The Bitter Duo: The Problems With Definitive Editions

EGMR writes: "In this episode we discuss the growing trend of ‘definitive editions’, after the recent announcement of The Last Of Us Remastered for PS4. Issues regarding pricing and content are explored, and ultimately it is debated whether they should be encouraged going forward." (PS3, PS4, The Last Of Us, The Last Of Us Remastered, Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

The main issue is the price. You need to understand that people bought TLOU on the PS3 and a good amount of them are going to have opinions about this. They surely spent 60 dollars already and are probably looking forward for the remastered edition, but are they willing to pay another 60 dollars? Most won't. You can't just say you are targeting newcomers and disregard your previous customers. The reason why this remastered edition is even happening is all thanks to those who supported the game in the first place. I'm pretty disappointed at ND and other companies.

I could swear that the Season Pass cost a extra $20 meaning that the overall price is $79.99 if you brought the full package. Please list the price correctly when calling out ND.

TLOU + Season Pass (When first released) $79.99
TLOU Remastered 59.99

It's easy to dismiss the price and rerelease as companies being money hungry, but we don't know the amount of work that went into remastering The Last of Us for the PS4. We know the visuals are getting an upgrade, but what about the companion and enemy AI? If those get improved, then that means a lot of work went into fixing these things.

And why can't they target newcomers? There are a ton of people switching over from the Xbox 360 to the PS4 who have heard many great things about the PS3 version of TLOU and will want to give it a try.

And, please, don't blame Naughty Dog or any developer for issuing Remastered/Definitive/Game of the Year editions of titles or for their pricing. That decision is made by the publisher.

No one is making the one's that had the ps3 version buy it. If they don't want to pay the full price then they should wait for the price that they think is valuable to them. Only because you bought it for the ps3 does not provide any type of perks for when it comes to other platforms since you already bought it for the said platform you have already.

No one is forcing people to buy the remastered games. If they stop selling, they will stop being released. Simple as that.

Its not like your ps3 is gonna break now because tlou remaster is coming out.
I will happily buy this game again. If you don't want to spend 60.- then just wait tillthe price comes down.

Why all the hoopla over a port? No one is being forced to buy any of these games. If there was no demand for a game to be ported to the ps4, no one would do it. I agree that those who have the digital download should have the upgrade option for 10 to 20 bucks, as for everyone else, if you think the game costs too much, DON'T BUY IT. MGS sure as hell ain't worth 30 to 40 dollars, so I didn't buy it. It's just that simple. Exercise your right to choose and stop whining.

No one is forcing you, but what if this is only a limited run release? You will have to deal with sellers that overprice them.

I have no problem with remasters, its actually kind of nice to have the option, especially if you haven't played the games previously. Besides, its good to have these filler games because the big games for either platform aren't coming out for a while.

i agree with your first pint, not with filler games though i have a few games i havent yet finished story mode knack, thief, dynasty warriors.

playing ff14 is taking my time away from the other games. i cant seem to stop playing that game.
