good choice , phil gets it and he can function as a human being with the media

xHeavYx1543d ago

Agreed, this guy knows more about gaming than the previous people who had the position

shivvy241543d ago

Today, was a really good day !

NewMonday1543d ago

was hoping he would get it, maybe now they can go to the good old days of the original Xbox

Boody-Bandit1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Did you guys ever read his bio?
He started as an intern with MS in 1988 and worked his way up several times over. Hopefully he will bring that same dedication and enthusiasm into turning up the heat and making things interesting this generation. Time will tell.

I don't envy the pressure he is going to be under but I'm sure he got a boost in pay to offset that stress. Than again some guys eat pressure for breakfast.

Either way it's good to see someone at the helm that I actually like and that actually likes gaming.

rambi801543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

He kinda annoys me at times but he is a good choice. One of the few persons at xbox who seems to have genuine passion for gaming.

Why o why1543d ago

Hipster wannabe but definitely the best choice. Smart move ms

georgeenoob1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Phil for president! This guy knows exactly what gamers want. Unlike Don Mattrick, thank God he left! With that in mind X1 will drastically outdo 360 no doubt.

GarrusVakarian1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

You know...i used to dislike Phil, i used to think he was just another sleazy MS suit (like Don). But over time ive grown to like him more and more, he's like Xbox's equivalent to Yoshida. He is a genuine gamer too, which is great.

Honestly, this is great news. They couldn't have picked anyone better to lead Xbox.

Anon19741543d ago

This is good news and certainly a step in the right direction for Xbox in my opinion. With the rumors concerning Microsoft ditching the Xbox, and then putting that ax-man Elop in charge of the division, putting Spencer in charge of Xbox looks good. Spencer seems to have a good handle on the gaming industry and they need someone like this heading up the Xbox product line.

truefan11543d ago

This is absolutely fantastic news, I have repeatedly voice my pleasure with his direction for XB1 gaming. This hire means 2 things, 1.XB1 will have a bright future and 2.E3 is gonna be epic, I'm sure he wants his first E3 as president to be huge. All in all good time to be an XB1 gamer.

stiggs1543d ago

@ why o why

"Hipster wannabe"?

May I ask how you drew that conclusion?

-Foxtrot1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

" he's like Xbox's equivalent to Yoshida " no. I wouldn't go that far.

Yeah Phil is the best guy for the job out of everyone at Microsoft but it's not like there was much competition.

The difference with Yoshida and Spencer is Yoshida didn't have to talk to the gaming community but he did while Phils job at the time WAS to talk to people, he was like their PR guy in ways.

ZodTheRipper1543d ago

He's certainly the best Xbox guy but he's far from Yoshida. And am I the only one who hates thìs smug face of his?

Why o why1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Blazer t-shirt combo

Game tshirt at that.

Suit up or casual down......don't cross the beams...obviously a little tongue in cheek my friend

4 stiggs

Prime1571543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Yeah, just wow. I was expecting a slow news day, but this is petty big, imo.

Good luck to you, Phil.

bleedsoe9mm1543d ago

hopeful the get a young game industry guy to take phil's job

stiggs1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

@ why o why

Oh, I thought that perhaps that you knew him personally or were associated with his family or friends. I find that one can typically make a more accurate assessment of an individual by consorting with the person in question and/or his peers.

Instead of, you know, what kind of T-Shirt he wears or the sporadic fashion faux pas;)

pompombrum1543d ago

He still reminds me of a used car salesman but he's grown on me and think this is a really positive move for Microsoft and the Xbox brand. For the first time in a good few years, I'm actually excited to see what Microsoft has up their sleeves with Phil Spencer in charge.

Why o why1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Oh. Never knew I had to know somebody or their friends or family to make an assumption. Humans do that everyday and pretty much everytime they see somebody. . .you should try it. The way you call people, with differing opinions to yours, 'fanboys' or similar things means you may actually be calling yourself a hypocrite. You know nothing about anyone here beyond their comments. I only gave one example because it was the first that sprung to mind. Trying too hard to fit in or look hip . .

