Shuhei Yoshida loves that Facebook bought Oculus, says it helps validate PlayStation's efforts

Engadget: "I woke up that morning and saw the announcement," Shuhei Yoshida tells us, remembering the day Facebook acquired Oculus VR. "And I was like, yeah!" Yoshida laughs and thrusts his arms in the air like an excited child. "For me, it was a validation for VR." As head of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios, virtual reality (and Sony's Project Morpheus) has become important to Yoshida. He wants to see it, as a medium, to succeed. and thats how you do it.. take notes Cliffy B do not downplay your competitors effort as at the end of the day the person who makes this a success will open doors to how we interact with games and future entertianment and more importantly make VR not condererd a gimmick

Now that Cliffy B. is a rich shareholder I really hope he doesn't take it upon himself to speak on behalf of Oculus.

Of course. If I was in competition with someone then they were bought out by a company I knew would derail them in the end I would love it too.

Talk about taking his enthusiasm out of context.

That's not what he said at all. How would derailing Oculus validate VR?

Shuhei isn't an idiot. He understands the economics involved. Can't say the same for a lot of ignorant gamers.

that's the benefit of playing follow the leader

Its a shame nobody follows them on making incredibly next gen and innovative games every console generation eh?
Volkama  +   670d ago
VR has thus far had no commercial success so there isn't really a leader to follow.

Morpheus is Sony finally getting back to their best imo, back at the forefront. Whether it succeeds or fails, it's good that they're investing in innovation again.
MasterCornholio  +   670d ago
Wow so your saying that when the Oculus rift was announced Sony decided to copy them and create Morpheus within a year.

That sounds stupid to be honest. Morpheus has been in development for over 3 years and Sony has been working with VR before that.
ravinash  +   670d ago
Yeah, it's not like the idea of VR as been around since the 80s.
So it does not matter who was first in the current round of trying to develop VR, it's nothing new whoever was first out of the two of them.

Best thing about Sony is they're always ready to take a risk, be it games or hardware.
Innovation and hopefully Morpheus will be pitched at an affordable/acceptable price.

Yoshida should have just asked me. I would have validated their work by saying things like "VR is going to be awesome! Can't wait!".

Yoshida-san!

You always make me feel positive when it comes to your comments! Now, that's a talent right there :)

Keep it classy, Sony guys!

he is right too. I think the fact that Facebook dropped 2 Billion (with a B) on this start up company speaks volumes about the future of VR
