Glitching at High Speed: The Art of Speedrunning

'Watching a speedrun of a game is an odd experience, seeing someone beat a game as fast as possible by exploiting glitches, ignoring massive portions of what the designers intended for you to play and basically ripping the game to shreds in order to get the best time. With two world records being broken this week in the world of speedrunning, one being the Super Mario 64 100% completion record by Siglemic, VGU takes a closer look at this hardcore corner of the gaming world.' (Culture, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time)

Speed runs take the fun out of it for me. You're trying to cut down the amount of content you experience to the bare minimum, I just don't get it.

The people that speed run these games have beat them a huge amount of times so they pretty much know everything about the game so they have already experienced everything.

It expands the replayability of a game you absolutely love. Gives you more reasons to explore every tiny bit of the game to find these exploits and glitches and put them to good use. I personally enjoy too many games to get into this but I've always supported this community 100%. Check out speedrunslive.com or Google speed demo archive if you're interested.

Somewhat ironically, I don't have the patience for speed runs. I'm too lazy to work out the ins and outs of an effective speed run, and I know I'd break something if I screwed up a super important key move.

Modern gamers don't seem to even know what a speedrun is anymore. Quit trying to pass off glitch runs for speed runs, they are not the same thing.

A true speedrun is playing the game through AS IT WAS INTENDED, as fast as possible. You are not allowed to abuse glitches or bugs at all.
