talky? Well, it's a BioWare game, innit. Why do you have to buy stuff from the bloke in the basement of your ship rather than just court-martialling the little dipstick? Because BioWare cannot resist the tropes of the RPG genre). But the Big Trak homage is completely inexplicable. Perhaps Big Trak is worshipped as a totemic creature in Edmonton? Perhaps Greg and Ray were always denied one as kids and decided Mass Effect would be their late Christmas? Perhaps they were aiming for a Halo Warthog clone and just missed?" (Mass Effect, PC) 8/10

I still think that the 360 version's review was unfair and so is this one (Though I'm mostly arguing about the score which is kinda stupid come to think of it :D ).

i honestly didnt like mass effect too much
it was good for a single playthrough but once i finished it once, that was it. i traded the game afterwards. the combat wasnt as solid as i wanted it to be but its a pretty good one for an rpg. the exploration was kinda bland too, they all felt the same and the interiors were too similar. the only ones that caught my eye was the citadel and the other planets on the main quests. the side quest planets were the ones that were too similar. ill prolly just rent the sequel if anything, if i like it then ill buy it but im more interested in a new KOTOR.

I'm with you. I was underwhelmed by Mass Effect. I've played through about 60% of it and it hasn't grabbed me in a way that made me want to continue.

It's certainly not a bad game - I like the dialogue trees, but the environments to the combat are...sterile - like something is missing.
Exploring planets got old really fast - different colored rocks and some small bunker to clear out...

I downloaded the additional content, but haven't had the urge to try it out.

Frankly, I'm not that excited about the sequels and may not continue with the franchise.