Surely somebody his age in his position should dress accordingly when doing presentations or other forms of pr and the combo I mentioned was far from a sporadic decision.

No need to defend everything Microsoft stiggs. . I actually like the dude and believe xbox are better off for appointing him. You paid by the retort or something;) 'tongue in cheek' mate. . His honour is safe

stiggs1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

@ why o why

"Humans do that (make hasty assumptions) everyday and pretty much everytime they see somebody"

...and the world is SO MUCH better for it. /s

I guess it's similar to your assumption that I'm an XBOX supporter because I questioned your cursory assessment of Phil Spencer. I've said it before and I'll say it again...I don't even own an XBOX.

You may want to take less stock in these impetuous assessments. They are typically rife with inaccuracies and motivated by personal bias.

fr0sty1543d ago

I've never liked him, though more on a personal level than based on his performance at Xbox. I just don't like his cocky attitude, the annoying smirk he always has on his face, etc... However, I will agree that he's more in touch with gaming than the previous Xbox bosses, so good luck to him with that venture. I just won't miss him if they decide to have someone else host their press conferences.

Kingthrash3601543d ago

finally they put someone who cares for the brand! things are looking up, i may buy a x1 now. maybe even on black friday.
anyone who knows me knows i was completely turn off by the x1 so this is a huge step in winning my purchase. hopefully he can get the brand on more of a gaming path.

XboxFun1543d ago

Bu bu bu bu bu bu MS is going to sell off Xbox!! Look at Darkride trying to be all gracious after submitting a boatload of MS is selling off Xbox articles. Again goes to show what N4G analyst like that guy truly knows.

and poor foxtrot, still cant believe the artcile as he'll desperately try and spin this as a negative. I bet ill find him in other artciles downplaying this and bringing up how MS is still an evil company.

Why o why1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Tongue in cheek, not cursory. This isn't a thesis or some profiling exhibition dude, its n4g and we're talking about all things gaming. You definitely seem to come to the aid of all things 'microsoft' from where I'm standing. Love the language btw....but speaking smart is different from smart comprehension. Just cherry picking. I gave you 'a' reason why I thought he was a hipster, not a tosser or a pedophile. I'm sure you can understand why 'people' may think that, even if you dont agree. Maybe you can ask the people who agreed. Maybe they could word it in a way you'd understand.

People often get judged by how they dress/speak whatever, no amount of smart speak or social rhetoric will change that. Dude tries to be hip in my opinion.. he often dresses like someone younger than his age and from where I'm from thats a hipster... is that ok for the guy with no bias.

Owning or not owning an xbox has nothing to do with people thinking you rep ms but isn't it strange that you've had to mention that same fact as many times as you have. Dumb ol us. I guess some just pick and choose when they take issue with other peoples words....without bias

stiggs1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

@ Why o Why"

"Humans do that (make assumptions) everyday and pretty much everytime they see somebody. . .you should try it."

I'll pass as what you are suggesting is dangerously close to the definition of prejudice.

You seem adamant in your effort to paint me as a MS fanboy. I'm not sure how that is relevant to this discussion. I simply asked how you deduced that a specific individual is a "hipster" and you replied that his T-shirts were the decisive factor in your assessment. I personally feel that these kind of assumptions are often baseless and needlessly provocative.

"but speaking smart is different from smart comprehension. Maybe they could word it in a way you'd understand". I see that you've resorted to using subtle insults to bolster your argument. This conversation no longer has merit.

Why o why1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Yeah dude.....lmao

*Looks at history*

Ok dude bro....whatever you say...

Please, don't do the same thing you did last time we disagreed.. cheers

deadfrag1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Im glad Microsoft heard my call a month ago!Best move they made in a long time!Congrats to Phil once more!

