Super Street Fighter II: What Did Critics Say in 1994?

Four Street Fighter II games in three years? Sure, why not. This is Super Street Fighter II, the almost-final revision of the popular arcade series. It adds four new characters, new backgrounds, enhanced moves and much, much more. Was this yet another must-own Capcom game, or were critics starting to get burned out on Street Fighter II? We turn to old issues of Electronic Gaming Monthly, Game Players, Die Hard Game Fan, Super Play and Nintendo Power to find the answer.

"l'm getting a little tired of having to buy a new SF game every year. Sure this game has four new characters and a nifty Tournament Mode, but why get this one, when you can wait a year for the next one? Super SF II plays the same as before, but the voices are horrible and the graphics need a few touch-ups. Capcom needs to totally redo this game to get my interest back. It's just more of the same." -Ed Semrad

Capcom is masters of rehashing.

Even back then 7 out of 10 was like an abyss you threw all your garbage into and never looked back.

The guy says it's not worth it and yet he gives it a 7 out of 10?! A 7 out of 10?

With what he wrote I at least expected a 4 out of 10, maybe... just maybe a 5 out of 10. But no way in the deep canals of Al Roker's former rectum would I have guessed that his description equates to a 7 out of 10.

Well, I guess now we know that gaming journalists aren't just worthless nowadays... they were worthless even back then.

EDIT: Oops, looks like the 7 out of 10 guy was Danyon Carpenter who also didn't like the game. Ed Semrad gave it a 6 out of 10. The rest still stands given that both of them opted to tell readers NOT to buy the game, despite giving it above average scores.

a game is rarely given anything under a 6. its like reviewers dont know the numbers 1-5

I once had that EGM, GameFan, and Gamepro magazine from way back. Oh the memories.

gigoran1668d ago

I would gladly still go out and pay money to read an issue of EGM over that horrible pathetic excuse that is... kotaku.

XXXL1668d ago

EGM was the best. I couldn't wait for each new issue to see what was on the horizon

HugoDrax1667d ago

I still have those issues, I'm not lying either. I have over 100 EGM, game pro mags from the early 90's still. Maybe I should make a website dedicated to vintage mags?

i loved the original street fighter , i played it tons

optimus1667d ago

Oh wow, up until recently i had those gamepro, egm and gamefan magazines deep in my closet...i liked the supernes version of street fighter 2 only cause the sound was better. Aside from that i managed to get pretty good with the supernintendo controller. I would give it an 8/10.

ProTip: xbox live's major nelson was an editor and a major contributor for Gamefan magazine back in the day.

Super Play. That was an awesome mag. Used to love it back in the day.
