Mario Kart 8 Devs Praise Power of Wii U - "It's a very pretty game"

Gamespot - Director and producer say upcoming racing game will deliver a visually impressive experience thanks to the technical ability of the Wii U.

Thanks to the power of the Wii U, Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 will deliver a visually impressive racing game the likes of which fans of the franchise have never seen, according to the game's designers.

"We're working with HD for the first time, and we really wanted to take advantage of that," Mario Kart 8 producer Hideki Konno said in a roundtable interview attended by GameSpot. "The last console version was Mario Kart Wii, which was released in 2008, so it was about six years ago. And during those six years, we were able to incorporate a lot of technology in our development process, but especially on the graphics side. So we put a lot of effort into making this a good looking game--it's a very pretty game." (Hideki Konno, Mario Kart 8, Nintendo, Wii U)

All one needs to do is look at a single screenshot to see that this thing has some real power to it. This game is GORGEOUS! I thought Nintendo Land was bright and colorful, but this further improves on it.

This is only only 15 months in to the Wii U's life, and into Nintendo's experience with HD - imagine what might be in year three and four.

I'm hoping with the more experience they themselves get, the more their development tools and documentation improve, so third parties get get ports looking and performing better.

THIS is how good games can look without trying to be "realistic".

My Most wanted game right now probably, outside of maybe smash brothers, but I might want this game even more.

* Every Track looks beautiful & fun to drive on

* New Items are awesome

* New improvements to the old tracks look good.

* Toad's Turnpike, Royal Raceway Rainbow Road 64 = ALL IN THE GAME !

* We haven't even seen multiplayer or battle mode yet.

Say what you want, but I think this WILL be a system seller for sure.

How much of a system sell, I don't know, but this game will move units for sure.

mario kart has usually been one of the biggest system sellers for Nintendo

And also the one with the biggest shelf life
Chrischi1988  +   488d ago
Oh no, to many mario karts, oh wait, just 1 for home consoles in 6 years... that people do not feel stupid saying things like that^^
candy_mafia  +   488d ago
As a Wii U owner I know this thing has power. Mario Kart 8 looks super awesome IMO and I can't wait to play it.

I think Wii U's problem is more about timing. It should have released 2 years earlier than PS4/X1.

Nintendo's poor communication regarding the system didn't help it's public perception either. Still, I love Wii U and it sits next to my PS4 with pride :)

This game looks awesome.

Killzoner99  +   488d ago
Nintendo needs to make a mature Mario game. Then they will be relevant again. This game just looks like every other Nintendo game.
BlackWolf  +   488d ago
Yes, and I want the next God of War or Killzone with unicorns, rainbows and leprechauns!! Too gory, they have to be more kid friendly. /s

Dude, you've just said something completely stupid. Mario is not a mature game, as much as Killzone is not meant for everyone.

Go back to your cave.

hows about i make you a shirt with a big "M" on it?, M for; Rated M for Mature . .

I'm surprised at how beautiful this game looks. The retro N64 Rainbow Road is outright stunning to behold. I'm very excited to see what the new Rainbow Road looks like.

And all at a rock-solid 60fps outside of split-screen.
--Onilink--  +   488d ago
Actually 2 player split screen also runs at 60FPS, which is pretty impressive IMO.
windblowsagain  +   488d ago
Wii u is same powerlevel as PS3/360 with extra ram and upto date features.

The game looks stunning though.
Ck1x  +   488d ago
No way and I'm surprised that people still think this. The WiiU is the last dedicated custom chip console where developers need to learn the hardware to get better performance and it's already eclipsing the PS3/360's end of the generation games. My guess is that the 2nd wave of Nintendo in house titles will be an even bigger leap than these over the last gen systems. Sure the WiiU doesn't just have the raw horsepower to instantly add graphical flare like the PS4, but that won't keep the system from having some very polished looking games.
fonger08  +   488d ago
It's just a common belief on this site and to those who read only negative Wii U blogs. @windblowsagain sort of contradicted himself by saying it's the same power level yet has more ram? whatever...
mysteryraz11  +   488d ago
they arent eclipsing the ps3 and 360s games go play god of war 3 or uncharted 3 and say this those look better then any wii u game to date
Ck1x  +   488d ago
@mysteryraz11:They are eclipsing Ps3/360 games because you guys are comparing completely different stylized games to each other. But an instant measure of performance could be checked by looking at what Platinum Games has produced on both the PS3&360 vs how Bayonetta 2 looks and runs in comparison. Nintendo simply doesn't have a comparable in house WiiU game like GoW Ascension yet. But I'm sure when we see games like Zelda U or a new Metroid game, that will truly be a good point to measure the system by vs similar games on the other systems. I still think that Project Cars will shock many, because it's not like NFSMW is a ugly game or something!

This releases a week after my birthday. Should I blow all my bday money on a Wii U,MK8, SM3DW, and Wind Waker HD ? Uh I don't know yet. I need to see more of what the Wii U can offer this year. I got a hard choice to make.
OtakuDJK1NG  +   488d ago
same here a little over a week too
mochachino  +   488d ago
It is a very pretty game. Anyone know what the online is like on Wii U? If it's decent and Wii U gets a price drop or good bundle I may pick one up.
Ck1x  +   488d ago
To be honest MK8 will be the first big online multiplayer game that tests the new Nintendo Network. They stated during the Nintendo minute video that MK8's online will be an exstensive part of the game and they will highlight the features in a future video.

After seeing this game now I understand why Nintendo has stayed the course and I have to say I am proud of them. People are jumping on them to produce games but the developers have indicated that this game has been in development for 6 years. Lets compare this to Watch Dogs and you can tell the difference between a high quality piece of software from one of the greatest of all times. Every site who had a chance to get their hands on the game nothing but praise.