BattleAxe1543d ago

Definitely a great choice to lead the Xbox Division. I'm very interested to see how he approaches Steam and PC gaming in general.

Ritsujun1542d ago

Don't give up, MS!!!!!!!!!!

abzdine1542d ago

i am not sure about this guy's gaming skills but that's not the relevant part.
if xbox fans are happy with him then it's cool.
i don't like him much he has no charisma when he talks.

Septic1543d ago

Yes! This is brilliant news. He is the only one at MS who's voice resonated with that of gamers. Minus J Allard, he is the best person to head the Xbox division.

Good stuff. Now bring on E3

1543d ago
1543d ago
Conzul1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

This ... could be good. I don't think it'll bear much fruit this year, but by next year's E3 I expect he might turn Xbox around and make it more desireable.

Edit: The first thing he needs to do is drop ALL the red tape that has indies hating on the Bone. Xbox WILL NOT recover unless it gets more developer-friendly.

rainslacker1543d ago

I think it's great news too. I wish him the best of luck. Despite resonating with gamers, as you say, there is still a lot of work to do. So far he has been a great representative of the Xbox brand since others have left.

Fantangoooo1543d ago

agreed, He has been the only one that seemed to admit microsoft took a wrong turn with the whole Don mattrick drm issue. Well hope he will focus on games i want to still rack up my gold membership streak and enjoy the exclusives, side by side with my future ps4.

creatchee1543d ago

Awesome decision. Microsoft has come a long way since this time last year. Hopefully, Phil will take the division to the best place possible.

Or, Covert Operative Spencer will destroy it all. Either way, should be entertaining!

Hicken1543d ago

Definitely the best move they've made in at least a year.

This is the type of move I've been wanting to see out of Microsoft. Excellent choice!

AngelicIceDiamond1543d ago

@Creatchee My favorite quote "Games and gamers have always been at the core of Xbox and the core of my work—and gaming will be our core as we take Xbox forward."

That's what I want to hear.

BlackOni1543d ago

Agreed. He seems to care about gaming

Kavorklestein1542d ago (Edited 1542d ago )

Thank Jeebus for this. I think he is the only person who even openly admitted any kind of flaws in the xbox one. He is the only one focused on telling the truth, and the only one who actually is willing to bring in the arguments of both sides of an issue and address them with optimism and and also remain realistic. A well rounded gamer and the best decision with staffing MS have made in years!!
Can't wait til PAX and E3!!!

1543d ago
incendy351543d ago

Yep, I like him. Good, safe choice.

Christopher1543d ago

Saw this coming a million miles away.

They've been publicly grooming him for the last six months to be a face that the public likes.

I wish him the best and hope that he not only personally continues to be a good representation of the Xbox brand for us but also spreads his attitude to the other areas of the Xbox universe.

Sarcasm1543d ago

He's better than Don Mattrick at least

GarrusVakarian1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

MS could hire a newborn baby to lead MS and he/she would do a better job than Don Mattrick, lol.

otherZinc1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Fantastic; congratulations!

First order of business: bring a "Stock Car" to Forza Motorsport 5 as DLC.

I play every chance I get! I'm also looking forward to the early April Forza Motorsport 5 update by Turn 10!

AngelicIceDiamond1543d ago

@Bleed Agreed.

We as Xbox fans wanted him in office since last year and and looks like we're finally getting our wish.

Especially considering Don Mattrick was smothering him and the games for the past couple of years.

Like I said it sounds like they listened to our feeback further to make him head boss.

And that is the greatest feeling ever.

3-4-51543d ago

* He seems like the only person who is somewhat IN TOUCH with Video Gaming reality.

They needed to do something.

OBVIOUSLY the big shots there screwed things up, and so now they are kind of forced to appoint him as head because he seems to be the only person anybody trusts from Microsoft.

* They need to get back to games like Crimson Skies, Death Row, Blood Wake, Fuzion Frenzy ( 1 not 2), random games like that.

