Why are so many big budget video games lacking the main elements that make horror, well, horror?
because most survival horror games have somehow become Call of Duty clones. BUT their are a few really good survival horror games out there and more are on the way. so stay tuned because the SCARY is coming.
Because large arsenals were introduced, they forgot why you need silence, they revealed too early and showed too much, they increased the pacing, they replaced dread with big ugly monsters and forgot that too much of ANYTHING will eventually null you to it's impact.
I actually felt that Dead Space was a good example of a game with good horror elements and scares. It was the subsequent sequels that turned that series off for me.
Aliens: Isolation looks not just scary but freaking terrifying! I may not be able to make it through that game. Which is a good thing IMO haha.
Outlast, daylight, evil within and alien isolation prove survival horror is coming back this gen with a vengeance.
Amnesia is pretty spooky the first time you play it. Eeep, this was meant to be a reply to BitbyDeath below.
Indies are bringing back the lost genres. Most of the larger companies are too scared to expand from existing IP's due to the large amounts of money they invest.
this genre is a perfect fit for vr!
Someone hasn't played Outlast at evening time with good pair of headphones in dark room.. The fall? Maybe last generation where most of the genre has been forgotten due to numerous first person shooters.. What I have seen this generation however is a rebirth of survival horror. Take a good look at upcoming line up and it's amazing. I strongly believe, survival horror game will be a true gem this generation and I can't wait :)