Automatic791543d ago

I concur bring back the exclusive love for games like the Original Xbox, keep the online experiences as smooth if not better then Xbox 360, combine both and give us a beautiful 10 years with Xbox One.

Note: E3 can't come soon enough.

Automatic791543d ago

Keep up the good work Phil. Can't wait to see what you will offer at E3.

SuicideKing1543d ago

Could not agree more I am excited to hear this news as an Xbox one owner!

rainslacker1543d ago

Up until recently I've never really considered Phil in any regard. he was just there when they needed to announce some things.

However, since some of the other bigwigs leaving over at MS, Phil has impressed me with how he's stepped up to the plate to try and turn MS image after the reveal around.

While he still is obviously trying to tow the company line, which is expected, he still comes across as someone who cares about the consumer, and wants the Xbox to go in a positive direction for both MS and their customers.

I think he's a good choice, and I wish him the best of luck.

ritsuka6661543d ago

Phil is great and seems to understand perfectly what Xbox and its core base needs.

avengers19781543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

To bad they didn't give him the job years ago, before all the bad that went down leading up to the XB1, cause the guys in charge at the time flubbed that up pretty good.
He has some challenges ahead, but he seems like a good choice, I mean he has been trying to bring more games to the XB1.

TheTowelBoy1543d ago

Finally, a guy who can get it. Looking forward to what he's got planned or potentially

showtimefolks1542d ago (Edited 1542d ago )

good choice best of luck Phil please listen to what we want and don't force stuff on consumers

i may now get a xbox one this year because this man knows gaming and here is hoping he stays true to his words and make xbox one a gaming console first and foremost

TheSaint1542d ago

How long until MS force him to say something stupid?

I give it a month.

Veneno1542d ago

Precisely. Even though he is "head of Xbox" he still has bosses at Microsoft that have absolutely no clue what gamers want.

Fantastic news, Operation Secret Agent Phil Spencer has been an absolute success. The right man for the right job, no corporate crap.

Mark my words, this man is the savior of the xbox.

Septic1543d ago

"Mark my words, this man is the savior of the xbox."

Indeed. This guy gets it. Things are looking up for the Xbox

ExPresident1543d ago

As good as I think this is for the XBox division I wouldn't go as far as saying 'no corporate crap'. This is Microsoft we're talking about.

FriedGoat1543d ago

Totally agree, Spencer is better, but I still don't trust him. Remember all the resolution gate stuff where he said he didn't know what resolutions games would run at? YEAH SURE.

PixelNinja1543d ago

This is pretty close to what my actual reaction was in real life, lol.

Kayant1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Good decision one of the few people I like a lot at Xbox.

OlgerO1543d ago

I agree this is really good news for all xbox owners.

No_Limit1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Great choice. Phil is a gamer at heart and is always communicating and reaching out to his fans so this is a great choice, can't think of anyone I rather have as the boss of the Xbox division. Congrat Phil!

his end quote from the article: "You will hear much more as we head into E3, but we are at the beginning of an incredible new chapter for Xbox and I can’t wait for the days and years ahead. This is going to be fun."

FriedGoat1543d ago

Yeah, classic.

"new chapter for Xbox"

This is the ultimate PR bullshot, "this will make all that DRM stuff blowover" announcement.

Microsoft wont change, because they've invented a new position for Phil Spencer doesn't mean squat. He still answers to someone else who answers to M$ shareholders.

vallencer1543d ago

They didn't really invent a new position. He as the head of Xbox. Yes he will have to answer to other people because he doesn't own Microsoft BUT he does get to do a lot of decision making for the Xbox brand now. It is a new chapter because they actually have someone who knows games and enjoys them running a position where you need that.

FriedGoat1543d ago

"Next, I have asked Phil Spencer to take on a new role leading Xbox, combining the Xbox and Xbox Live development teams with the Microsoft Studios team. Phil will report to Terry Myerson, allowing us to keep gaming close to the group developing operating systems across devices."

sounds like a new position to me.
